Military Coup Reportedly Under Way In Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is on edge amid speculation that a military coup is in progress, with army tanks seen outside the capital a day after the army commander threatened to "step in" to calm political tensions over the president's firing of his vice president. The Associated Press said it saw three tanks with several soldiers in a convoy on a road heading toward an army barracks just outside the capital, Harare, while Reuters reported that four tanks were seen heading toward the capital.

According to Reuters, two other tanks were seen parked beside the main road from Harare to Chinhoyi, about 20km from the city. Eyewitnesses also saw military vehicles blocking major roads outside the city.

Multiple injuries and fatalities in 'massive' Amtrak derailment onto I-5 south of Seattle

Dec. 18, 2017   Michael Sheetz

"The Amtrak derailment happened on the first day of service on the route between Olympia and Tacoma.

Multiple injuries and fatalities have been reported, a Pierce County says.
About 83 people were on the train, Amtrak says.
All lanes of the southbound I-5 in the area are closed, the Washington state Department of Transportation says.

An Amtrak train carrying about 83 people derailed during morning rush hour Monday southwest of Seattle and landed on Interstate 5 on the first day of service on the route. Multiple injuries and fatalities were reported.

The Thurston County Sheriff tweeted about a "massive incident involving a train" derailing on the Mounts Road overpass midway between Tacoma and Olympia. Police asked drivers to avoid the area near the overpass and Niqually Valley.

"All lanes of southbound I-5 at Mounts Road closed," the Washington state Transportation Department said in a tweet. The accident involving Amtrak train 501 happened south of the city of DuPont."

Object on tracks may be cause of deadly Amtrak derailment

IF that's the case, what would it take to derail a train? How large of an "object placed on the tracks"   Wonder if speed was a factor? 81 mph it was traveling.  IF they wanted rapid transit, then a monorail right down I 5 would have made more sense to me.  As bad as this appears to be, it could have been so much worse.  A little earlier timing, and whatever "object" on the tracks, just a little more towards the center of that bridge, possibly could have caused train cars to fall on all 8 lanes of what, during rush hours, is pretty much, bumper to bumper traffic.  IF this was deliberate, then those "who did it" were not after as many deaths as possible, but were after headlines, and instilling fear.

@unity, considering that stretch of freeway, how busy it is between 6 9 am, I am thankful for whatever intervention there was, because it could have been so much worse.  Sorry for those who died or were injured, and for their families, but thankful for those who escaped unharmed, at the same time.  The story is told below.

DuPont, Washington Fought to Keep Amtrak Out Before Killer Crash

Dec. 18, 2017    Winston Ross

"Officials warned a new route for a high-speed passenger train would be a disaster. The first trip proved them right.

DuPONT, Washington — Shawna Gasak was on her way to work in this bedroom community south of Tacoma on Monday morning when she saw traffic backed up past the start of the on-ramp to Interstate 5 south. She skipped it and headed onward, across an overpass, scanning the freeway as she crossed, to spot what she figured was a car accident.

What she saw was a train car dangling off a bridge, above dozens of stalled vehicles. She would later learn that an Amtrak-operated train carrying about 80 passengers and seven crew members en route from Seattle to Portland had derailed, spilling 13 cars off of the track, killing at least six and injuring dozens of others. The train was on its inaugural run along a brand-new route that cost $181 million and that promised to shave ten minutes off of the journey.

“I didn’t think it was real,” Gasak told The Daily Beast. “This is our worst nightmare.”

Gasak is a city councilwoman in DuPont, and what she means by “our worst nightmare” is that she and dozens of other community leaders have fought against the redirection of this stretch of railway for years, worried that shifting the line through quiet DuPont was an idea that would end in tragedy.

The National Transportation Safety Board immediately dispatched a “Go” team to find out why the train careened off its tracks Monday morning. But already speed appears to be one of the main culprits: the posted speed limit at the curve the Amtrak Cascades train failed to negotiate was 30 miles per hour. The train, according to transitdocs.com, a website that calculates Amtrak speeds using data from the railroad’s tracker app, was humming along at 81 mph."

$181 Million for 10 minutes less   Doing 81mph in a 30mph zone    smh

Emergency Crews Responding To Home of Bill & Hillary Clinton

Jan. 3, 2018

"Police and firefighters were reportedly dispatched to the home of Bill and Hillary Clinton2 on Wednesday.

First responders were on the scene located at 15 Old House Lane in Chappaqua, New York.

According to scanner traffic, a fire broke out in a bedroom on the second floor of the residence and has since been extinguished.

The extent of the damage was not known—no injuries were reported."

