Even if you don't understand Spanish, her smile and laughter says it all. At the end, he tells her to make a wish and let the balloon go. She says, "I don't know what to wish for." He says, "Anything you want!" She releases the balloon and says, "Let everyone be happy!"

Blind dog finds her way home in depths of Alaskan winter

Dec. 26, 2012

Tim Walker

pg-26-alaska-dog-grapengete.jpgThe Grapengeter children with Abby the dog

"When their blind eight-year-old dog went missing from their remote Alaskan home in a heavy snowstorm, the Grapengeter family felt sure they'd never see her again.

snip

"Neighbours had planned to set live traps to find her, but in the end the dog found her own way along a winter trail to the house of Mark May, a local dog musher and vet. "Everybody just assumed it was some kind of scaredy cat, but... it was blind," May told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. "I guess [she found her way] by just sniffing." May found Abby's owners by disseminating her photograph and description on Facebook. She was recognised by one of the Grapengeters' neighbours, and returned home in time for Christmas Eve. McKenzie Grapengeter called it a Christmas miracle. "There's no other word to describe it," she told the News-Miner. "She's blind. It's amazing."

The coolest music in the world: Listen to Siberian ice drummers use frozen Lake Baikal as an incredible musical instrument

In minus 20C, they play one metre thick ice which has a distinctive sound

The 25 million year old lake is the deepest and oldest in the world

Released musical potential of ice when a member of the group fell on it

"A group of Siberian percussionists have become an internet hit with an exhibition of ice drumming on frozen Lake Baikal.

In minus 20C, they found by pure chance that the one metre thick ice has a distinctive and haunting rhythm all of its own, reported the Siberian Times.

'I felt like we were playing on the drums that Nature has left out for us, alone under the sun on the frozen waters of the world's most magnificent lake,' said Irkutsk architect Natalya Vlasevskaya, 31, a mother-of-one and organiser of Etnobit percussion group."

COOL! Listen and watch as the 'ice live sound' is created

This thread seems right for this I want to share.

It proofs that there is always a way and no one here on Earth should have to live in poverty or not be able to possess some basic things like a bicycle.

This guy invented bicycles that cost about 9-12$ to make. The prototype is maybe not the coolest looking bike ever but it is just a prototype. It can probably be worked out how to make more variables to fit everyone.

How about this Narnug.....ever heard of a 3D printer?  Why couldn't a bike be made using the material from one of those.???  They can make movable useable tools....don't know why they couldn't make bicycle parts....may not be 9/12 bucks  but hey...should work...and be strong enough for a human to ride...

Some good news for once:

An Indonesian judge by the name of Marzuki was sitting in judgment of an old lady who pleaded guilty of stealing some tapioca from a plantation.

In her defense, she admitted to the judge that she was indeed guilty of the crime because she was poor and her son was sick while her grandchild was hungry.

The plantation manager insisted that she be punished as a deterrent to others.

The judge going through the documents then looked up and said to the old lady, “I’m sorry but I cannot make any exception to the law and you must be punished.”

The old lady was fined Rp.1 million (USD 100) and if she could not pay the fine then she will be jailed for 2 and a half years as demanded by the law.

She wept as she could not pay the fine.

The judge then took off his hat and put in Rp. 1 million into the hat and said, “In the name of justice, I fine all who are in the court Rp.50 thousand (USD 5.50) as dwellers of this city for letting a child to starve until her grandmother has to steal to feed her grandchild. The registrar will now collect the fines from all present.”

The court managed to collect Rp 3.5 million (USD 350) whereby once the fine was paid off, the rest was given to the old lady … including the fine collected from the plantation manager.

Off the menu: 600 plump cats escape slaughter after China truck crash

Jan. 17, 2013

"Up to 600 plump white cats escaped death when the truck carrying them to be slaughtered crashed and they were rescued by animal rights activists in central China.

Volunteers hauled the cats from the overturned lorry in the central city of Changsha. Around one hundred felines, however, died in the accident while others escaped, says Xu Chenxin of the Changsha Small Animal Protection Association.

The cats, most of them plump and white, were heading to restaurants in the southern Guandong province, the China Daily reported.

“It was easy to tell they were meant to be eaten, from looking at the crates you could tell their owners didn’t care if they were alive or dead. When I arrived, the truck was piled high with more than 50 crates. The cats had travelled for days, without water or food, and the smell was dreadful” Xu told AFP on Monday."

