Japan on high alert amid signs North Korea is preparing new missile launch

June 21, 2016

"Japan's military is on alert for a possible North Korean ballistic missile launch, a government source said, with local media reporting its navy and anti-missile Patriot batteries have been told to shoot down any projectile heading for Japan.

Tension in the region has been high since North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and followed that with a satellite launch and test launches of various missiles, including one in May.
snip  video

The government source said on Tuesday that there were signs North Korea might be preparing a launch of the intermediate-range Musudan missile, the same missile it attempted to launch in May, prompting the order for the military to go on alert.

The May launch, which took place a day after Japan put its military on alert, failed. North Korea tried unsuccessfully to test launch the Musudan three other times in April, according to U.S. and South Korean officials.

French Cops Claim They’re Too Tired to Keep Policing Massive Protests

June 23, 2016

france-protests-2.jpg

"Months of mass demonstrations and violence linked to the Euro 2016 football tournament have left French police begging for mercy. A heated combination of protests against controversial changes to France’s employment laws and outbreaks of violence by Russian and British football fans has taken its toll, leading a union leader to beg for a reprieve for French law enforcement.

Protests opposing Francois Hollande’s proposals to relax France’s labour code began in March and have been called the largest and longest-lasting since the French Revolution.

While the government argues the changes are crucial to lower unemployment, protesters claim they are bad for workers’ rights.

Countrywide protests have included strikes and blockades of oil refineries and hundreds of fuel depots. Workers also downed tools at the state-owned rail company.

On June 14, some masked protesters hurled paving slabs, smashed shop windows, and burned cars on the city streets. Despite relatively little mainstream media coverage of the mass protests, a series of violent images emerged showing police responding brutally with tear gas, batons, and water cannons.

Around 60 people were arrested, and 29 police officers and 11 protesters were injured. Shortly after, workers’ unions and student organisations called for more street protests and strikes, on June 23 and June 28, to reject the new labour laws currently being debated in the Senate.

Earlier this week, France’s main police union, Alliance, pleaded with workers to postpone Thursday’s planned day of demonstrations to give the police time to recover."

BREAKING: ISIS Releases Video Naming These U.S. Cities As Their Next Targets

Phillip Hodges

June 27, 2016

In a video released by ISIS members over the weekend, the Orlando mass murderer Omar Mateen was praised, and new attacks were threatened against San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Larossa Abballa’s live footage from inside his victims’ home is also shown. Abballa’s June 13 attack just outside Paris involved killing a police station secretary and her husband in front of their 3-year-old son. Abballa was eventually shot and killed by police.

Also shown in the ISIS video is footage of parts of San Francisco, including the Golden Gate Bridge and the California Street tower – the second tallest building in the city – as well as Las Vegas. PJ Media summarized the ISIS propaganda video:

One Bosnian jihadist and two Frenchmen — one bouncing a baby in his lap — praise Mateen and Abballa and call for similar attacks in the U.S. and Europe.

Only footage of aspirational attack locations in the United States is shown."

Al Qaeda urges lone wolves to target whites, to avoid 'hate crime' label
June 27, 2016

"Lone wolf jihadists should target white Americans so no one mistakes their terror attacks for hate crimes unrelated to the cause of radical Islam, Al Qaeda writes in the latest edition of its online magazine.

In an article first reported by The Foreign Desk, Al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) called for more self-directed Muslim terrorists to kill in America. But the article, titled “Inspire guide: Orlando operation,” tells terrorists to “avoid targeting places and crowds where minorities are generally found” because if gays or Latinos appear to be the targets, “the federal government will be the one taking full responsibility.”

In the June 12 attack in Orlando, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 53 inside a gay nightclub. Although Mateen, who was later killed by police, told hostage negotiators he pledged allegiance to ISIS, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has characterized the attack as a hate crime against gays.

“I cannot tell you definitively that we will ever narrow it down to one motivation,” Lynch told reporters last week. “People often act out of more than one motivation."

ISIS reveals map of 'covert units' across the globe just hours after Istanbul terror attack

June 29, 2016

Russel Myers

"The extremist group has released a graphic showing its strongholds around the world

Islamic State terrorists have revealed terrifying details of “covert units” across the globe, including France and Turkey.

Just hours after the horrific carnage delivered by the Istanbul terror attack , the twisted group released a graphic showing its strongholds around the world.

Western intelligence officials suspect the Istanbul airport attack was the group’s macabre way of “celebrating” the two year anniversary since it announced plans to create an Islamic caliphate.

