U.S. cargo plane crashes in Afghanistan, killing 11, officials say

Jeff Schogol

October 1, 2015

"An American C-130 cargo plane crashed early Friday in Afghanistan, killing 11 people, including six U.S. service members, officials said.

The plane crashed at Jalalabad Airport in eastern Afghanistan at about midnight local time.

According to a news released from the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, the plane was assigned to the 774th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron, part of the 455th. First responders are still on the scene, and the cause of the crash was under investigation.

A spokesman for the Air Expeditionary Wing said six U.S. service members who comprised the plane’s crew died, along with five civilian passengers.

No further information was immediately available.

C-130s are used to transport military personnel and cargo."

UN slams 'inexcusable' Afghan hospital air strike that kills 19

Anuj Chopra

October 3, 2015

"A suspected US air strike on a hospital killed 19 people Saturday in the Afghan city of Kunduz, medical charity MSF said, a bombardment that the UN condemned as "inexcusable, and possibly even criminal".

Dozens more were seriously wounded at the facility, a key lifeline that has been running "beyond capacity" during fighting that saw the Taliban seize control of the northern provincial capital for several days.

The strike early Saturday left the building engulfed in flames, with photos posted by Doctors Without Borders showing their staff shocked and dazed.

"At 2:10 am (2040 GMT) local time... the MSF trauma centre in Kunduz was hit several times during sustained bombing and was very badly damaged," the organisation, known by its French initials, said."

ISIS left so weakened by airstrikes and desertion it could be wiped out in just HOURS

October 3, 2015

Nick Gutteridge

"ISLAMIC STATE (ISIS) is now so fragile that its so-called Caliphate could be wiped out in a matter of HOURS, a top terror expert said today.

Western and more recently Russian airstrikes, chaotic leadership and mass defections have weakened the jihadi group to such an extent that it would be unable to repel even a small invasion force.

A terror analyst told Express.co.uk that the fanatics have vastly exaggerated their military strength and called on Western leaders to launch a co-ordinated fightback which would obliterate the hate group.

Dr Afzal Ashraf said ISIS has become its own worst enemy with its campaign of terror against the West, which has prompted an international backlash."

Now I don't know about you, but I'd swear I am watching a play  "All the world's a stage, etc., etc.

Over 450 Syrian militants and 250 criminals wanted by government have laid down their arms and return to peaceful life in the south-west of war-torn country.

Roughly seven hundred armed militants and criminals surrendered themselves to the local authorities in the Syrian Daraa Governorate that is situated next to the border with Jordan in the last two days, national Syrian Arab News Agency Sana reported.

Hundreds of militants and other law offenders decided to hand themselves over to authorities under the terms of a national reconciliation program.

According to media reports, militants have surrendered their arms to law enforcement, including large numbers of machine guns, automatic weapons and sniper rifles.

Russia Claims ISIS Now On The Ropes As Fighters Desert After 60 Airstrikes In 72 Hours

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 10/03/2015 13:15 -0400
One question that’s been asked repeatedly over the past thirteen months is why Washington has been unable to achieve the Pentagon’s stated goal of “degrading and defeating” ISIS despite the fact that the “battle” pits the most advanced air force on the planet against what amounts to a ragtag band of militants running around the desert in basketball shoes.

Those of a skeptical persuasion have been inclined to suggest that perhaps the US isn’t fully committed to the fight. Explanations for that suggestion range from the mainstream (the White House is loathe to get the US into another Mid-East war) to the “conspiratorial” (the CIA created ISIS and thus doesn’t want to destroy the group due to its value as a strategic asset).

The implication in all of this is that a modern army that was truly determined to destroy the group could likely do so in a matter of months if not weeks and so once Russia began flying sorties from Latakia, the world was anxious to see just how long the various rebel groups operating in Syria could hold up under bombardment by the Russian air force.

The answer, apparently, is “less than a week.”

The Largest US Foreign Policy Blunder Since Vietnam Is Complete: Iran Readies Massive Syrian Ground Invasion

On Thursday, in “Mid-East Coup: As Russia Pounds Militant Targets, Iran Readies Ground Invasions While Saudis Panic”, we attempted to cut through all of the Western and Russian media propaganda on the way to describing what Moscow’s involvement in Syria actually portends for the global balance of power. Here are a few excerpts that summarize what’s taking shape in the Middle East:

Putin looks to have viewed this as the ultimate geopolitical win-win. That is, Russia gets to i) expand its influence in the Middle East in defiance of Washington and its allies, a move that also helps to protect Russian energy interests and preserves the Mediterranean port at Tartus, and ii) support its allies in Tehran and Damascus thus preserving the counterbalance to the US-Saudi-Qatar alliance.

