A train carrying crude oil derailed and crashed in downtown Lynchburg, Va., leading to evacuations in the immediate downtown area as it was seen billowing with extreme smoke and fire.

At this time the city says no injuries have been reported from the explosive crash around 2 p.m. EST near The Depot Grille which reportedly dumped crude oil in the James River.

Lynchburg police and fire personnel are actively at the scene while advising residents to stay out of the downtown area. City officials also say that the city's drinking water has not been affected by the spill

I thought of you, breezy, when I saw this earlier and they said it was crude oil. And when I saw it was a downtown derailment.

Seoul Subway Trains Crash, Causing Minor Injuries

May 2, 2014

"SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A subway train hit another train stopped at a station in South Korea's capital on Friday, causing minor injuries for scores of people, a city official said.

Yonhap news agency reported that the moving train ran into the back of a train that had stopped because of mechanical problems. The agency reported that a failure in the moving train's automatic distance control system may have been responsible, but that officials were still investigating.

Local media also reported long delays in officials providing instructions to passengers about what to do. That could strike a nerve in South Korea, where the captain in an April 16 ferry sinking that killed hundreds of people has been condemned for waiting 30 minutes to issue an evacuation order as the ship sank."

We received our little local, once a week newspaper today, and one of the bolded headlines was this "Third Train off The Rails"

We have had 3 train derailments in a 20 mile stretch, since April 29th.  One on April 29, one on May 9, and one on May 15th. The railroad officials state "we have never seen anything like this before".  So far they are saying it's due to a failure of the railroad ties, but management is on the way and they will get to the bottom of it. OK then, what would cause those ties to fail? Is the earth moving under our feet, maybe?  This is one time I can't give you a link, but will attempt to take a picture and upload it.

This is not what I consider a cruise liner, but it is an oil tanker, so I will put the story here, it could go on other threads, but here we won't lose track of the incident.

Oil tanker sinks off Japan after huge explosion     AFP

"Tokyo (AFP) - An oil tanker sank off the Japanese coast on Thursday after a large explosion and subsequent fire sent towering columns of acrid smoke into the sky.

The 64-year-old captain of the ship was still unaccounted for nearly 12 hours after the accident, while four of his crew were in hospital being treated for severe burns, the local coastguard said.

The vessel's boatswain, 61, remained unconscious with burns covering his entire body, it added.

The nearly 1,000-tonne tanker had unloaded its cargo of crude oil last week and was stationary off the coast of Hyogo prefecture, around 450 kilometres (280 miles) west of Tokyo, when the explosion happened at about 9:20 am (0020 GMT).

Throughout the day the vessel listed ever more extremely, and sank beneath the waves in the early evening, the coastguard said.

Akihiro Komura, an official from Syoho Shipping, the Hiroshima-based shipping firm that owns the vessel, confirmed that seven of the eight Japanese crew were rescued, including those injured."

Huh??  :wtf:  What kind of exercise needs to be done with a civilian craft and two military jets? Whatever it was, looks like they have to go back to square 1.

Aircraft crashes after hitting fighter jet

Published: 23 Jun 2014 16:15 GMT+02:00
Updated: 23 Jun 2014 16:15 GMT+02:00

UPDATE: A German Eurofighter jet collided with a manned light aircraft causing it to crash land on Monday afternoon. A third jet was also at the scene.

Two people were feared dead after their light aircraft collided with a Eurofighter jet during an exercise they were both taking part in over central Germany on Monday, officials said.

The pilot and passenger aboard the military-chartered Learjet were missing after their small plane crashed in a hilly rural area close to several homes and burst into flames.

The accident happened around 1240 GMT in the Olsberg-Elpe district of North Rhine-Westphalia state, about 420 kilometres southwest of Berlin.

The German military jet and a second Eurofighter taking part in the exercise were able to land afterwards at an air base near Cologne.

Rain on a Plane: Leak Forces Flight's Turnaround

Los Angeles  July 2, 2014

"Water flowed down the aisles and rained down on passengers of a double-decker Qantas Airways flight bound for Australia after a leak that forced the plane to return to Los Angeles late Tuesday, airline officials and passengers on the flight said.

The flight to Melbourne landed safely again at Los Angeles International Airport about an hour after takeoff, the company said in a statement.

Qantas said there were no safety concerns with the leak and that the captain decided to turn the Airbus A380 around in the interest of passenger comfort.

