LOUISVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- The South Carolina Air National Guard says two F-16 fighter jet pilots ejected safely after a midair collision over eastern Georgia.

The crash site is known as the Townsend Bombing Range and is where South Carolina Air National Guard fighter jets routinely train for their electronic warfare and bombing missions.

Funny thing happened on the way to the forum to report this.  I had one on google that stated they ejected prior to the collision, but I had closed the page, when I saw kandescent had reported it first. So after reading her article, I see it says they survived a mid-air collision, then ejected.  Went back to retrieve article I was reading, and the wording changed.   hmmmm. Question, would they survive an actual collision?  Would they not try to avoid colliding in the first place?  Now I can't find one article that says they ejected before the crash, but this one that says they ejected after "an apparent" mid-air collision. Why am I thinking there is something strange about this story?

I thought the same thing, breezy. The only thing I can figure is that it probably wasn't a full blown collision. Maybe they just clipped each other.

The planes didn't even apparently fall in the same location. Earlier today, a local news outlet reported on a press conference held by Gen. Livingston and Col. Gentile commander of the 169th fighter wing. The general reported at that time that one of the planes had been found and asked the community for help finding parts to the other plane. But warned not to touch the parts if found in case they are hazardous. A bit later, they reported that the second plane had been found.

This article says the plane parts were found 2 miles from each other. http://www.airforcetimes.com/story/military/2016/06/08/air-national-guard-f-16-fighter-pilots-collide-over-georgia-eject-safely/85588370/

My guess is that they hit each other enough to cause the planes to be unable to fly, but not enough to cause an explosion. But who knows, it could just be poor reporting.

Interesting, kandescent, both Lt. Colonels, instructors,  and have been in combat, so not rookies, by any stretch.  Will be more interesting to see if we hear any more about it.

It seems 2 very lucky incidences  first one reported none of 300 passengers hurt, only one firefighter killed. When watching the video, it is hard to fathom. The second one, a collision avoided,  some very fortunate people today, indeed. Some pretty shaken, 2 crew treated, but still alive.

Major Train Accident in Hoboken, Injuries Reported

An NJ Transit train crashed into the station in Hoboken at the height of Thursday's morning rush, leaving twisted piles of metal and bricks as concern grew over the possibility of mass casualties and dozens of injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest the crash involving train No. 1614 on the Pascack Valley Line was an accident, according to two local law enforcement officials, though they stress it is early in the investigation.

Pictures on social media showed serious damage to the train station and extensive structural damage to the station. At least one of the NJ Transit cars appeared to be partially inside the building, with some of the supporting beams that hold up the canopy where the trains come in caved in around it.

This is BAD.....AND....a HACKED broadcast alert went out to a station in NY - legit - their facebook page admits:

MPORTANT NOTE - If you were watching our newscast around 6:17 p.m. you may have seen a "Hazardous Materials Warning" crawl across your screen. There is NO such warning. The message was an automated test which was not intended for public display. Again, there is NO warning. Our apologies for the confusion this may have caused.

Kicker is - "would you.could you.on a train" - that's what was scrawled...

Hoboken Train Crash Part of Drill Scheduled By NY/NJ Port Authority

Maybe they could be tied, but Hoboken and Bayonne are not the same terminals. Seems tenuous, at best, since one is train and other is boat terminal.

Five French nationals on surveillance mission to Libya dead in aircraft crash outside Malta runway

October 24, 2016

Matthew Vella / Miriam Dalli

"Turboprop aircraft crashed outside the Malta airport runway shortly after take-off at 7:30am • Flight was believed to be French Customs operation tracing human and drug trafficking routes • Remains of all five French nationals found

video_still_malta_plane_crash.png

A video still from an eyewitness video by Laurent Azzopardi/Facebook

"A small-engine aircraft has crashed in Safi after developing engine trouble the minute it took to air from the MIA runway, in a tragic accident that left five French nationals dead. Witnesses on site of the rescue described the scene as a pile of charred, black metal parts, owing to the scale of the explosion that ensued as the aircraft, a Fairchild Metroliner MkIII, crashed into the ground.