Meanwhile, Iran gets to enjoy the support of the Russian military juggernaut on the way to protecting the delicate regional nexus that is the source of Tehran’s Mid-East influence. It is absolutely critical for Iran to keep Assad in power, as the loss of Syria to the West would effectively cut the supply line between Iran and Hezbollah.

It would be difficult to overstate the significance of what appears to be going on here. This is nothing short of a Middle Eastern coup, as Iran looks to displace Saudi Arabia as the regional power broker and as Russia looks to supplant the US as the superpower puppet master.

In short, the Pentagon’s contention that Russia and Iran have formed a Mid-East “nexus” isn’t akin to the Bush administration’s hollow, largely bogus attempt to demonize America’s foreign policy critics in the eyes of the public by identifying an “axis of evil.” Rather, the Pentagon’s assessment was an attempt to come to grips with a very real effort on the part of Moscow and Tehran to tip the scales in the Mid-East away from Riyadh and Washington.

On The Syria Chess Game....Check, Obozo...It's Your Move, And Woe, Woe To You If You Kick The Board...

Posted By: Watchman

Date: Sunday, 4-Oct-2015 15:07:21

Earlier today, we ventured to characterize the breakdown of Washington’s strategy in Syria as the worst US foreign policy blunder since Vietnam.

To be sure, that’s a bold claim, but it’s supported by the sheer number of missteps, bad outcomes, and outright absurdities that have developed in the Mid-East as a result of the effort to oust Bashar al-Assad.

At the most basic level, the support provided by Washington, Riyadh, and Doha for the various Sunni extremist groups battling for control of Syria has created a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions. Hundreds of thousands of people are dead and millions are displaced. As tragic as the situation already is, the conditions are ripe for it to get even worse if the move by Brussels to force recalcitrant EU countries into accepting a migrant quota system they are opposed to ends up triggering a dangerous bout of xenophobia in the Balkans.

Washington’s move to train and arm the Syrian opposition has of course also led directly to the creation of a group of black flag-waving jihadists that have taken the term “extremists” to a whole new level on the way to producing a series of slickly-produced videos depicting the murder of Westerners. This same group is now stomping around between Syria and Iraq wreaking havoc on civilians and committing acts so heinous that even al-Qaeda has condemned them.

Of course the outright chaos the West has managed to create in Syria has now come full circle, providing Iran and Russia with a unique opportunity to tip the scales and seize power in the Mid-East.

What's important to understand here, is that this isn’t confined to Syria.

That is, Iran isn't content to preserve its supply line with Hezbollah and Russia isn't content to play spoiler to the US by propping up Assad. There's something far more meaningful going on here and it can be readily observed in Iraq.

For years, Iran exercised its influence in Iraq via various Shiite militias controlled by Quds commander Qasem Soleimani. Now, it looks as though the deal struck between Tehran and Moscow in July included a power play designed to gradually muscle the US out of the way in Baghdad. The first concrete evidence of this came late last month when Iraq announced an intelligence sharing agreement with Russia and Syria but the story goes far deeper than that. Consider the following from The Washington Institute:

On September 21, the Wall Street Journal reported that forces under the command of Iran, Russia, and Bashar al-Assad were coordinating efforts to secure the Syrian regime. As Moscow sends advanced aircraft, armored vehicles, and more, Iran's Iraqi Shiite proxies have simultaneously stepped up their recruitment and deployment for the Syria war. Since July, their Syria-focused online campaigns have jumped significantly (see chart), morphing from infrequent mentions in late 2014/early 2015 to a full-fledged recruitment program involving a number of newer Iranian-backed groups. These Shiite fighters are now spread across Syria, primarily in the western part of the country, launching operations from the suburbs of Damascus to Idlib.

Following the June 2014 seizure of Mosul and much of northern Iraq by the so-called Islamic State/ISIS, a group called Kataib al-Imam Ali (KIA) announced its creation. Formed by Iranian-controlled splinter elements from Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army, KIA is probably best known for its fierce battlefield reputation and particularly gory videos featuring severed heads and men being cooked above open flames.