Water ran down stairs in the cabin and dripped onto passengers seated in the lower deck. Some people were moved to dryer areas of the plane.

"You couldn't keep going like that for 15 hours," passenger Ken Cross told KABC-TV."

Terror-filled flight as plane’s engine fails over Atlantic

"Passengers have told how their flight on a Boeing 787 “Dreamliner” plane ended up turning into a nightmare.

There were 288 travelers on board the Thomson Airways flight from the Dominican Republic to Manchester, UK, when it suffered an engine problem over the Atlantic.

British holiday-makers Gary Barton and his wife, Caroline, who were traveling with their daughter, said they noticed a change in the engine noise about an hour-and-a-half into the trip. They claim the plane then began to drop.

“We could see on our screens that our altitude was dropping about 500 feet (152 meters) every minute,” Mrs. Barton told the Manchester Evening News. “The captain said he had to fly lower because he only had one engine. It looked like we were just dropping into the Atlantic.”

Unresponsive US jet crashes off north coast of Jamaica

September 5, 2014

"A light jet en route from Rochester, New York to Naples, Florida has reportedly crashed just north of the island of Jamaica Friday afternoon nearly four-and-a-half hours after the aircraft’s pilot first became unresponsive.

The Associated Press reported at around 2:30 pm EDT on Friday that the plane had crashed near the island with three on board, according to local officials. NBC News said the jet went down 14 miles north of Jamaica.

Two American fighter jets and a Cuban military aircraft were sent to intercept the small aircraft late Friday morning, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, acknowledged earlier in the day.

According to a statement published by NORAD, the bi-national Canadian and American command that is responsible for the air defense of North America and maritime warning, jets were deployed to investigate the aircraft after the plane failed to respond to communications. CNN reported that three people, including the pilot, were on the plane, according to the Pentagon."

It does look like the pilot might have had a mechanical issue. He had asked twice to descend from 28,000 ft to 18,000 ft. He was only initially given clearance to go to 25,000 ft. Then he was given clearance to go to 20,000 ft, but he never did respond to that.  :(

Passengers' terror as cabin walls CRACKED and plane shook violently, forcing emergency landing on American Airlines flight

Interior panels on both sides of the cabin pulled apart from the walls

American Airlines flight was heading to Dallas from San Francisco  <<<<<<I find this interesting indeed!!

Passenger James Wilson says passenger screamed for flight attendants

Captain decided to turn around after inspecting the damage himself

Airline spokesman says blown air duct investigated as possible cause

An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing when its cabin walls began to break apart as terrified passengers looked on.

Flyer James Wilson said travellers on Monday's flight from San Francisco to Dallas knew something was wrong when they felt the fuselage begin to shake violently and heard popping noises outside the Boeing 757 shortly after take-off.

Astonished travellers feared the plane would crash as interior panels on both sides of the cabin pulled apart from the walls, exposing insulation, and they felt a change in cabin pressure due to a possible blown air duct."

October 13, 2014

Boeing 767 was en route to Dalaman, Turkey from Manchester

Passengers say the pilot announced that plane had a 'technical fault'

Plane circled over Peak District National Park to burn off fuel

"Holidaymakers went through some tense moments on Monday morning when a Thomas Cook plane made an emergency landing after passengers say it began ‘creaking like mad’ due to a technical fault.

The pilot was forced to abort the four-hour journey to Dalaman, Turkey, and return to Manchester Airport shortly after the Boeing 767 took off around 7.15am.

A Thomas Cook spokesman said the plane, carrying 278 passengers, turned around as a precaution because it suffered an unexpected hydraulic fault on one of three systems on board."

CEO of France's Total dies in jet crash at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport

The CEO of France’s oil and gas giant Total, Christophe de Margerie, was reportedly among four people killed in a business jet crash at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow after the aircraft hit a snowplow on take-off.

Total’s chairman and CEO was the only passenger in the Falcon 50 business jet besides three crewmembers who were also French citizens.

“Total confirms with deep regret and great sadness that Chairman and CEO Christophe de Margerie died just after 10pm (Paris time) on October 20 in a private plane crash at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow, following a collision with a snow removal machine,” the company said in a statement.

There seem to have been a lot of changes to the Total CEO crash story from the intial reports I read.  I will post them here before more of them are cleared up as time goes on. It's difficult to find evidence of the initial reports anymore.

