Brazil braces for continued protests nationwide

By Paulo Prada

RIO DE JANEIRO | Thu Jun 20, 2013 4:20pm EDT

(Reuters) - Protesters are expected to flood more than 100 Brazilian cities and surround two international soccer matches later on Thursday, as lower transport fares and promises of better public services fail to stem the tide of discontent in Latin America's biggest country.

After more than a week of the largest protests here in over two decades, demonstrators show no signs of letting up. Though the transport fare hikes that sparked the unrest were rescinded in Brazil's two biggest cities on Wednesday, demonstrators by the hundreds of thousands promised to take to the streets in locales as diverse as the Amazon capital of Manaus to the prosperous southern city of Florianopolis.

The persistence of the protests reflects what has become a generalized host of complaints about high taxes, inflation, corruption and poor public services, from hospitals and schools to roads and police forces. Using an ongoing international soccer tournament as a backdrop, they are also denouncing the more than $26 billion of public money that will be spent on the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, two events meant to showcase a modern, developed Brazil.

Big demonstrations are expected in Rio de Janeiro and the northeastern city of Salvador around games of the Confederations Cup, a test run before next year's World Cup.

The unrest comes as Brazil, after nearly a decade-long economic boom in which the country's profile soared on the global stage, enters a period of uncertainty. Economic growth of less than one percent a year, annual inflation of 6.5 percent and a loss of appetite for Brazilian assets among international investors have quickly deflated what had been a feel-good era for Brazil. Brazil's currency, the real, dropped to a four-year low on Thursday, trading as weak as 2.275 per U.S. dollar. The country's benchmark stock market index, the Bovespa, also hit a four-year low.

In India, floods strand thousands in rapidly-developed hills

A report by India's Comptroller and Auditor General three years ago warned that massive expansion of hydropower projects in the area could be catastrophic in the event of a flash flood.

By Shivam Vij, Correspondent / June 20, 2013

At least 160 people have died and thousands are stranded or missing after brief torrential rains caused massive flooding and landslides in the Himalayan foothills of India's Uttarakhand state, northeast of Delhi.

Many expect the number of casualties to rise, as bodies are said to have been washed away by the flash flooding. Among some 60,000 stranded are Hindu pilgrims from across India, visiting the area’s holy shrines. Currently some 45 military helicopters and 10,000 troops are engaged in rescue operations hampered by washed roads, bad weather, and continuing landslides. Still, some 33,192 pilgrims had been rescued as of Thursday, according to a ministry press release.

“The tragedy is huge and damages tremendous with vast tracts of land still submerged under tons of debris. The casualties could run into several hundreds,” the state's chief minister, Vijay Bahuguna, said in a press conference Thursday.

Officers Search for Gunman Who Opened Fire on Detectives at Police Station

A gunman opened fire as the detectives drove into the gated entrance of the LAPD's Wilshire station

June 25, 2013

By Jonathan Lloyd, Toni Guinyard and Jacob Rascon

"Officers are searching a Mid-City neighborhood for a gunman who ambushed two detectives as they arrived Tuesday morning at a Los Angeles Police Department station in what the police chief called an "attempt to assassinate" members of the department.

The search for the gunman forced closures along a half-mile stretch of La Brea Avenue and one mile of Venice Boulevard. Businesses in the search area remain closed and a shelter-in-place order was issued for people already inside the search area.

Several SWAT units, using armored vehicles and at least one canine unit, were searching a neighborhoods in a 25-square block area around the Wilshire Community Police Station (map).

Two residents at a Buckingham Road (map) apartment complex told NBC4 that a man approached them as they were leaving for work. The man was "excited," and asked to use a cell phone.

Venice Boulevard is closed between Redondo Boulevard and West Boulevard. La Brea Avenue is closed between Washington and Pico boulevards. The closures are expected to remain in effect until "noon, at a minimum," said LAPD Commander Andy Smith."

:( putting this here... Though aware of the whole Syria-section, - but seing that this is pretty much a current event, - and pretty serious - - I thought to share this post in here.

It can be removed to Syria  Watch....

