  2. Nasa finds (could have found) evidence of 'life on Mars': Curiosity rover picks up methane 'burps' that could be coming from alien organisms Dec. 16, 2014 Andrew Griffin Mars Curiosity rover picks up 'burps' of methane — which could be evidence of life on the planet "Evidence of life on Mars could have been found by Nasa's Curiosity Rover. Mysterious spikes of methane that cannot easily be explained by geology or other theories have been found by one of the instruments on the robot, which landed on the planet in 2012. Scientists can’t be sure what is causing the spikes, but it is possible that it could be very small, bacteria-like living organisms. If the gas is coming from living, breathing microbes then it would mark one of the biggest discoveries in history. On Earth, 95% of methane comes from microbial organisms. Scientists have said that the rover now has to test and re-test the possibility of life, ahead of a manned mission in 2020 that would look for the source of the methane." "Previous satellite observations have detected unusual plumes of methane on the planet, but none as extraordinary as the sudden "venting" measured at Gale Crater, where evidence suggests water once flowed billions of years ago. The laboratory onboard the rover has been sniffing methane in the atmosphere a dozen times in the last 12 months. In late 2013 and early 2014, the amount of methane flared up, and then receded. Other possible explanations include the Sun's rays degrading organic material that was left behind by meteors, Nasa scientists said at the press conference announcing the news. But that explanation still relies on the original material being deposited, they said." snip http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/nasa-finds-evidence-of-life-on-mars-9929510.html

    Juno Jupiter Mission

NASA TV live coverage of Jupiter begins at 10:30pm Eastern Daylight Time 4 July 2016 https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/juno/main/index.html ******** NASA's Juno spacecraft is scheduled to enter into orbit around Jupiter Monday night (July 4), ending its nearly five-year trek to the solar system's biggest planet. The key event Monday is a 35-minute engine burn at 11:18 p.m. EDT (0318 GMT on Tuesday), which is designed to slow Juno down enough to be captured by Jupiter's powerful gravity. If something goes seriously wrong with this burn, the solar-powered Juno will zoom right past the gas giant, and the science goals of the $1.1 billion mission — which include mapping the gravitational and magnetic fields of Jupiter, and characterizing its internal structure — will go unachieved. [Photos: NASA's Juno Mission to Jupiter] Here's a primer on how Juno's highly anticipated Jupiter arrival should go down Monday night, along with a few notes about what to expect from the mission over the longer term. (Note: All times below are "Earth-receive times" — i.e., when confirmation that maneuvers occurred will be received by Juno's handlers in mission control. It currently takes 48 minutes for light to travel from Jupiter to Earth, so the actual maneuvers happen 48 minutes before Earth-receive time.) 4. Surprise! Newfound Asteroid Is 'Quasi-Moon' of Earth June 16, 2016 Mike Wall video at link "It seems the moon is not Earth's only cosmic companion. The newly discovered asteroid 2016 HO3 orbits the sun in such a way that the space rock never strays too far from Earth, making it a "quasi-satellite" of our planet, scientists say. "One other asteroid — 2003 YN107 — followed a similar orbital pattern for a while over 10 years ago, but it has since departed our vicinity," Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement Wednesday (June 15). snip "This new asteroid is much more locked onto us," Chodas added. "Our calculations indicate 2016 HO3 has been a stable quasi-satellite of Earth for almost a century, and it will continue to follow this pattern as Earth's companion for centuries to come." Indeed, 2016 HO3 is the best example of an Earth quasi-satellite ever found, scientists said. The asteroid was discovered on April 27 by scientists using the Pan-STARRS 1 survey telescope in Hawaii. 2016 HO3's exact size is unknown, but researchers think it's between 130 feet and 330 feet wide (40 to 100 meters). snip http://www.space.com/33185-earth-quasi-moon-asteroid-2016-ho3.html
  5. 'Destructive Electrons Streaking Into Earth's Atmosphere at Near Light Speed' July 27, 2015 Press Trust of India Image: NASA "Potentially destructive high-energy electrons are streaking into Earth's atmosphere from space at velocities approaching the speed of light, scientists say.Researchers have now launched a project in Antarctica to record X-rays produced as falling electrons collide with the Earth's atmosphere. Particle onslaught can lead to ozone depletion and damage to the orbital satellites that provide us with the navigation, communication, weather and military-recognisance information upon which we have become dependent, researchers said. These satellites fly through the Van Allen radiation belts - giant concentric layers of charged particles held in place by the Earth's magnetic field. An increase in particle density and charge brought about by solar activity can raise the level of threat to our critical satellites. Scientists engaged in a unique study of this electronic bombardment, for the first time employing two distinctly different and distant vantage points high above the Earth. "This is exciting for us because we are integrating data collected