What I heard for several hours after the crash was that there were 5 dead-- 4 from the plane and one other, assumed to be the snow plow driver. Now the snow plow driver is accused of being drunk and seems to be walking around without a scratch.

While initials reports suggested only four people died in the tragedy, some sources claimed that five bodies were found at the crash site, one allegedly being the driver of the snowplow. The airport however later confirmed that the driver was not injured in the collision.

Here is another discrepancy as to whether the plane actually took off or not.

The aircraft did not leave the ground after hitting the vehicle, she added, refuting earlier reports that the plane did eventually take off but then the pilot made a decision to turn back and land. The investigators have already found the aircraft’s black boxes while the airport staff were writing explanatory reports, she added.

News portal LifeNews.ru reported earlier that the plane was in the air for a short period of time, sending distress signals and reporting an engine fire and fuselage damage, before it crashed on the runway, becoming engulfed in flames and killing everyone on board.

Debris from the aircraft was scattered up to 200 meters from the crash site, according to the rescue services. The engine was found some 50 meters from the crash site, while one of the landing gears was ripped off and discovered nearly 200 meters from the main mass of debris.

Here is a comment (made today) from a reader in Shawn's article: "Weird, yesterday I read that the plane had to make an emergency landing because one of the engines was on fire and the pilot radioed for an emergency landing, when it landed, it collided with a snow removal vehicle... Now it says the plane struck a snow removal vehicle BEFORE take off. Something fishy here."

And another: "I remember when the first report came out, it said that the snow vehicle driver was killed in the accident. Now he is alive and drunk?? Hmmmmmmm something fishy going on.....At the end, what about those reports that said 5 people died?? Let see how this story develops......."

It is so difficult not to jump to conclusions here. This is the guy who's plane crash is discussed above. He made his comment back in July.

Also, an interesting comment from the article below by one of the readers, made back in July:  "Also someone take a life insurance policy on that guy I have a feeling Langley mercenaries will make someone rich."  Seems the reader was prescient.

Total’s de Margerie Sees No Need for Dollars in Oil Purchases

By Mark Deen Jul 5, 2014 9:38 AM ET

Total SA (FP) Chief Executive Christophe de Margerie said he sees no reason for oil purchases to be made in dollars, adding that it makes sense to expand the use of other currencies in transactions outside the U.S.

“Nothing prevents anyone from paying for oil in euros,” de Margerie told journalists at the Cercle des Economistes conference in Aix-en-Provence, France. “The price of a barrel of oil is quoted in dollars. A refinery can take that price and using the euro-dollar exchange rate on any given day, agree to make the payment in euros.”

The shift in focus comes after Mr Martynenkov's attorney, Alexander Karabanov, told TV Rain there was no way his client could have been drunk at the wheel.

'My client has a long-lasting heart disease, he does not drink at all,' he said. 'It can be confirmed by both his relatives and the doctors.'

The oil boss had been in Moscow for a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at his country residence outside Moscow to discuss foreign investment in Russia.

More than 20 dead after TransAsia flight clips bridge in Taiwan

[This video has footage of the plane coming down, taken from two different webcams]

UPDATED: 12:40 p.m. GMT / 7:40 a.m. EST

A Taiwanese turboprop plane with 58 people aboard clipped a bridge shortly after takeoff from Taipei on Wednesday, killing more than 20 people as it plunged sideways into a river.

The number of fatalities from TransAsia Flight 235, which had 53 passengers and five crew members aboard, is expected to rise as teams of rescue workers in rafts attend the scene close to shore on the Keelung River.

Dashcam footage has emerged showing the moments before the plane crashed. The footage shows the ATR 72-600 prop-jet aircraft flying on its side, with one wing scraping past Taiwan's busy National Freeway No. 1 just seconds before it careened into the river.

The crash occurred after takeoff from Taipei's Songshan Airport at 10:54 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

The plane's wing also hit a taxi, the driver of which was injured, on the freeway just before it crashed into the river, Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS reported.

Not taking anything away from the sadness of the incident and looking at the picture of the taxi,I am wondering what sought of conversation that the driver is having trying to explain how his taxi was hit by an airliner while travelling along a freeway, mind blowing and surreal!!!

Cosmic, I had that thought too. Maybe collision coverage will pay out on that!

I also thought the taxi came through it pretty well. So, the VW really is a pretty tough vehicle.