Russia:”Syria Will Be Armed With Weapons That Have Never Been Seen Before In the Middle East”

Neither of these leaders, given their past, would give pause to the thought of killing millions of people if they believe it was in their interest, or in the interest of their globalist handlers.

By Mac Slavo

SHTFPlan

June 24, 2013

Last week, Noble Peace Prize winner President Barrack Obama advised that his administration would be arming the Free Syrian Army with weapons to resist the armies of Syria’s President Bashar Assad. Furthermore, they would look to implement a Libya-style no-fly zone over the country, which like Libya, would likely involve widespread carpet bombing of suspected military strongholds and control centers. (..)

If and when Western forces engage the Syrian army you can be assured that it will be nothing like the 1991 conflict in Iraq when a hundred thousand of Saddam Hussein’s soldiers surrendered without firing a shot. Nor will it be a no-fly zone free-for-all where air forces will be able to target military assets as they did in Libya without being challenged.

No, this time will be different.

This time, Russia and America may well being playing with fire. The kind that leads the people of this planet head first into World War III.

"My body has become nothing but a cage, a source of pain and constant problems. The illness I have has caused me pain that not even the strongest medicines could dull, and there is no cure. All day, every day a screaming agony in every nerve ending in my body. It is nothing short of torture. My mind is a wasteland, filled with visions of incredible horror, unceasing depression, and crippling anxiety, even with all of the medications the doctors dare give. Simple things that everyone else takes for granted are nearly impossible for me. I can not laugh or cry. I can barely leave the house. I derive no pleasure from any activity. Everything simply comes down to passing time until I can sleep again. Now, to sleep forever seems to be the most merciful thing."

Someone I know lives near where this happened and as of about 3 pm Pacific, she was still in lockdown at her home. She was not allowed to leave to go to work.

Then about 4pm, she said the cops were back with their guns drawn.

California man faces 13 years in jail for scribbling anti-bank messages in chalk

Source: RT

June 26, 2013

Jeff Olson, the 40-year-old man who is being prosecuted for scrawling anti-megabank messages on sidewalks in water-soluble chalk last year now faces a 13-year jail sentence. A judge has barred his attorney from mentioning freedom of speech during trial.

According to the San Diego Reader, which reported on Tuesday that a judge had opted to prevent Olson’s attorney from ”mentioning the First Amendment, free speech, free expression, public forum, expressive conduct, or political speech during the trial,” Olson must now stand trial for on 13 counts of vandalism.

:) yeah - - this is an interesting peep into the debate during the dudObama's recent visit to the Northern Ireland:

-->link: http://rt.com/news/irish-politicians-tyrade-obamas-238/

"Clare Daly’s comments were condemned as “disgraceful” by Kenny, who debated with the MP following her initial speech. He said her comment were a “do-down” to Irish people living throughout the world. Addressing, Daly’s words on Syria, Kenny said that she seemed to have a very “biased” view on the “wanton slaughter of the Syrian people” by the regime of President Bashar Assad.

Daly later questioned what was so “outrageous” about her comments in a column in the Irish examiner, stressing the “unquestionable adoration of the Obamas is ludicrous.”

“Of course the Obamas, like anyone else, have a right to visit our country and enjoy the benefits we have to offer. However, we cannot afford to let a sideshow develop whereby the situation becomes completely depoliticized,” Daly wrote. "

;) ;) ;) Go Daly GO!!!!

Peace is not a Piece....

Tempora: The Americans And The British Are Recording All Phone Calls And All Internet Activity

What would you do if you knew that the government had tapped all of your phones, was watching everything that you do on the Internet and was keeping a copy of all of your emails?  Well, the truth is that this is essentially exactly what is happening right now.  Over in the UK, a British intelligence agency known as Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has tapped into the cables that all of our phone calls and all of our Internet activity go through.  All of the information that goes through those cables – phone calls, Internet searches, Facebook activity, emails, etc. – is gathered, recorded and stored by GCHQ.  This information gathering program is referred to as “Tempora”.  It is being reported that GCHQ records 600 million “telephone events” every day.  In addition, GCHQ shares all of the data that it gathers with the NSA.  Reportedly, there are 850,000 people in the United States that have top secret clearance that have access to this data.  Needless to say, nothing that you do on your phone or on the Internet will ever be “private” ever again.