The Maltese government confirmed that the flight was part of a French Customs surveillance operation, which has been taking place for the past five months and tasked with tracing routes of illicit traficking of all sorts, including human trafficking and drug trafficking. But the French customs said in a tweet that it had none of its employees on board. Le Monde reported that three of the dead were secret service officers, while past reports link the CAE-leased aircraft to the EUNAVFOR Mediterranean mission.

The remains of all five French nationals have been found.

The government said that information, footage and eyewitness accounts, including those of three Armed Forces of Malta personnel at the nearby Safi barracks and two commercial airline pilots, clearly indicated there was no explosion prior to impact."

British Airways flight diverted to Vancouver after cabin crew becomes ill

A British Airways A380 aircraft on its way from San Francisco to London made an emergency landing in Vancouver late Monday after crew members became unwell, sending 25 to hospital.

Flight BA286, carrying about 400 passengers, was surrounded by emergency vehicles shortly after it touched down at Vancouver International Airport around 11:30 p.m. PT.

The plane was diverted over the Prairies to land in Vancouver.

Initial reports blamed the illnesses on smoke inhalation, but officials have yet to confirm this. It appears all of those hospitalized were cabin crew.

"The flight from San Francisco diverted to Vancouver after members of the cabin crew became unwell," said British Airways spokeswoman Michelle Kropf in New York. "We are investigating the cause of the problem."

'We just sat there in silence, being very British'

Passenger Steve Lowy told CBC News that about two hours into the flight the crews started quickly clearing away dinner.

"They suddenly cleared the trays away, and said that we were going to do a landing in Calgary due to the fact that there was a technical issue with the plane and a number of the cabin staff weren't feeling well."

Then the pilot announced that because the plane was an A380 — the largest commercial passenger jet in the world — it would be diverted to Vancouver instead, he said.

Seven people have died and dozens more have been injured after a tram overturned in London, police have said.

British Transport Police (BTP) arrested the driver but would not confirm why.

People were trapped inside and more than 50 were taken to hospital after the derailment in Croydon just after 06:00 GMT.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said the tram was travelling at a "significantly higher speed than is permitted".

Deputy Chief Constable Adrian Hanstock said: "After liaison with the coroner, we can confirm that at least seven people have lost their lives as a result of this incident.

"Our officers will continue to work tirelessly throughout the evening to formally identify them and provide care and support for their families."

India train: Rescuers end search for survivors at crash site

Rescue workers have called off the search for survivors in the wreckage of the train that derailed in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state, according to police.

At least 142 people died when the Indore-Patna Express came off the rails at 03:00 local time on Sunday (21:30 GMT Saturday), near the city of Kanpur.

The railway ministry has listed 180 of the more than 200 people injured.

The cause of the crash is unknown, but some reports point to a fractured rail.

Not all of the victims have been identified yet, leaving relatives to search for missing family members at nearby hospitals and at the crash site. At least 58 people are said to be in critical condition.

Train accidents are fairly common in India, where much of the rail infrastructure and rolling stock is out of date, but Sunday's crash was the deadliest in 14 years.

Hundreds took part in the rescue operation, using machines to cut through the mangled metal or using their bare hands to remove the debris, as police held back curious onlookers from nearby villages.

Two carriages were completely smashed up beyond recognition. Several other carriages were hanging off the tracks precariously.

Personal effects of passengers - bags, clothes, water bottles - were strewn all over the place. I saw a woman's red dress hanging off the roof of a carriage.

Two giant cranes tried to remove carriages that had already been cleared of bodies, but it proved difficult due to the heavy damage. I saw one carriage that was being lifted up suddenly fall to the ground - the crane could not handle it properly.

Late on Monday, rescue crews lifted the last of 14 wrecked cars from the tracks. No other bodies were found underneath the wreckage.

Zaki Ahmed, the police inspector general in Kanpur, confirmed the rescue operations were over.

A spokesman for the railway added: "The rail line has been cleared and some restoration work is on. The line will be fit for traffic in few hours from now."

The crash happened on one of India's busiest rail junctions. According to the Indian Express the carriages were outdated. The report said the government had promised earlier this year to upgrade all trains.

A railway spokesperson also noted the train had been carrying far more passengers that it was supposed to.

Although the official number of passengers on board was about 1,200, the Times of India said as many as another 500 could have been on the train without tickets, citing unnamed railway officials as sources.

Passengers, most of who were sleeping at the time of the crash, described horrific scenes.