by our instruments with the data from Nasa's Van Allen Probes," said Robyn Millan, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the Dartmouth College in US. Millan uses instruments carried aloft by balloons launched from Antarctica, rising as high as 125,000 feet. Supported by Nasa, the project is called BARREL, an acronym for Balloon Array for Radiation belt Relativistic Electron Losses. The instruments record the X-rays produced as the falling electrons collide with the atmosphere." snip http://gadgets.ndtv.com/science/news/destructive-electrons-streaking-into-earths-atmosphere-at-near-light-speed-720457 The study: Global-scale coherence modulation of radiation-belt electron loss from plasmaspheric hisshttp://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v523/n7559/full/nature14515.html A flare that took place in January of 2014 was mentioned, think it was this one NASA Releases Images of January Solar Flare January 7, 2014 NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which captures an image of the sun every 1.5 seconds, shows a mid-level solar flare at the center of the sun on Jan. 7, 2014. Image Credit: NASA/SDO "The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 5:13 a.m. EST on Jan. 7, 2014. Images of the flare were captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and showed that it came from an active region on the sun that currently sports one of the largest sunspots seen in the last 10 years. Sunspots are regions of strong and complex magnetic fields on the sun's surface. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. To see how this event may impact Earth, please visit NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center at http://spaceweather.gov, the U.S. government's official source for space weather forecasts, alerts, watches and warnings. Launched in December of 2010 from McMurdo Station in Antarctica, the research balloon was a test run and it bobbed lower every day like it had some kind of leak. But every day for five days it rose back up in the sky to some 112,000 feet in the air. Robyn Millan arrived in Antarctica on Nov. 19, 2010 to launch test balloons for the BARREL project. Credits: Henry Cathey Down on Earth, physicist Robyn Millan was cheering it on, hoping the test launch would bode well for the success of her grand idea: launches in 2013 and 2014 of 20 such balloons to float in the circular wind patterns above the South Pole. Each balloon will help track electrons from space that get swept up in Earth's magnetic field and slide down into our atmosphere. Such electrons are an integral part of the turbulent magnetic space weather system that extends from the sun to Earth. A professor at Dartmouth College, Millan is the principal investigator for a project called BARREL, or Balloon Array for RBSP Relativistic Electron Losses. Millan's proposal will work hand in hand with NASA's Radiation Belt Space Probes (RBSP) mission, two NASA spacecraft due to launch in 2012 to study a mysterious part of Earth's magnetic environs called the Van Allen radiation belts. The radiation belts are made up of two regions, each one a gigantic donut of protons and electrons that surrounds Earth. "We're both looking at the loss of particles from the radiation belts," says Millan. "RBSP sits in space near the equatorial plane and looks at the particles along magnetic field lines there. These particles come into our atmosphere – following magnetic field lines to their base at the Poles – and produce X-rays. BARREL measures those X-rays. Together we can combine measurements of the same set of particles." snip http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sunearth/news/barrel-antarctica.html
  6. Jeremy Kaplan December 6, 2013 Americans from Buzz Aldrin to president Barack Obama say it’s a waste of time to put men back on the moon -- so why are foreign countries so eager to take that one small step? While several private American companies are planning robotic missions to the moon, China launched a man-sized robotic scout to the moon on Monday. The country’s recent manned missions and efforts to build a new space base suggest a future manned mission to the moon, though why is an open question. Speculation has run from the desire to build a military missile base -- a Death Star of sorts -- to national pride to simple economics. The answer may be far simpler: The moon is “easy” to get to. “If you’re still trying to test out your space legs, it’s a great place to do it,” said one NASA engineer familiar with the agency’s plans. NASA’s current space agenda includes a highly challenging project to tow an asteroid back to Earth, as well as transporting men to Mars within two decades -- projects of vast technical complexity compared with the moon landings America ended four decades ago. snip Bigelow Aerospace’s CEO recently said he wanted to sell property on the moon, a Japanese firm suggested a solar panel ring around the moon, and China’s Chang’e 3 lander -- which should touch down on the moon in mid-December -- will be the first controlled landing since the Soviet Union’s Luna-24 mission in 1976. China’s mission could serve as a wake-up call to the world, Moon Express CEO Bob Richards said. “We’re kind of waiting to see if it’s the Sputnik of our generation,” he told FoxNews.com. http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/12/06/why-is-china-targeting-moon-and-should-nasa-as-well/ sure seems to me that the entity said China would be everywhere got that one right entity!!!