Fire at Bill and Hillary Clinton property fuels comical Twitter flurry

DML news   Jan. 3, 2017

"A fire reportedly broke out at the home of Bill and Hillary Clinton in Chappaqua, New York Wednesday afternoon, but was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported. It was not clear whether the Clintons were home at the time the fire occurred.

New Castle Police reportedly confirmed that the fire was on the couple’s “main property,” and not at the house next door, which they purchased in 2016.

NBC News stated that aerial images appeared to show activity by the fire department focused on a second, smaller dwelling at the rear of the main house.

Reports have stated that the fire broke out on the second floor, and some reporters have claimed it was in a spare bedroom that was being used as an office, but that is unconfirmed.

The lack of information over the exact details of the fire has only fueled speculation, and Twitter has erupted in a flurry of comical remarks over the incident, as many users are joking that “evidence” was being burned.

The Clintons purchased the five-bedroom, 19th-century house for $1.7 million in 1999. In 2016, prior to the presidential election, they bought a four-bedroom house next door for $1.16 million."

Firefighters rush to the home of Hillary and Bill Clinton after blaze breaks out in a bedroom of the guest house

Chris Spargo    Jan. 3, 2018

"A fire broke out in a bedroom on the property of Bill and Hillary Clinton Wednesday afternoon in Chappaqua.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to out out the blaze in less than 30 minutes.

In a bizarre statement, Clinton's communications director called a report about the fire false before confirming there was in fact a fire.

'This report is wrong, & creating much hysteria. Yes, a small fire broke out in the facility today on Clinton property, in a building not connected to their home,' wrote Nick Merrill on Twitter."

Very interesting story that has already changed several times. The call went in at 2:51 pm and was already out by 3:17 pm.  PDQ imo. First said no one home (but then who called in the fire?) to not knowing where they were, from the fire being in a bedroom of guest house, to being in second floor of main house bedroom/OFFICE.   Now back to being a "facility" NOT connected to the home.  So then, IF there is so much discrepancy, regarding the fire's actual location on the property and which facility it was actually in, then how the heck did the firemen get there, and put it out in less than 1/2 an hour? (FD about 1/2 mile away, so really quite close, they'd have been there in minutes) Locating the fire could have taken time though, lol     Strange, a house they owned in Arkansas was completely destroyed by fire just 6 months ago.

Breezy, from OZ, the US situation is looking crazier and crazier.

Do you feel/think that we're on the cusp of a change? Either forced or just the current/old ways at their end.

Jammer, That all important memo is due to be released tomorrow, with more memos/revelations to come in the future. Some in particular, are making such an issue over revealing the info, that it has to make a person wonder, exactly wth has gone on?  Corruption seems to be the order of the day.  Corruption involves both major parties, not just one.  It's almost as though people have taken complete leave of their senses. There are so many factors involved in all of this, it is enough to make any person's head spin.  I feel we could face some really rough times in the near future, and hope we're ready for it, but at the same time, in order to straighten this mess out, we have to start somewhere.  (remember our entity stated that people would do crazy things)

Do I feel we are on the cusp of change, yes!  We really must change in order to survive.  Is it going to happen in a hurry?  I don't think so.  This situation has not happened over night, it has taken a couple centuries to get us to this point.  So now that the time has come, let us hope we come out of it, in a better place than where we were when it started. We must do what we must, take care of ourselves, each other, and this planet.  I think the future is going to present us with one heck of a learning curve.   We are aware that whatever affects the US, eventually affects the whole world.  So time to send everyone a little love and positive vibes, we can do this, because we must.  I think we can all agree, change is necessary, and there's no better time than now.

Nicely said Bree.

The world used to turn to the USA because they were a force of good.

I still think the people are good, and trying to navigate and hold on to some semblance of what was, despite the system and leaders poisoning the legacy.

When Trump said let's make America great again, all I could think of was no, just be 'good' again.

You could always come downunder again if things get nuts. Plenty of us would have ya!  :)