The image dissects the gang’s influence into three sections, areas of major control, areas of medium control and areas with a presence of covert units.

Terror_Risks_map.jpg
The terrifying map of ISIS covert units

The areas of major control unsurprisingly contain Syria and Iraq, where the group is fighting on several frontiers in its battle to ascertain dominance in the Middle East.

It is calling on Muslims around the world to state their allegiance to the group, which was born from the anti-U. S. insurgency in Iraq and whose brutal tactics have prompted even al-Qaeda leaders to distance themselves.
snip
According to ISIS, the group asserts medium control in 10 countries including Afghanistan and Yemen in the Middle East, Somalia and Nigeria in Africa, Egypt and Libya in north Africa, Chechnya and Dagestan in Eastern Europe and the Philippines in the far east.

Finally the gang claims to have a presence of “covert units” in seven countries, many of which have fallen victim to horrendous terror attacks in recent years.

July 2, 2016

"Two blasts have ripped through busy market areas in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing at least 23 people and injuring 61 others. The explosions targeted the Karrada and Sha'ab districts.

The explosion in Karrada killed at least 23 people and injured 45 others.

Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan confirmed that the first attack was a car bomb.
snip
Eyewitnesses said on Twitter that many shops burned down in the explosion. There are also fears the number of casualties could grow.

Karrada, the upper middle class district of the Iraqi capital, is mostly inhabited by Shia but also has quite a large Christian minority. The area gets really busy after sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.
snip
Shortly after the explosion hit Karrada, eyewitnesses said there was a second blast that targeted the Shaab neighborhood, located in the northern part of the city.

AP said that at least five people were killed in this explosion and another 16 were injured. Meanwhile, Sky News Arabia said a suspected homemade explosive device was used to hit a market."

so, this is going to get the Iraquis ready to lynch up some former world leaders

The long-awaited Chilcot report on the Iraq War roiled already tumultuous British politics Wednesday, and added to the international post-war consensus that the decision to invade in 2003 was rashly made and very likely unnecessary.

Formally called the Iraq Inquiry, the years-long investigation was led by civil servant Sir John Chilcot.

"The U.K. military role in Iraq ended a very long way from success… The evidence is there for all to see. It is an account of an intervention which went badly wrong, with consequences to this day. The Inquiry Report is the Committee's unanimous view," reads Chilcot's public statement in the report.

"In March 2003 there was no imminent threat from Saddam Hussein," Chilcot said Wednesday.

Turkey attempted coup: EU says measures 'unacceptable

July 21, 2016

"The European Union says Turkey's measures against the education system, the judiciary and the media following the failed coup are "unacceptable".

In a statement, High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner Johannes Hahn said they were "concerned" by Turkey's decision to declare a state of emergency.

The move gives Turkey's leaders "far reaching powers to govern by decree".

Thousands of people have been sacked or arrested following the failed coup.

The two top EU officials urged President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to respect the rule of law, rights and freedoms.

And they also warned Turkey over its decision to suspend the European Convention of Human Rights, saying it must stick to the conditions by which a suspension is permitted."

ISIS Trying to Topple Saudi King with Attack on Mohammed's Mosque
July 21, 2016
Robert Windrem

"Current and former U.S. officials say a recent ISIS attack on the tomb of Mohammed in Saudi Arabia -- Islam's second holiest site -- shows the terror group is now directly challenging the kingdom's ruling family and trying to topple the monarchy.

"The Saudi king's tiles include 'Protector of the two Holy Cities," said one senior U.S. counterterrorism official. "The message of the attack is that that protection doesn't exist."

The kingdom's two holy cities, Mecca and Medina, are home Islam's two holiest sites, the Qabba in Mecca, which millions of pilgrims visit every year, and the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina, which holds Mohammed's tomb.

Said the counterterrorism official, "If [the royal family] can't protect those places -- and people traveling to those cities from across Islam - it calls in to question the fitness of their ruling power and its legitimacy.""