  7. NASA to test flying saucer spacecraft over Hawaii Brook Hays June 3, 2014 "Regardless of the outcome, we know we will learn many important things about this technology," said Michael Gazarik, NASA’s associate administrator for space technology An artistic rendering of NASA's Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator in flight. (NASA/JPL-Caltech) "HONOLULU, June 3 (UPI) --A flying saucer is expected to appear in the skies above Hawaii later this week. Its controllers won't be little green men, but NASA engineers on the ground at mission control headquarters. NASA's Low Density Supersonic Decelerator, or LDSD, is a saucer-like prototype -- the type of vehicle astronauts could eventually use on a mission to Mars. The space agency plans to test the craft on Thursday. The saucer will be carried up to the stratosphere by a hot air balloon. Once at 120,000 feet, LDSD will be dropped. Four small rocket motors will then kick in, generating the saucer's signature spin. Once stabilized by the rotation, the craft will be launched toward space by its solid-fuel booster rockets." snip http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2014/06/03/NASA-to-test-flying-saucer-spacecraft-over-Hawaii/9361401817361/
  8. http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/574079/20141126/woman-former-nasa-employee-humans-mars-1979.htm#.VHbaA9KUcuc This article might be of interest. During the Viking lander mission, a woman called Jackie claims to have seen 2 people, dressed in spacesuits walking towards the lander. She also said that the spacesuits looked protective, but were not like the ones our astronauts wore. There is a link to an audio file where Jackie talks about it. The article is short but there is also a second link to a youtube video where another man who worked for NASA is also making the same claim. This is important because the article appears in the Australian Edition of International Business Times, and unless I'm mistaken, I sense that these types of articles are purposefully being filtered into mainstream media, possibly with an aim to desensitise the general public. Most comments are negative, stupid, ignorant and recalcitrant - but that's the general population anyway, however there are some comments that are open minded.
  9. NASA Begins Sixth Year of Airborne Antarctic Ice Change Study October 165, 2014 NASA’s DC-8 research aircraft will be flying scientists and instruments over Antarctica to study changes in the continent’s ice sheet, glaciers and sea ice. Image Credit: NASA "NASA is carrying out its sixth consecutive year of Operation IceBridge research flights over Antarctica to study changes in the continent’s ice sheet, glaciers and sea ice. This year’s airborne campaign, which began its first flight Thursday morning, will revisit a section of the Antarctic ice sheet that recently was found to be in irreversible decline. For the next several weeks, researchers will fly aboard NASA’s DC-8 research aircraft out of Punta Arenas, Chile. This year also marks the return to western Antarctica following 2013’s campaign based at the National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Station. “We are curious to see how much these glaciers have changed in two years,” said Eric Rignot, IceBridge science team co-lead and glaciologist at the University of California, Irvine and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. IceBridge will use a suite of instruments that includes a laser altimeter, radar instruments, cameras, and a gravimeter, which is an instrument that detects small changes in gravity. These small changes reveal how much mass these glaciers have lost. Repeated annual measurements of key glaciers maintains a long-term record of change in the Antarctic that goes back to NASA’s Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) which stopped collecting data in 2009. IceBridge researchers plan to measure previously unsurveyed regions of Antarctica. One example is a plan to look at the upper portions of Smith Glacier in West Antarctica, which is thinning faster than any other glaciers in the region. The mission also plans to collect data in portions of the Antarctic Peninsula, such as the Larsen C, George VI and Wilkins ice shelves and the glaciers that drain into them. The Antarctic Peninsula has been warming faster than the rest of the continent." snip http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/october/nasa-begins-sixth-year-of-airborne-antarctic-ice-change-study-0/
  10. Supermoon On August 10 Will Be Biggest Of 2014 August 8, 2014 By Sara Gates "There's going to be an extra-special moon this weekend. On Aug. 10, when the moon turns full at 2:10 p.m. EDT, skywatchers will be treated to the sight of a so-called "supermoon" -- and it will be the largest supermoon of the year. The phenomenon -- any full moon that coincides with the time in the moon's orbit when it's closest to Earth -- should be visible on Sunday night after sunset. Head over to the U.S. Naval Observatory's website to check local times for the supermoon in your area. How spectacular will this supermoon be? In comparison to other full moons, supermoons can be up to 14 percent closer and 30 percent brighter, according to NASA. In addition, the August 2014 supermoon will become full during the same hour that the moon comes closest to the Earth (lunar perigee), meaning it will outshine other full moons that have fallen on the same day as the lunar perigee." snip http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/08/supermoon-august-2014-how-to-see_n_5659215.html