When compared to other organizations, KIA's Syria-focused recruitment and propaganda campaign has been the largest. Using messages issued via its offices, billboards, and social media, the group has actively recruited new members, especially around Najaf, Iraq. These efforts began with online imagery connecting its fighters with Sayyeda Zainab, an important Shiite shrine near Damascus. Other posts have announced that Jaafar al-Bindawi, the militia's former head of training and logistics, would be leading the deployment in Syria, while Ali Nizam would serve as the new logistical director for Syrian affairs.

While this effort marks the group's first publicized deployments to Syria, KIA is no newcomer to the war. Prior to its formal creation, and with Iranian assistance, elements of the militia were very active in Syria beginning in 2013. Alaa Hilayl, one of the group's heavily glorified "martyrs" and leader of its submilitia Kataib Malik al-Ashtar, was one of the first Shiite commanders to publicly announce combat operations in the Aleppo area in spring 2013.

Meanwhile, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba (HHN, a.k.a. "The Hezbollah Movement of the Outstanding," or simply Harakat al-Nujaba) has been the other main Iraqi Shiite player in Syria recruitment, and its background is similar to KIA's. HHN emerged from Iranian-controlled Sadrist splinter group Asaib Ahl al-Haq (AAH) in 2013 and is led by that group's cofounder, Sheikh Akram Kaabi.

Internet-based propaganda and recruitment materials (mainly through social media) often serve as harbingers of larger moves by Iran's Iraqi Shiite proxies. This summer, these groups began to disseminate a collection of professionally produced imagery in a highly organized manner, all aimed at raising awareness of the Syria fight and calling for new recruits.

Previously, in fall 2014, the Iranian-backed Iraqi Shiite group Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS) instituted a sporadic Internet recruitment program. The group's fighters were primarily deployed for a failed campaign on Syria's southern front that lasted into early 2015. Meanwhile, HHN initiated its own limited recruitment program from December to April. Both programs demonstrated that Iraqi Shiites would once again play a major role in Syria (see PolicyWatch 2430, "Iraqi Shiite Foreign Fighters on the Rise Again in Syria"). Yet these moves were only the tip of the iceberg.

While May and June were relatively quiet on this front, Iraqi Shiite recruitment for Syria quickly began to rise in July and spiked in August. September saw slightly decreased recruitment and propaganda posts online, but the traffic was still sizable enough to be regarded as a continuation of the Syria program.

According to fighters who promoted recruitment material or were sent to Syria in late July, training for the deployment often lasted around thirty days and took place in Lebanon or Iran. Considering that most training regimens for Shiite fighters heading to Syria have lasted between two and six weeks (depending on specialization), Iran likely timed the uptick in deployments to best demonstrate unity of arms with Russia and Assad. Specifically, the main spike in recruitment activity began in earnest on July 3, the first reports of experienced KIA fighters deploying to Syria emerged on July 20, and Qasem Soleimani -- commander of Iran's elite Qods Force -- met with Russian officials on July 24.

And here's a map from ISW which "depicts confirmed locations of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders in Iraq between October 2014 and October 2015." ISW continues: "orange markers indicate where IRGC personnel were spotted in an area witnessing active military operations [and] asterisks indicate a Soleimani sighting":

In short, what's happened here is that once Tehran secured the support of the Russian air force juggernaut, the IRGC diverted its Iraqi militias to Syria, where they will now join Hezbollah and ensure that Putin's airstrikes are bolstered when needed by effective ground support.

The announcement this week by Baghdad that Iraq would welcome Russian airstrikes against ISIS indicates that once Moscow and Tehran have restored Assad and stabilized Syria, the joint air and ground campaign will move to Iraq, a strategic shift that will complete what we have characterized as an outright Mid-East coup.

If this thesis materializes, it will mean that the West's attempt to destabilize the Assad regime has not only failed, but has in fact opened the door for Iran to seize control of the Mid-East and for Russia to reestablish itself as a global superpower capable of bringing its influence to bear on any nation at any time.

It's your move Washington, and the stakes couldn't possibly be higher...

Israeli Jets Stiff-Armed And Routed By Russian Jets As They Try To Enter Syrian Airspace..

Posted By: Watchman

Date: Sunday, 4-Oct-2015 13:23:24

Maybe the zionists will just go bomb Gaza again to poove their manhood...