The Hostage Air Base – and Its Hydrogen Bombs

July 20, 2016

By Stephen D. Bryen and Shoshana Bryen

"The United States runs its air operations against ISIS in Iraq from Incirlik Air Base in Turkey. The base, used by other NATO forces as well, is not American. It is Turkish, and the U.S. needs government permission to fly from there. Since the 15 July coup attempt in Ankara, U.S. forces at Incirlik are essentially hostages to the Turkish government. The Turkish base commander and his aides have been arrested; U.S. personnel are confined to base; outside power has been cut off; and while the U.S. has been permitted to resume operations over Iraq and Syria, it is working under adverse conditions, to say the least.  Most worrisome, about 50 hydrogen bombs are stored by the U.S. at Incirlik, ostensibly on behalf of NATO. These bombs are "protected" by Turkish troops and to some degree their potential use is shared with the Turkish Air Force.

The deployment goes back more than 50 years, begun as an effort to counter the Soviet military buildup as an offset to quantitatively larger Soviet ground forces facing Europe. But by the mid-1980s the U.S. put more emphasis on "tactical" missiles, largely to counter the Soviet Union's deployment of SS-20's, a short to medium range missile with multiple, independently targeted warheads (MIRV) in the second and third versions of the SS-20. In 1987 the Intermediate and Short-range Missile Nuclear Treaty (INF) was signed and the Russians and the U.S. began removing their missiles. By 1991, all the missiles of concern on both sides were eliminated.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the expansion of NATO, one can ask why tactical nuclear weapons in NATO were retained as times and conditions have changed. The U.S. now finds itself escalating operations out of Incirlik as it increases the fight against ISIS, al Nusra, and al Qaeda. Turkey itself is increasingly authoritarian and increasingly involved in the wars in Syria and Iraq as well as fighting Kurdish separatists. But only late in 2015 did Incirlik see the beginning of security upgrades for its nuclear stockpile.

Why didn't we just take them out?

Incirlik nuclear weapons are unlikely to be used against Russia. The missiles need to be delivered by aircraft that can penetrate Russian air defenses -- which have been steadily improved. Newer Russian systems such as the S-300, S-400, and the soon to come S-500 raise a host of new challenges. As U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Mark Welch and LTG Herbert "Hawk" Carlisle, Chief of the Air Combat Command, have testified, there are ten or more -- and there will be more -- "integrated air defense systems in the world that you would have a difficult time operating in or around in aircraft." They didn't specifically mention Russia, but it can be assumed they meant U.S. Air Force conventional bombers would have a hard time with Russia's air defenses and newest radars. In a real conflict, it can be assumed that more likely than a U.S. strike on Russian nuclear weapons depots is a Russian strike on nuclear storage depots like Incirlik.

snip

Finally, there is always the possibility of terrorists getting nuclear bombs. Under current political conditions, with the Turkish general staff and military decimated, the time is ripe for an external attack on Incirlik. The acquisition of a potentially usable nuclear weapon by terrorists is the worst nightmare of all.

It would be optimal to ship the weapons out of Turkey, but if that is not possible, there is a lesson from history. After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the U.S. physically disabled the nuclear weapons under its control. In any case, a rescue team should be positioned in the area, ready to intervene if necessary. For the U.S. to continue operating in a business-as-usual mode, but under hostage-like conditions, is extraordinarily risky."

Russia bombards secret Anglo-American base in Syria '

July 22, 2016

NOTE:  This is translated

"The Russian air force has carried out attacks on a secret base in Syria that was used by special units of the British and American military.

The attack happened on June 16, reports the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal Friday according to US officials. British officials did not respond to the notice.

A British unit of twenty elite soldiers would be less than 24 hours before the bombing have made use of the base in the south of Syria. were reportedly four rebels for the attack.

Immediately after the bombing American aircraft were called. The pilots would have seen that the Russians carried out a second attack. The Americans have tried to make contact with the Russian pilots, but not responding.

IS
The US Department of Defense has direct explanation requested by Russia. Russian officials said the pilots thought that this was a (IS) based Islamic State.

Employees of the US military and intelligence doubt that explanation, because above all should be clear enough that it was not an IS-base.

The Russian Ministry of Defense says that it had permission from Jordan in order to carry out the attack. The Russians say that they had no coordinates of the base and thus did not know that it was used by the US.

The Russian Air Force last week bombed a base near the Iraqi border that was used for families of rebels and other displaced persons supported by the West.

The attack came five people dead. The Americans suspect that Russia carried out the attack to put the US under pressure to improve military co-operation in Syria."

IN DETENTION Turkey arrests 62 schoolchildren for TREASON following failed military coup

Guy Birchall

July 23, 2016

"The pupils, aged between 14 and 17, were made to dress up in camouflage and were handed guns with empty magazines, according to their lawyers."