Pearlman First and last launches, for now: The Apollo 4 Saturn V liftoff (left) and STS-135 space shuttle launch were the first and last to leave Launch Pad 39A in 1967 and 2011, respectively. collectSPACE.com/NASA "NASA has selected Space Exploration Technologies, better known as SpaceX, to lease a historic launch pad for the company's commercial rockets. The space agency announced Friday (Dec. 13) that it is beginning negotiations with SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., to take over exclusive use of Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA used the pad for decades to send astronauts to the moon and later launch space shuttles into Earth orbit. "Permitting the use and operation of this valuable national asset by a private-sector, commercial space partner will ensure its continued viability and allow for its continued use in support of U.S. space activities," NASA said in its statement announcing the selection. [Photos: The Rockets and Spaceships of SpaceX] SpaceX, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, was one of two private spaceflight companies vying for the use of Launch Pad 39A. Blue Origin, founded by Amazon.com chief Jeff Bezos, had proposed using the launch complex as a multi-user facility supporting other rocket companies, including United Launch Alliance (ULA). SpaceX proposed to use to use Pad 39A for its own future launches. The company is currently contracted by NASA to launch its unmanned Dragon capsules to resupply the International Space Station and is currently vying for the agency's business to fly astronauts to and from the space station beginning in 2017. SpaceX has previously said it was considering use of Pad 39A for launching larger models of its Falcon rocket. NASA chose SpaceX after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) denied a protest filed against the agency by Blue Origin in September. Blue Origin had raised concerns about the competitive process NASA was employing in its attempt to lease use of Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A). snip http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2013/1216/NASA-to-grant-SpaceX-lease-to-historic-launch-pad

    NASA's Flying Saucer for Mars

I don't know about this one. All of this Mars stuff lately gives me a strange feeling. And if anyone understands the title to this article, please explain! What is meant by putting "a two-story building on Mars"? How can NASA put a two-story building on Mars? Its very own flying saucer. NASA's LDSD project aims to develop the capacity to land larger payloads on Mars, perhaps even humans. But first, NASA needs a way to decelerate capsules traveling at supersonic speeds. By Daniel B. 18. Not sure if this was psoted on chani already ... Images captured by Opportunity show the mysterious rock 'appeared' on an outcrop that had been empty just 12 Martian days ('Sols') earlier 20 January 2014 A mysterious 'jelly doughnut rock' which appeared in front of the Opportunity rover is “like nothing we’ve ever seen before”, according to Mars exploration scientists at Nasa. Experts said they were “completely confused” by both the origins and makeup of the object, which is currently being investigated by Opportunity’s various measuring instruments. Astronomers noticed the new rock had “appeared” without any explanation on an outcrop which had been empty just days earlier. The rover has been stuck photographing the same region of Mars for more than a month due to bad weather, with scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California monitoring the images it sends. Nasa issued a Mars status report entitled “encountering a surprise”, and lead Mars Exploration rover scientist Steve Squyres told a JPL event it seems the planet literally “keeps throwing new things at us”. He said the images, from 12 Martian days apart, were from no more than a couple of weeks ago. “We saw this rock just sitting here. It looks white around the edge in the middle and there’s a low spot in the centre that’s dark red – it looks like a jelly doughnut. “And it appeared, just plain appeared at that spot – and we haven’t ever driven over that spot.” Squyres said his team had two theories on how the rock got there – that there’s “a smoking hole in the ground somewhere nearby” and it was caused by a meteor, or that it was “somehow flicked out of the ground by a wheel” as the rover went by. “We had driven a metre or two away from here, and I think the idea that somehow we mysteriously flicked it with a wheel is the best explanation,” Squyres said. Yet the story got even stranger when Opportunity investigated further. Squyres explained: “We are as we speak situated with the rover’s instruments deployed making measurements of this rock. All Sky Fireball Network

All Sky Fireball Network NEW: Every night, a network of NASA all-sky cameras scans the skies above the United States for meteoritic fireballs. Automated software maintained by NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office calculates their orbits, velocity, penetration depth in Earth's atmosphere and many other characteristics. Daily results are presented here on Spaceweather.com. On Nov. 1, 2013, the network reported 11 fireballs. (9 sporadics, 2 Orionids) In this diagram of the inner solar system, all of the fireball orbits intersect at a single point--Earth. The orbits are color-coded by velocity, from slow (red) to fast (blue). http://www.spaceweather.com/