The Guardian first broke the story about Tempora thanks to information that it received from whistleblower Edward Snowden.  According to the Guardian, Tempora has been operational for about 18 months…

Hundreds protest Obama's visit to South Africa

WANDOO MAKURDI

June 28, 2013

"JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Hundreds of protesters marched to the U.S. embassy in South Africa on Friday in a peaceful protest against the impending visit by President Barack Obama.

The demonstrators opposed U.S. policy on Cuba, the war in Afghanistan, global warming and other issues. The rally in Pretoria was organized by trade unionists and members of the South African Communist Party.

The protesters want to raise public awareness and warn U.S. citizens about human rights violations committed by the Obama administration, which includes the non-closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison holding terrorism suspects, said campaign coordinator Mbuyiseni Ndlozi."

Obama hails Mandela 'inspiration' in South Africa visit

June 29, 2013

US President Barack Obama has praised Nelson Mandela as "an inspiration to the world" while visiting South Africa.

"The US leader, who was speaking in Pretoria after talks with President Jacob Zuma, does not intend to visit the 94-year-old, who has been critically ill for nearly a week.

But he met the Mandela family in private and spoke by telephone to his wife, Graca Machel.

Riot police clashed with anti-Obama protesters in Soweto.

The American leader was in Soweto to deliver a speech to young African leaders at the University of Johannesburg.

According to Mr Zuma, Mr Mandela remains "stable but critical", and he added that he had "every hope that he will be out of hospital soon."

Obama South Africa Trip: President Tells Leaders To Follow Nelson Mandela's Example

June 29, 2013

Julie Pace

"JOHANNESBURG — Paying tribute to his personal hero, President Barack Obama met privately Saturday with Nelson Mandela's family as the world anxiously awaited news on the condition of the ailing 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader.

Obama, who has spoken movingly about Mandela throughout his trip to Africa, praised the former South African president's "moral courage" during remarks from the grand Union Buildings where Mandela was inaugurated as his nation's first black president.

The U.S. president also called on the continent's leaders, including in neighboring Zimbabwe, to take stock of Mandela's willingness to put country before self and step down after one term despite his immense popularity.

"We as leaders occupy these spaces temporarily and we don't get so deluded that we think the fate of our country doesn't depend on how long we stay in office," Obama said during a news conference with South African President Jacob Zuma.

Obama's stop in South Africa marked the midway point of a weeklong trip to Africa, his most significant engagement with the continent since taking office in 2009."

15 people taken to hospital after Ybor City post office evacuated

July 1, 2013

"YBOR CITY --

Fifteen people were taken to Tampa General Hospital after someone noticed a leaking package at the Ybor City post office, officials said.

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, crews responded to the post office on 12th Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. after an employee called 911 to report a package that was leaking. The leaking package was taken outside of the building by one of the employees.

Police officers and firefighters then evacuated the building and secured the scene.

Officials said the first person who came into direct contact with the package complained of some mild irritation on his hands. The number of employees who had complaints related to the package then climbed to at least 15.

The affected employees are being taken to the hospital for evaluation.  Officials said some of them are experiencing minor symptoms, like skin irritation, while others are being transported as a precaution.

Tampa Fire Rescue's Hazmat Team is now working to determine what chemical was inside the package."

Live link to the people in Egypt

Just a few minutes ago the crowd went crazy celebrating and a tingling shiver went right through my whole body, they are in uproar in what seems like a wave of good news has swept over them, i really have not idea what it is at present.

The crew of RT deserve a heap of praise for covering this imo, quite unlike those of the mainstream media MSM who do not.

Thanks Icanseeatoms for the link and I am with you as I consider RT the replacement of the syndicated and corrupted BBC they do try to report the news all the news even when it does not suit all parties.

Isn't it amazing the energy happiness generates as opposed to demonstrations of war etc..

Mother Teresa was asked to attend a demonstration against war to which she answered when you have a demonstration for Peace I will attend  ;)

I think she knew something about what we see in this video and EVERYONE should take heart from it.

Nice one  :)