"TURKEY has arrested more than 60 school kids and accused them of TREASON.

A total of 62 students at Kuleli Military school, the oldest such establishment in Istanbul, were collared by Turkish authorities.

Before the coup attempt last week, the pupils, aged between 14 and 17, were made to dress up in camouflage and were handed guns with empty magazines, according to their lawyers.

The children have been taken to prison and not allowed to speak to their parents as they were accused of treason against the Turkish State.

The mum of a 15-year-old boy caught up in the arrest, Emre, while waiting for news outside Istanbul’s Maltepe Prison said: “Our child has never held a gun before.

“They were used, they were forced to do this.”

'Law is suspended': Turkish lawyers report abuse of coup detainees
July 24, 2016
Loveday Morris

"Thousands of people taken into custody since Turkey's attempted coup are being held in sports facilities and stables, where some have been beaten and mistreated, according to lawyers familiar with the cases.

Lawyers from the Ankara Bar Association's human rights commission say members have reported the alleged abuses after trying to meet with clients. Other lawyers and human rights organizations have made similar allegations.

In addition to verbal and physical abuse, clients complained about a lack of food and that their hands have been bound for days, said Sercan Aran, deputy head of the commission. The mistreatment is "systematic," he said, while lawyers have been prevented from documenting physical signs of beatings and abuse.

The Turkish government strongly denies the allegations, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stressed in interviews that due process is being followed."

Coup attempt in Turkey raises a nuclear concern at US air base
July 24, 2016

"Incirlik Air Base was an operational centre of the attempted coup. It is also America’s largest foreign stockpile of nuclear weapons.

A little more than 100 miles from the territory held by Islamic State, there is a little piece of Americana. It has an eight-lane swimming pool, a baseball diamond and housing tracts built on carefully manicured cul-de-sacs.
The Incirlik Air Force Base in Turkey has some other American assets: several dozen B61 thermonuclear warheads.
Turkey’s coup crackdown strains ties with the US and Europe

The base has been a linchpin in Nato’s southern flank for more than half a century, the staging ground for US anti-terrorism missions and the fight against Islamic State.
But the failed military coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has increased long-standing concerns about the military usefulness and security of the Incirlik armoury, America’s largest foreign stockpile of nuclear weapons."
snip

Can anyone recall how many times we've read about the US being concerned about nukes falling into the hands of ISIS?  Even once is one too many, yet here are about 50 of them in Incirlik.  The coup, not being a coup, or whatever it really is, has added additional risk, and Erdogan has 1500 American people on that base.  Seems a tad too convenient for me.

Former NATO commander ‘behind failed coup against Erdogan’ – Turkish daily

July 25, 2016

"The former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, retired US Army General John F. Campbell, was the mastermind behind the failed military coup in Turkey, the Yeni Safak daily has reported, citing sources close to investigation.

General John F. Campbell, 59, was "one of the top figures who organized and managed the soldiers behind the failed coup attempt in Turkey," the conservative paper's English-language edition said on Monday.

The paper is known for its loyal support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was the target of the coup attempt.

According to Yeni Safak, Campbell "also managed more than $2 billion in transactions via UBA Bank in Nigeria by using CIA links to distribute among the pro-coup military personnel in Turkey."

Coup Plotters in Turkey Intended to Implement NATO’s Policies: Ex-General
July 23, 2016

"TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The former secretary-general of Turkey’s National Security Council said those behind last week’s failed military coup had pledged allegiance to NATO and would have pursued the alliance’s policies had the coup attempt succeeded.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Tuncer Kılınç, who is also a retired Turkish general, pointed to the consequences of the recent attempted coup in Turkey and said the coup plotters had openly declared their close ties with NATO.

“We can conclude from the declaration that they would pursue no policies other than those of NATO,” he said.

He further stressed the need for national unity in Turkey and regretted that the coup attempt targeted the country’s “unified fight against terrorism”.

The coup attempt started on Friday evening, July 15, when tanks took up positions on two bridges over the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, blocking traffic."

BREAKING: Source of Turkey Coup Exposed

July 24, 2016

"President Barack Obama has been unwavering in his support for Turkey’s Islamist strongman, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Even during the Turkish coup, supposedly precipitated by elements of the Turkish armed forces, White House spokesman Josh Earnest emphasized “the strong commitment of the United States to the democratically elected civilian government of Turkey.”

“The president pledged any needed assistance to the Turkish government as they conduct an investigation to determine exactly what happened,” Earnest added, according to SBS.