EXCLUSIVE-Strategika 51: Six Russian fighter jets type Multirole Sukhoi SU - 30 SM have intercepted 4 Israeli McDonnell Douglas F-15's fighter bombers attempting to infiltrate the Syrian coast. The Israeli F 15 warplanes have been flying over Syrian airspace for months and in particular the coast of Latakia, which is now the bridgehead of the Russian forces in Syria.

The Israeli jets would generally follow a fairly complex flight plan and approach Latakia from the sea

On the night of 1 October 02, 2015, six Sukhoi SU-30 Russian SM fighters took off from the Syrian Hmimim airbase in the direction of Cyprus, before changing course and intercepting the four Israeli F-15 fighters off the coast of Syria, that were flying in attack formation.

Surprised by a situation as unexpected and probably not prepared for a dogfight with one of the best Russian multipurpose fighters, Israeli pilots have quickly turned back South at high speed over the Lebanon.

The Lebanese army has officially announced at 2313 Z (local time) that four "enemy aircraft" (Israeli) had crossed the airspace of the Lebanon.

This 'incident' between the Russian and Israeli combat aircraft struck with amazement the command of the Israeli air force, which has estimated that a possible dogfight between F-15 Israelis and the Russian Su-30 would have led to the destruction of the four aircraft Israelis.

Israel has strongly protested to Moscow of the incident but the Russians demanded explanations about the presence of Israeli military aircraft in full Syrian airspace.

This incident indicates that the protection of Syrian airspace is now under the protection of the Russian air weapon. What causes gnashing of teeth in Washington.

The incident has been ignored by major news agencies but relays political and media of Israel in the United States, Europe and in the Arab world will redouble their efforts to demonize the Russian support for the Syrian Government.

you made my day jessica, was only saying to breezy I am waiting to hear of the Russians downing an Israeli aircraft when being caught on one of their covert raids into Syrian airspace and if downed the matching of armaments would be undeniable with huge repercussions internationally.

Bet there are a few Israeli pilots feeling nervous about future flights, nothing like the hunter becoming the hunted

Israeli pilots are not the only ones to see their hopes dashed. Enjoy the deafening silence that their big boss Bibi had to face at the UN:

Where are the standing ovations that Bibi get's after his epochal speeches (in US congress)?

So let's forget about the video above and let's instead talk about Russia's isolation in the world community ;).

Western Media Can Rest: Russia Will Bomb ‘Moderate Rebels’ Moderately

The Russian Ministry of Defense has explained that it will follow the fair approach in Syria.

As a Western journalist concerned that Russia is bombing the liberal opposition in Syria, I called the Russian Ministry of Defense to specify the Russian Air Forces’ approach. A secretary put me through to a Russian officer who politely explained to me the Russian attitude:

“The Russian Federation made a responsible decision to follow the principles of law and differences in the Syrian military operation. Thus, all our weapons were divided into 2 categories: common and moderate. We use the common weapons against the common terrorists. Against moderate terrorists, we use only the moderate weapons. Our aviators carefully follow these instructions. So, you can be sure that we took into account the terrorists’ level of moderation.”

After these words, I felt much better. BUT as a real unbiased journalist I asked again, just to be sure: “Do you really use only moderate weapons against the moderate terrorists. Is that true?”

The interlocutor answered:

“An officer’s words!”

My concerns about the situation disappeared immediately, and I decided to clarify the situation. I asked: “How do your moderate weapons differ from common weapons?”

“Our common weapons differ from moderate weapons as common terrorists differ from moderate terrorists. They have different colors. Moderate weapons’ colors are lighter and moderate.” the officer said and hanged up the phone.

End of ISIS? Putin sends in his most ruthless special forces killers SPETSNAZ to finish off jihadis

Posted By: RumorMail [send E-Mail]

Date: Wednesday, 7-Oct-2015 14:13:26

VLADIMIR Putin has dispatched his most elite special forces team to Syria to hunt down and wipe out Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

A battalion of elite paratroopers also ghosted into the war-torn country this week as Putin ramps up his assault on the Islamist fanatics and rebel forces fighting to topple dictator Bashar al-Assad.

The deployment of the Spetsnaz - the elite of the elite in Russia's army who have to undergo a gruelling training programme to earn their stripes - is the latest example of the megalomaniac leader's ruthless determination to shore up the rule of his close ally.