China does not have laws to protect non-endangered animals such as cats and dogs. Although cats are not commonly served up as dinner in Chinese restaurants, some establishments, especially in the south, will put cat on the menu."

6,000 lbs of food on 1/10th acre - Urban Farm - Urban Homestead - Growing Your Own Food

FoodAbundance

Published on Mar 20, 2012

Over 6,000 pounds of food per year, on 1/10 acre located just 15 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. The Dervaes family grows over 400 species of plants, 4,300 pounds of vegetable food, 900 chicken and 1,000 duck eggs, 25 lbs of honey, plus seasonal fruits throughout the year.

From 1/10th of an acre, four people manage to get over 90% of their daily food and the family reports earnings of $20,000 per year (AFTER they eat from what is produced). This is done without the use of the expensive & destructive synthetic chemicals associated with industrial mono-cropping, while simultaneously improving the fertility and overall condition of the land being used to grow this food on. Scaled up to an acre, that would equal $200,000 per year!

To follow the Dervaes and their Urban Homesteading activites, you can find them at http://urbanhomestead.org

Urban and near-urban farming can be highly productive, causing whatever size of land you have to work with to produce with more abundance. It is time to solve hunger worldwide, through creating local food abundance.... Anyone can do it, once you learn how.

I posted this video to this thread because I believe it to be good news..it's from 2012, but heck if it can help someone learn how to survive, it's all good...Thanks Phillipbbg..very informative...

I suspect the community has made its feeling quite clear and adding more  BUREAUCRATIC process would be a grave mistake....

Surf’s Way Up: Garrett McNamara Claims to Ride Record Wave in Portugal

[/img]

To Mane—Barcroft Media/Landov

Jan. 28, 2013. U.S. surfer Garrett McNamara rides a wave off Praia do Norte beach in Nazare, Portugal. McNamara is said to have broken his own world record for the largest wave surfed when he caught this wave reported to be around 100ft, off the coast of Nazare. If the claims are verified, it will mean that McNamara, who was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts but whose family moved to Hawaii's North Shore when he was aged 11, has beaten his previous record, which was also set at Nazare, of 23.77 meters (78 feet) in November 2011.

Jane Burgermeister is back after a long absence with this article:

AUSTRIANS VOTE BY TWO THIRDS FOR DRAFT ARMY IN GROUND BREAKING REFERENDUM

*Austrians vote overwhelmingly to keep conscription in historic referendum and triumph for direct democracy

*Mainstream media propaganda machine suffers death blow as new style of political campaign emerges

*Politicians use internet to connect with grass roots, bypass corporate media

*Austria’s debt death spiral deepens: country facing 1930s financial crisis.

*The IMF’s „Chicago Plan“ to switch from private to public money supply should be the next referendum – and not just in Austria

..... But not just the result was a victory for Austria; the manner of achieving it was also a tour de force. It will hopefully herald a new era of genuine grass roots, information-based political campaigns free of the propaganda influence of the mainstream media.

Largely abandoning their traditional reliance on the corporate-controlled mainstream media, politicians transported facts and arguments directly to voters using the internet and old fashioned methods such as leafletting......

.... the mass circulation Krone newspaper failed to  persuade its own readers to vote for the professional army. Altogether, 56% of the Krone readers voted for conscription, evidently recognizing the Krone has about the same truth value as the Ministry of Truth described in George Orwell’s „1984? if not less.

.... The Social Democrats ” made a big misjudgement when they calculated nothing could go wrong as long as they had the support of the Krone and the yellow press,“ said public opinion expert Wolfgang Bachmayer in Der Standard.

„So many people voted against the media campaign,“ he said. „It’s a sign of media political maturity.“....

My 3 Cents 0n Cancer: Jack Andraka at TEDxSanJoseCAWomen

TedXtalks

"Published on Jan 15, 2013

"Jack is a fifteen year old freshman in high school. He developed a paper sensor that could detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer in five minutes for as little as 3 cents. He conducted his research at John Hopkins University. This research could change the face of cancer and promote early detection. He has been selected as the Intel 2012 ISEF winner and has won awards at multiple national and international math competitions. Jack is on the national junior whitewater kayaking team and enjoys playing with his dog and folding origami.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)"

You really want to watch this one...amazing and wonderful at the same time...enjoy