After all that, though, it looks like President Obama may have picked the wrong side for the American people … again.

Ilhan Tanir, a Middle Eastern political analyst, tweeted a revelation from an article in the German magazine Focus which has not yet been posted online. A translated excerpt from the article intimated that Erdoğan may have engineered the coup as an excuse to conduct purges.

post-5-0-17915000-1469561009_thumb.jpg

snip

The U.K. Independent reported that detainees after the coup were raped, beaten and tortured, with Erdoğan lengthening the amount of time that someone could be detained without charge from four days to 30. CNN reported that he used the crackdown to arrest 42 journalists and shut down a satirical magazine oft compared to France’s Charlie Hebdo.

At least 50,000 citizens of Turkey have been suspended or dismissed from their positions in the wake of the coup attempt.

I know that the Obama administration believes in never letting a crisis go to waste, which is maybe why the president feels such a kinship with Turkey’s strongman. However, if these reports from British intelligence are true, it was clear that this “coup” was a ruse from the beginning (or, at the risk of sounding like Alex Jones, a false-flag operation)."

Ex-Navy Admiral: Incirlik Base Issues Justify US Spending on Aircraft Carriers

July 27, 2016

"Losing the ability to launch anti-Daesh operations from Turkey’s Incirlik air base shows that the investment in next-generation aircraft carriers is worth the price, former US Navy Vice Admiral Pete Daly told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On July 15, power to the Incirlik airbase was cut off and US operations came to a halt after a military coup that failed to unseat Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"The alternative to [aircraft carriers] is to have fixed sites ashore, which are hugely expensive and vulnerable, and the ability to use those fixed sites ashore is called into question from time to time," Daly said on Wednesday. "We had the recent example of Turkey, and the first thing we lose is the air force base at Incirlik."

Daly cited delays in receiving permission from countries in Southwest Asia to launch US aircraft quickly as another reason to invest in the Ford Class advanced aircraft carriers.

"The best example of why you need [a carrier] was when it became apparent that we needed to urgently conduct anti-ISIS [Daesh] attacks in August of 2014 when they were on the suburbs of Baghdad," Daly recalled"

US Wants Week-Long Silence Regime in Syria to Filter Out Moderate Opposition
July 27, 2016

"Washington has offered Moscow to impose a week-long regime of silence in Syria

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Washington has offered Moscow to impose a week-long regime of silence in Syria in order to filter out the so-called "moderate" opposition, the Russian Izvestia newspaper reports.

"During talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry held in Moscow on July 14-15 and at the bilateral ministerial meeting held on the sidelines of the ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] summit on July 26, the American delegation offered to introduce a ‘regime of silence’ for seven days in order to separate the moderate opposition from terrorist groups," the newspaper said on Thursday citing a source familiar with the US-Russia talks.

According to the source, the United States wants Russia and coalition forces to stop airstrikes against terrorists in Syria for one week.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting a number of opposition factions and extremist groups. On February 27, a US-Russia brokered ceasefire came into force in Syria. Terrorist groups such as Islamic State (IS, also known as Daesh), as well as Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front), both outlawed in Russia and a range of other states, are not part of the deal.

Russia has continuously asked its partners in the fight against terrorism in Syria to notify it of locations of moderate opposition forces allied to them, so that they would not be targeted by accident."

Turkey cancels 50,000 passports as President Erdogan tightens noose around suspected dissidents after failed coup

July 29, 2016

"Turkey has cancelled the passports of almost 50,000 people following coup attempt.

It is the latest stage in President Erdogan's clampdown on alleged dissidents in the country, and signals his regime's increasingly authoritarian policies.

It comes after the Turkish Government shut down 130 media outlets in a mass purge of the media following the coup attempt.

President Recep Erdogan has responded to the apparent coup attempt by clamping down on alleged dissidents since the failed bid to oust him from power rocked the country.

The increasingly authoritarian regime has purged the media, universities, schools, the police, judiciary and military of potential opponents."

Erdogan tells West 'mind your own business' over crackdown criticism
July 29, 2016

"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told the European Union and United States to "mind your own business" after the West expressed alarm over the growing crackdown against suspected accomplices in the failed coup.

"Some people give us advice. They say they are worried. Mind your own business! Look at your own deeds," Erdogan said at the presidential palace, complaining no senior Western official had visited Turkey in the wake of the coup.