It is especially significant because many of the men have a deep hatred of jihadis from their time fighting in Chechnya's bloody civil war, when Islamist fanatics battling for independence carried out frequent atrocities against Russian citizens.

Amongst the world's most efficient killers, they will now be tasked with mercilessly hunting down and slaying ISIS fighters and are also expected to play a role rooting out terrorist strongholds to be targeted by Russian bombers.

The move comes after it emerged that Putin is set to send 150,000 troops to Syria to wipe out the evil hate group once and for all.

His jets have waged a merciless bombing campaign against the jihadis in recent weeks, blitzing more than 50 facilities including a key command centre and a suicide belt factory.

A military source told the Mirror: “They are extremely aggressive and highly trained.

Syria in Last 24 Hours: Over 1,000 Militants Surrender to Army in Daraa

Posted By: RumorMail [send E-Mail]

Date: Wednesday, 7-Oct-2015 14:16:22

In Response To: End of ISIS? Putin sends in his most ruthless special forces killers SPETSNAZ to finish off jihadis (RumorMail)

Hundreds of foreign-backed militants surrendered to the government troops in the province of Daraa, Syria's National Reconciliation Committee announced on Monday.

Over 1,000 terrorists laid down arms and surrendered to the Syrian authorities over the past 24 hours in Daraa, the Syrian local sources also confirmed.

The militants also turned over their cache of ammos to the authorities, both sources added.

The development came after President Bashar al-Assad in a televised address in July pardoned all soldiers who have fled the army, saying that his words served as a general decree to relevant officials.

Hundreds of gunmen have been laying down their weapons and turning themselves in to authorities in areas across the country.

This number seems to be on the rise as the army has been making steady gains in the battlefield against the terrorist groups, recapturing an increasing number of regions, including strategic sites, which helped cut off many of the militants' supply routes and forced them to surrender or run away.

Also in the past 24 hours, the Syrian air raids destroyed concentration centers of the ISIL, al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups in Hama and Idlib.

The Syrian warplanes conducted airstrikes against positions of ISIL and the so-called Jeish al-Fath terrorists in the countryside of Hama and Idlib.

The airstrikes hit positions of the ISIL terrorists in al-Rahjan village, 50 km to the Northeast of Hama City, destroying a number of terrorists' vehicles with all arms, ammunition and equipment on board.

The airstrikes also hit positions of al-Nusra Front and other terrorist groups in Aqrab village in the Southwestern countryside of Hama, killing scores of terrorists.

A number of vehicles belonging to Jeish al-Fath terrorists were also destroyed in airstrikes in Abdin village in the countryside of Ma’aret al-Nu’aman in Idlib countryside.

Meantime, the Syrian fighter jets pounded hideouts of the Takfiri militants in the countryside of Homs.

The Syrian air raids destroyed Takfiri terrorists' hideouts and vehicles in al-Qaryatain, al-Sa’an, and in the vicinity of al-Sha’er field in Homs countryside.

The Russian air group in Syria is using Kh-29L air-to-surface missiles to conduct airstrikes against the ISIL militants, the Russian military said Sunday.

"A Kh-29L surface-to-air missile is equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system. When the launch is conducted, a pilot illuminates a target with a laser sight. At the same time an aircraft can continue the flight," Aerospace Forces Spokesman Colonel Igor Klimov said.

Also, the Syrian army conducted military operations against the foreign-backed Takfiri militants in Aleppo province, leaving hundreds of them killed and injured.

Hundreds of terrorists were killed or wounded in Aleppo City and its countryside in the past 24 hours, a military source said.

Elsewhere, at least 28 militant fighters of the ISIL terrorist group were killed during clashes with the Kurdish forces in the Northeastern Syrian province of Hasaka.

“The YPG forces besieged the ISIL militants near Mount Abdulaziz and killed dozens of terrorists and destroyed several vehicles,” a spokesman for the YPG Media Center told ARA News.

Also, gunmen from the Jeish al-Fath coalition of extremist groups are pulling out their forces from Idlib and other towns in Northwestern Syria.

Hmmm... Spetsnaz, I wonder if it is just dis-information, to try to show Russia is the baddie...  This was predicted, to then give NATO a handle to get into the Ukraine.

But then, during the British campaign in the Falklands, they let on the Gurka's were landing. Just that very name caused many of Argentinian troops to surrender.