February 2, 2018
The Honorable Devin Nunes Chairman, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence United States Capitol Washington, DC 20515
Dear Mr. Chairman:
On January 29, 2018, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (hereinafter "the Committee") voted to disclose publicly a memorandum containing classified information provided to the Committee in connection with its oversight activities (the "Memorandum," which is attached to this letter). As provided by clause 11(g) of Rule X of the House of Representatives, the Committee has forwarded this Memorandum to the President based on its determination that the release of the Memorandum would serve the public interest.
The Constitution vests the President with the authority to protect national security secrets from disclosure. As the Supreme Court has recognized, it is the President's responsibility to classify, declassify, and control access to information bearing on our intelligence sources and methods and national defense. See, e.g., Dep 't of Navy v. Egan, 484 U.S. 518, 527 (1988). In order to facilitate appropriate congressional oversight, the Executive Branch may entrust classified information to the appropriate committees of Congress, as it has done in connection with the Committee's oversight activities here. The Executive Branch does so on the assumption that the Committee will responsibly protect such classified information, consistent with the laws of the United States.
The Committee has now determined that the release of the Memorandum would be appropriate. The Executive Branch, across Administrations of both parties, has worked to accommodate congressional requests to declassify specific materials in the public interest.' However, public release of classified information by unilateral action of the Legislative Branch is extremely rare and raises significant separation of powers concerns. Accordingly, the Committee's request to release the Memorandum is interpreted as a request for declassification pursuant to the President's authority.
The President understands that the protection of our national security represents his highest obligation. Accordingly, he has directed lawyers and national security staff to assess the declassification request, consistent with established standards governing the handling of classified information, including those under Section 3.1(d) of Executive Order 13526. Those standards permit declassification when the public interest in disclosure outweighs any need to protect the infonnation. The White House review process also included input from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department ofJustice. Consistent vvith this review and these standards, the President has determined that declassification of the Memorandum is appropriate.
Based on this assessment and in light of the significant public interest in the memorandum, the President has authorized the declassification of the Memorandum. To be clear, the Memorandum reflects the judgments of its congressional authors. The President understands that oversight concerning matters related to the Memorandum may be continuing. Though the circumstances leading to the declassification through this process am extraordinary, the Executive Branch stands ready to work with Congress to accommodate oversight itquests consistent with applicable standards and processes, including the need to protect intelligence sources and methods.
Sincerely, Donald F. McGahn II Counsel to the President

Declassified by order of the President January 18, 2018 February 2, 2018 To: HPSCI Majority Members From: HPSCI Majority Staff Subject: Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Abuses at the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation
This memorandum provides Members an update on significant facts relating to the Committee's ongoing investigation into the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and their use of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) during the 2016 presidential election cycle. Our findings, which are detailed below, 1) raise concerns with the legitimacy and legality of certain DOJ and FBI interactions with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FLSC), and 2) represent a troubling breakdown of legal processes established to protect the American people from abuses related to the FISA process.
Investigation Update
On October 21, 2016, DOJ and FBI sought and received a FISA probable cause order Casa under Title VII) authorizing electronic surveillance on Carter Page from the FISC. Page is a U.S. citizen who served as a volunteer advisor to the Trump presidential campaign. Consistent with requirements under FISA, the application had to be first certified by the Director or Deputy Director of the FBI. It then required the approval of the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General (DAG), or the Senate-confirmed Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division.
The FBI and DOJ obtained one initial FISA warrant targeting Carter Page and three FISA renewals from the FISC. As required by statute (50 U.S.C. §1805(dX1)), a FISA order on an American citizen must be renewed by the FISC every 90 days and each renewal requires a separate folding of probable cause. Then-Director James Comey signed three FISA applications in question on behalf of the FBI, and Deputy Director Andrew McCabe signed one. Then-DAG Sally Yates, then-Acting DAG Dana Boente, and DAG Rod Rosenstein each signed one or more FISA applications on behalf of DOJ. Due to the sensitive nature of foreign intelligence activity, FISA submissions (including renewals) before the FISC are classified. As such, the public's confidence in the integrity of the FISA process depends on the court's ability to hold the government to the highest standard—particularly as it relates to surveillance of American citizens. However, the FISC's rigor in protecting the rights of Americans, which is remtorced by 90-day renewals of surveillance orders, is necessarily dependent on the govenunent's production to the court of all material and relevant facts. This should include information potentially favorable to the target of the FISA
application that is known by the government. In the case of Carter Page, the government had at least four independent opportunities before the FISC to accurately provide an accounting of the relevant facts. However, our findings indicate that, as described below, material and relevant information was omitted.

1) The "dossier" compiled by Christopher Steele (Steele dossier) on behalf of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Hillary Clinton campaign formed an essential part of the Carter Page FISA application. Steele was a longtime FBI source who was paid over $160,000 by the DNC and Clinton campaign, via the law firm Perkins Coie and research firm Fusion GPS, to obtain derogatory information on Donald Trump's ties to Russia.

a) Neither the initial application in October 2016, nor any of the renewals, disclose or reference the role of the DNC, Clinton campaign, or any party/campaign in funding Steele's efforts, even though the political origins of the Steele dossier were then known to senior DOJ and FBI officials.

b) The initial FISA application notes Steele was working for a named U.S. person, but does not name Fusion GPS and principal Glenn Simpson, who was paid by a U.S. law final (Perkins Coie) representing the DNC (even though it was known by DOS at the time that political actors were involved with the Steele dossier). The application does not mention Steele was ultimately working on behalf of—and paid by--the DNC and Clinton campaign, or that the FBI had separately authorized payment to Steele for the same information.