"Not a single person has come to give condolences either from the European Union... or from the West," said Erdogan.

"And then they say that 'Erdogan has got so angry'!" he fumed.

"Those countries or leaders who are not worried about Turkey's democracy, the lives of our people, its future - while being so worried about the fate of the putschists - cannot be our friends."

Turkish authorities detained 17 journalists on Friday night under the post-coup crackdown.

Twenty-one journalists had appeared before a judge in hearings lasting until midnight on Friday. Four were then freed but 17 were placed under pre-trial arrest, charged with "membership of a terror group", the state-run Anadolu news agency said."

Uh-OH.. Gitcher Muck Boots Out And Ready... It Grows Deeper By The Minute...OBOZO's Cash Payment To Iran Is A Federal FELONY

Posted By: Watchman

Date: Sunday, 7-Aug-2016 15:05:19

Maybe Obozo and Hitlery Can share a cell?

Did it ever occur to President Obama to ask why he couldn’t just cut a check to the Iranian regime? Outrage broke out this week over the revelation that Obama arranged to ship the mullahs piles of cash, worth $400 million and converted into foreign denominations, reportedly in an unmarked cargo plane. The hotly debated question was whether the payment, which the administration attributes to a 37-year-old arms deal, was actually a ransom paid for the release of American hostages Tehran had abducted. It is a waste of time to debate that point further. The Iranians have bragged that the astonishing cash payment was a ransom — and Obama has been telling us for months that we can trust the Iranians.

The hostages were released the same day the cash arrived. One of the hostages has reported that the captives were detained an extra several hours at the airport and told they would not be allowed to leave until the arrival of another plane — inferentially, the unmarked cargo plane ferrying the cash. The reason American policy has always prohibited paying ransoms to terrorists and other abductors is that it only encourages them to take more hostages. And, as night follows day, Iran has abducted more Americans since Obama paid the cash. No matter how energetically the president tries to lawyer the ransom issue, if it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck . . . More worth examining is why the transaction took the bizarre form that it did. To cut to the chase, I believe it was to camouflage — unsuccessfully — the commission of felony law violations. The

Wall Street Journal has reported that the Justice Department strongly objected to the cash payment to Iran. As we shall see, that should come as no surprise. What is surprising is the Journal’s explanation of Justice’s concerns: Department officials, it is said, fretted that the transaction looked like a ransom payment. I don’t buy that. It is not a federal crime to pay a ransom; just to receive one. Our government’s stated disapproval of paying ransoms is a prudent policy, not a legal requirement. The Justice Department’s principal job is to enforce the laws, not to ensure good policy in foreign relations. It seems far more likely that Justice was worried that the transaction was illegal. If they were, they had good reasons.

EDITORIAL: Iran’s $400 Million Payoff At a press conference Thursday, Obama remarkably explained, “The reason that we had to give them cash is precisely because we are so strict in maintaining sanctions and we do not have a banking relationship with Iran.” Really Mr. President? The whole point of sanctions is to prohibit and punish certain behavior. If you — especially you, Mr. President — do the precise thing that the sanctions prohibit, that is a strange way of being “so strict in maintaining” them. Now, the sanctions at issue exclude Iran from the U.S. financial system by, among other things, prohibiting Americans and financial institutions from engaging in currency transactions that involve Iran’s government. Contrary to the nuclear sanctions that Obama’s Iran deal (the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” or JCPOA) attempts to undo, the sanctions pertinent here were imposed primarily as a result of Iran’s support for terrorism. That is significant. In pleading with Congress not to disapprove the JCPOA, Obama promised lawmakers that the terrorism sanctions would remain in force. RELATED: The Ransom that Dare Not Speak Its Name Terrorism-related sanctions against Iran trace back to the early 1980s, shortly after the jihadist regime overthrew the shah, stormed the American embassy, took hostages, and triggered Hezbollah’s killing sprees.

But the sanctions most relevant for present purposes stem from President Clinton’s 1995 invocation of federal laws that deal with national emergencies caused by foreign aggression. Clinton concluded that Iran had caused such an emergency by, among other things, “its support for international terrorism.” Note that this was even before Iran killed 19 members of the U.S. Air Force in the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia. To this day, Iran remains on our government’s list of state sponsors of terrorism. Clinton’s state-of-emergency declaration has been annually renewed ever since.