Panic among jihadists 'Take down your flags and run, all of you'

Date: Friday, 9-Oct-2015 05:48:45

Supreme Commander is yelling: "East, west and south ... Four aircraft. Leave the base, leave positions as soon as possible. ''

Published: 09/10/2015 | 08:28

Hassan Haidar Diab

Russian military intelligence intercepted and recorded a conversation between members of ISIL Headquarters in Syria which reflected the panic and fear. Supreme Commander was yelling: "East, west and south ... Four aircraft. Leave the bases, leave positions as soon as possible. Leave everything, and arms and ammunition."

"It is dangerous. Our three hundred targets have already been hit.

Everybody listen up. Here's aircraft. Where are you? Come in." "I see four Russian aircraft. When they are finished with strikes, transfer weapons. Find warehouse that is deeper than 15 meters so the projectiles can not penetrate it. Be sure that tanks, armored vehicles and guns every day move to another location and do not use them except in an emergency because they record ... they all record. "

"Turn off all cell phones and do not use them and do not even talk on the walkie-talkie with the main commanders who are on the front lines."

"The most important thing, from all positions and facilities remove the flag of the Islamic state. When you remove the flags, leave the bases and positions on the entire territory of the Caliphate."

"My brothers, my brothers, do not be afraid .... we will win, we will destroy Bashar Al-Assad, the Russian army will be destroyed in Syria, and Putin's end will be in our hands in the name of Allah, if Allah allows it."

Obama Administration Ends Pentagon Program to Train Syrian Rebels

The Obama administration has ended the Pentagon’s $500 million program to train and equip Syrian rebels, administration officials said on Friday, in an acknowledgment that the beleaguered program had failed to produce any kind of ground combat forces capable of taking on the Islamic State in Syria.

Pentagon officials were expected to officially announce the end of the program on Friday, as Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter leaves London after meetings with his British counterpart, Michael Fallon, about the continuing wars in Syria and Iraq.

In Response To: Notice the date: Putin Orders Massive Strike Against Saudi Arabia If West Attacks Syria -Aug 27, 2013 (RumorMail)

The head of the Defense Minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is coming to Moscow for an official visit on Sunday, October 11, the Kommersant newspaper reports citing a source at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia. According to the newspaper, the prince is scheduled to meet Russian President Putin in Sochi, where he will also attend Russia's Formula 1 Grand Prix race. This will be Mohammed Bin Salman's second visit to Russia this year, Pravda.Ru reports.

Also read: Obama wants Saudi Arabia to destroy Russian economy

The visit of the Saudi official to Moscow against the backdrop of Russia's anti-terrorist operation in Syria, which Saudi Arabia remains vehemently opposed to, may indicate Riyadh's willingness to compromise with Moscow. Saudi Arabia hopes to change Moscow's attitude towards the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, promising strategic partnership and multi-billion-dollar projects.

Noteworthy, Saudi Arabia remains one of the most ardent opponents to Bashar al-Assad.

Earlier, Saudi Minister for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir announced the existence of only two solutions to the Syrian conflict. It is not ruled out, though, that Saudi Arabia may mitigate its stance on Syria and improve ties with the Russian Federation, experts believe.

As Russia Bombs Syria, Obama Pulls US Aircraft Carrier Out of Persian Gulf

by Courtney Kube and Erik Ortiz

As Russian warships rain down cruise missiles as part of its military strike in Syria, there's now a glaring absence in the region: For the first time since 2007, the U.S. Navy has no aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.

Military officials said Thursday that they've pulled the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is home to about 5,000 service members and 65 combat planes, so that it can undergo maintenance. The ship officially exited the gulf around 11 p.m. ET. The temporary measure is also the result of mandatory budget cuts.

The lack of a U.S. presence in the gulf comes as Russia is escalating its actions in the region and began pounding targets in Syria last week with airstrikes. Russian officials say they're trying to obliterate ISIS, although the U.S. and its allies say they're instead hitting rebel fighters who oppose Syrian President Bashar Assad, a Russian ally.

Russia remains a wild card in the region — and the absence of an American aircraft carrier is being noticed, said Peter Daly, a retired Navy vice admiral and CEO of the U.S. Naval Institute.

"The most important thing you need a carrier for is for what you don't know is going to happen next," Daly told NBC News.

Really good synopsis of the situation..