2) The Carter Page FISA application also cited extensively a September 23, 2016, Yahoo News article by Michael Isikoff, which focuses on Page's July 2016 trip to Moscow. This article does not corroborate the Steele dossier because it is derived from information leaked by Steele himself to Yahoo News. The Page FISA application incorrectly assesses that Steele did not directly provide information to Yahoo News. Steele has admitted in British court filings that he met with Yahoo News--and several other outlets—in September 2016 at the direction of Fusion GPS. Perkins Cole was aware of Steele's initial media contacts because they hosted at least one meeting in Washington D.C. in 2016 with Steele and Fusion GPS where this matter was discussed.

a) Steele was suspended and then terminated as an FBI source for what the FBI defines as the most serious of violations--an unauthorized disclosure to the media of his relationship with the FBI in an October 30, 2016, Mother Jones article by David Corn. Steele should have been terminated for his previous undisclosed contacts with Yahoo and other outlets in September—before the Page application was submitted to

the FISC in October—but Steele improperly concealed from and lied to the FBI about those contacts.
b) Steele's numerous encounters with the media violated the cardinal rule of source handling—maintaining confidentiality—and denaonstrated that Steele had become a less than reliable source for the FBI.
3) Before and after Steele was terminated as a source, he maintained contact with DOJ via then-Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr, a senior DOJ official who worked closely with Deputy Attorneys General Yates and later Rosenstein. Shortly after the election, the FBI began interviewing Ohr, documenting bis communications with Steele. For example, hi September 2016, Steele admitted to Oho his feelings against then-candidate Trump when Steele said he "was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about !Ana not being president." This clear evidence of Steele's bias was recorded by Ohr at the time and subsequently in official FBI files—but not reflected in any of the Page FISA applications.

a) During this same titne period, Ohr's wife was employed by Fusion GPS to assist in the cultivation of opposition research on Trump. Ohr later provided the FBI with all of his wife's opposition research, paid for by the ANC and Clinton campaign via Fusion GPS. The Ohrs' relationship with Steele and Fusion GPS was inexplicably concealed from the FISC.
4) According to the head of the FBI's counterintelligence division, Assistant Director Bill Priestap, corroboration of the Steele dossier was in its "infancy" at the time of the initial Page FISA application. After Steele was terminated, a source validation report conducted by an independent Imit within FBI assessed Steele's reporting as only minimally corroborated. Yet, in early January 2017, Director Comey briefed President-elect Trump on a summary of the Steele dossier, even though it was--according to his June 2017 testimony—"salacious and unverified." While hie FISA application relied on Steele's past record of credible reporting on other unrelated matters, it ignored or concealed his anti-Trump financial and ideological motivations. Furthermore, Deputy Director McCabe testified before the Committee in Deceroper 2017 that no surveillance warrant would have been sought from the FISC without the Steele dossier information.

5) The Page FISA application also mentions information regarding fellow Trump campaign advisor George Papadopoulos, but there is no evidence of any cooperation or conspiracy between Page and Papadopoulos. The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016 by FBI agent Pete Strzok. Strzok was reassigned by the Special Counsel's Office to FBI Human Resources for improper text messages with his mistress, FBI Attorney Lisa Page (no known relation to Carter Page), where they both demonstrated a clear bias against Trump and in favor of Clinton, whom Strzok had also investigated. The Strzok/Lisa Page texts also reflect extensive discussions about the investigation, orchestrating leaks to the media, and include a meeting with Deputy Director McCabe to discuss an "insurance" policy against President Trump's election.

In a televised statement he said he was quitting with immediate effect but said he disagreed with his ANC party's decision.

The ANC had told him to step down or face a vote of no confidence in parliament.

The 75-year-old has been facing calls to give way to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC's new leader.

Mr Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, faces numerous allegations of corruption.

Earlier on Wednesday, police swooped on the Johannesburg home of the powerful and wealthy Gupta family with whom Mr Zuma has close ties."

Stephen Hawking has died

March 13, 2018  (14th in UK)  Alice Truong

"Stephen Hawking, the famed theoretical physicist whose work greatly contributed to scientists’ understanding of black holes and cosmology, has died, his family said in a statement.

Hawking died peacefully in the early morning of March 14—a day science fans are celebrating as Pi Day—at the age of 76. In a statement, his children Lucy, Robert, and Tim said:

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Hawking was a mathematics professor at the University of Cambridge and held 13 honorary degrees. In 2009, then-US president Barack Obama awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor awarded in America. In his speech, Obama said: “From his wheelchair, he has led us on a journey to the farthest and strangest reaches of the cosmos. In so doing, he has stirred our imagination and showed us the power of the human spirit.”