Let that sink in: Notwithstanding Obama’s often shocking appeasement of Tehran, he has been renewing the state of emergency since 2009 — most recently, just five months ago. Indeed, it is worth noting what the Obama State Department’s latest report on “State Sponsors of Terrorism” has to say about Iran. This is from the first paragraph: Designated as a State Sponsor of Terrorism in 1984, Iran continued its terrorist-related activity in 2015, including support for [Hezbollah], Palestinian terrorist groups in Gaza, and various groups in Iraq and throughout the Middle East. In 2015, Iran increased its assistance to Iraqi Shia terrorist groups[.] . . . Iran used the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) to implement foreign policy goals, provide cover for intelligence operations, and create instability in the Middle East. The IRGC-QF is Iran’s primary mechanism for cultivating and supporting terrorists abroad. It is due to this atrocious record that Congress pressed Obama to maintain and enforce anti-terrorism sanctions, which the administration repeatedly committed to do. This commitment was reaffirmed by Obama’s Treasury Department on January 16, 2016, the “Implementation Day” of the JCPOA.

Treasury’s published guidance regarding Iran states that, in general, “the clearing of U.S. dollar- or other currency-denominated transactions through the U.S. financial system or involving a U.S. person remain prohibited[.]” (See here, p.17, sec. C.14.) I’ve added italics to highlight that it is not just U.S. dollar transactions that are prohibited; foreign currency is also barred. Obama’s cash payment, of course, involved both — a fact we’ll be revisiting shortly.

Deadly air strikes destroy MSF-supported children’s hospital in Syria

August 9, 2016

"A HOSPITAL supported by Doctors Without Borders in a rebel-held area of Syria has been destroyed in a series of air strikes over the weekend, killing about 13 people.

The group, known by its French acronym MSF, said two of four air strikes directly hit the hospital in Millis, in the northern province of Idlib and put it out of service.

Of those killed, at least four were staff members and five were children. Six other hospital staff members were wounded.
It is not clear who conducted the airstrikes.

ISIS, Taliban call truce to fight US-backed forces in Afghanistan - military officials
August 8, 2016

"Having been engaged in fierce battles against each other for over a year in Afghanistan, Islamic State and Taliban militants have agreed a truce to counter US-backed forces in the region, military officials told American media.

Afghan government forces have been using the rivalry between Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and the Taliban to push the latter’s forces back from the territories under their control. But several months ago the conflict died out as the two terrorist groups seemed to have reached a shaky truce, Afghan officials say.

“They [iS] fought deadly battles with the Taliban before. But over the past two months, there has been no fighting among them,” the Wall Street Journal cites Mohammad Zaman Waziri, who commands Afghan troops in the east of the country, as saying.

The truce enabled Islamic State to regroup and concentrate on engaging Afghan forces in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, which used to be an Al-Qaeda stronghold, media report. "

ISIS/Taliban Co-op Seize High Tech U.S. Military Weapons Cache

August 7, 2016

Christopher Kemmett

"Among the weapons are a rocket launcher, machine gun and a number of grenades. There are also plenty of 5.56mm and 7.62mm rifle rounds intended for sniper rifles and M240 machine guns. The list further includes flak jackets, eye goggles, various body padding, tourniquets and other medical supplies.

Islamic State terrorists say they have gotten their hands on a variety of US weapons and sensitive radio equipment in Afghanistan following recent battlefield victories. They also posted pictures of documents, photographs and US ID cards online.

The weaponry allegedly belonged to American soldiers, but none were captured in the area at the time, according to the Military Times publication.

The original source of the photographs is Islamic State’s (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) Amaq new agency. They were first circulated by the SITE Intelligence Group, which alleged that they had been taken in Nangarhar province.
snip
Nangarhar has become a volatile region of Afghanistan overrun with IS militants – about 1,000-1,500 of them, according to the US. Most are actually believed to be former Taliban who had previously fled Pakistan.

American special operations troops are in the area to help Afghan government troops reclaim territory lost to the terrorists."

uh huh notice how it's a co-op now between ISIS/Taliban

NATO denies ISIS claims it has assassinated US military commander in Kabul bomb attack

August 15, 2016

Richard Wheatstone, Gareth Browne

"A statement put out by the terror group's Amaq news agency said it had killed the commander with an explosive device along with two Afghan officers

NATO has denied ISIS' claims it has assassinated a U.S military commander in Kabul.

A statement put out by the terror group's Amaq news agency said it had killed the commander with an explosive device along with two Afghan officers.

But the NATO-led Resolute Support mission later said no-one was killed in the attack.