Putin’s “Endgame” in Syria

By Mike Whitney

Russia doesn’t want to fight a war with Turkey, so Russian generals devised a simple, but effective plan to discourage Turkey from taking any action that could lead to a clash between the two nations.

Last week, Russian warplanes intruded into Turkish airspace twice. Both incidents caused consternation in Ankara and send Turkish leaders into a furor. On both occasions, officials in Moscow politely apologized for the incursions claiming they were unintentional (“navigational errors”) and that they would try to avoid similar intrusions in the future.

Then there was a third incident, a more serious incident, that was not a mistake. It was clearly intended to send a message to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Here’s a short summary of what happened from an article at the World Socialist Web Site:

“Turkish officials claimed a third incident on Monday, when an unidentified MiG-29 fighter jet locked its radar for four and a half minutes on eight Turkish F-16 jets that were on patrol on their side of the border, in apparent preparation to open fire.” (“US, NATO step up threats to Russia over Syria“, World Socialist Web Site)

This was no mistake. The only time a fighter pilot adopts these protocols is when he plans to take down an enemy plane. This was a message, and while it might have been over-the-heads of the politicians and the media but, I assure you, every general in the Turkish High-Command knows what’s it means. This is a wake-up call. Moscow is indicating that there’s a new sheriff in town and that Turkey had better behave itself or there’s going to be trouble. There’s not going to be any US-Turkey no-fly zone over North Syria, there’s not going to be any aerial attacks on Syrian sites from the Turkish side of the border, and there certainly is not going to be any ground invasion of Turkish troops into Syria. The Russian Aerospace Defence Forces now control the skies over Syria and they are determined to defend Syria’s sovereign borders. That’s the message. Period.

This is a good example of how “preemption” can actually prevent conflicts rather than starting them. By firing a shot over Turkey’s bow, Moscow has dampened Erdogan’s plan to annex part of N. Syria and declare it a “safe zone”. Turkey will have to scrap that plan now realizing that any attempt to seize-and-hold Syrian territory will trigger a swift and powerful Russian retaliation. Seen in this light, Russia’s incursion looks like an extremely effective way to prevent a broader war by simply telegraphing to potential adversaries what they can and can’t do. Simply put: Putin has rewritten the rules of the game in Syria and Erdogan had better comply or else. Here’s more on Turkey from Patrick Cockburn in The Independent:

US: The World's Silliest Empire - It would be humorous if people weren't dying because of it

Originally appeared at Club Orlov

I couldn't help but notice that over the past few weeks the Empire has become extremely silly—so silly that I believe it deserves the title of the World's Silliest Empire. One could claim that it has been silly before, but recent developments seem to signal a quantum leap in its silliness level.

The first bit of extreme silliness surfaced when Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III, the head of the United States Central Command, told a Senate panel that only a very small number of Syrian fighters trained by the United States remained in the fight—perhaps as few as five.

The tab for training and equipping them was $500 million. That's $100 million per fighter, but that's OK, because it's all good as long as the military contractors are getting paid. Things got even sillier when it later turned out that even these few fighters got car-jacked by ISIS/al Qaeda in Syria (whatever they are currently calling themselves) and got their vehicles and weapons taken away from them.

"The aircraft delivery includes small arms ammunition to resupply counter-ISIL ground forces so that they can continue operations against ISIL. All aircraft exited the drop area safely," he said in a statement. All pallets successfully were recovered by friendly forces, a U.S. official said.

Yes, “friendly forces.”

Just let the hilarity of that sink in.

The US just paradropped 50 tons of ammo on pallets into the most dangerous place on the face of the planet with no way of ensuring that it falls into the "right" hands (it goes without saying that the term "right" is meaningless there). Meanwhile, the Russians are dropping bombs on the same extremists who are set to receive the guns the US is dropping.

Of course if it does somehow fall into the “wrong” hands, it wouldn’t be the first time (see Mosul and recall the $500 billion worth of weapons Washington “misplaced” in Yemen) and as we said a few days ago, this is at least great news for the military-industrial complex. It means more "terrorist attacks" on U.S. "friends and allies", and perhaps even on U.S. soil - all courtesy of the US government supplying the weapons - are imminent.

Of course they are "friendly" - wouldn't you be, just being given free and new supplies of food, weapons and ammo???

Manna from Heaven, regardless who you are, and who you are fighting...