A statement said: "There is no truth to any claims that a U.S. military commander was killed in today's Kabul explosion, several ANA members were wounded only."

Faredoon Obiadi, chief of the police's criminal investigations department, says an army officer is one of two people wounded.

Here We Go Again: TIME Just Declared Russia, Syria, and Iran the New “Axis of Evil”

Posted By: RumorMail [send E-Mail]

Date: Thursday, 18-Aug-2016 12:09:44

In Response To: Desperate Democrats' new warning: Leaks could include Russian lies!! (RumorMail)

By Melissa Dykes

While it’s all over the mainstream media that Russia is using Iranian bases to stage attacks against ISIS for the first time — GASP! — even though A) Russia notified the U.S.-led coalition it would be doing so and B) we all know who created ISIS in the first place, establishment propaganda peddler TIME put a spin on it that will send chills down the spines of anyone paying attention to how much we’re currently being groomed towards war with Iran.

Today, TIME declared:

Looks like the U.S. and its allies have a new “axis of evil” in the Middle East: Syria, Iran and Russia. The growing pro-Moscow alliance got a big boost Tuesday after Iran allowed Russia to fly its bombers from one of its bases to attack rebels in Syria.

So Russia, Syria, and Iran are officially the new “axis of evil.”

Last time phrases like that were thrown around, they were coupled with about 1,000 lies to get America into an unjustified war in Iraq that had nothing to do with the terror attacks on US soil that preceded it (or the debunked weapons of mass destruction).

Iran, you may recall, was included in the first “axis of evil,” something which actually confused a lot of press at the time:

In the aftermath of Sept. 11, relations between the United States and Iran seemed — remarkably — to be warming up, as Iran quietly offered support for the U.S. campaign in Afghanistan. In November, Secretary of State Colin Powell shook hands with the Iranian foreign minister, Kamal Kharrazi, at the U.N. headquarters in New York City — a simple yet historic gesture that seemed the most tantalizing hint of rapprochement between the U.S. and Iran since the Islamic revolution and the hostage crisis in 1979…

But on Jan. 29, 2002, in his State of the Union address, President George W. Bush branded Iran and its “terrorist allies” as part of “an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world.” And on Jan. 31, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice summed up the administration’s position on Iran. “Iran’s direct support of regional and global terrorism,” she said, “and its aggressive efforts to acquire weapons of mass destruction, belie any good intentions it displayed in the days after the world’s worst terrorist attacks in history.”

Since this dramatic turnabout, press reports have tried to piece together the trail leading from the Powell-Kharrazi handshake to the “axis of evil” speech…

That was then.

Today, it’s Russia (who is actually fighting and defeating ISIS), Syria (whose regime the Pentagon really wants to see changed already) and again, Iran (a big fat domino on the table blocking U.S. coalition-led remapping of the Middle East for a long, long time now — see Brookings’ “Which Path to Persia” for more on that).

In other words… Get ready. While everyone is busy focusing on the election, the finishing touches are being put on America’s new war.

Here we go again.

THREAT OF WAR

Fears of all-out conflict in Ukraine as sabre-rattling Vladimir Putin places 40,000 troops and armoured vehicles along the border

August 18, 2016

Corey Charlton

"The manoeuvres are part of what the Russian strongman sees as the fortification of a new front line with NATO

AS many as 40,000 Russian troops are massing on the country’s border with Ukraine – prompting fears of a new military invasion.

The Pentagon has identified eight staging areas dotted along the border, suggesting Russian strongman Vladimir Putin is preparing for new incursions.

Among the units deployed to the area are armoured vehicles, tanks and fighter jets.

Navy Captain Danny Hernandez told the Washington Free Beacon that the exercises were being closely monitored.

He said: “We are extremely concerned about the increasing tensions near the administrative boundary between Crimea and the rest of Ukraine.

“We urge both sides to avoid provocative steps or rhetoric that could escalate the situation.”

Officials told the publication similar movements were seen before Vladimir Putin carried out his deceptive annexation of the Crimea.

Such manoeuvres have reduced the “warning time” available to the US if he decides to launch another attack.

In June it was reported Russia was constructing an army base near the border which it considers to be a new front line with NATO.

A Reuters reporter who visited the Russian town of Klintsy, about 30 miles from Ukraine, saw a makeshift army camp, large numbers of newly-arrived servicemen and military vehicles."

There's 2 sides to every story, as we all know.
