The Climate Effects of High-Flying Bacteria

Ravaged by arid winds and ultraviolet rays, some bacteria not only survive in the upper atmosphere but might affect weather and climate, according to a study published on 28 January in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In one of the first attempts to explore atmospheric microbiology at high altitude, researchers analysed air samples from a six-week hurricane-research mission by NASA in 2010. A total of 314 different types of bacteria were collected in air masses around 10 kilometres above the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the continental United States. Although the scientists trapped only a small amount of material, bacteria accounted for around 20% of all particles — biological and non-biological — a higher proportion than in the near-Earth atmosphere.

“I’m really, really surprised at the high bacterial density at these high altitudes,” says Ulrich Karlson, an environmental microbiologist at Aarhus University in Denmark, who was not involved in the study. “This is clearly a harsh environment.”

“One of the next challenges is to figure out the role of these organisms,” says Konstantinos Konstantinidis, an environmental microbiologist at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and one of the study's authors.

Vengeance is first to receive new main static convertersBy Richard Scott

1/30/2013

Babcock has begun work to install a new electrical power conversion system on board the UK Royal Navy (RN) Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine HMS Vengeance during the boat's current Long Overhaul Period (Refuel) (LOP[R]) at Devonport.

The first-of-class fit is part of an upgrade that will see the legacy motor generator plant on the four Vanguard-class boats replaced by new main static converters.

According to Babcock, the existing motor generators have a high maintenance requirement (being subject to wear-related issues and performance degradation during operation) that can impact on submarine availability. The new static converters, which provide a fixed, solid state power electronics alternative that avoids the need for rotating machinery, offer much improved reliability and considerably reduced through-life maintenance requirements. This will in turn improve submarine availability to perform the at-sea deterrence role.

Babcock and the Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) In-Service Submarines team have been working together on the project since January 2009; the main static converters themselves are a derivative of the system originally designed by Ultra Electronics PMES for the RN's new Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.

Uncontrolled gas flow continues from well in Gulf of Mexico — Trying to stop it from moving underground

Feb 20, 2013

"Fuel Fix, Feb. 19, 2013: Drilling specialists have been pumping heavy fluids into a gas well 50 miles off the Louisiana coast in a bid to halt natural gas moving among underground formations at the site. The intervention is taking place roughly two weeks after workers detected a kick, or uncontrolled flow of fluid, at the Apache Corp. well on Feb. 4. [...] tests detected the hydrocarbon had migrated from the bottom of the 8,300-foot hole to a shallower sand formation 1,100 feet below the sea floor. [...] The company had contracted with the well control specialists at Boots & Coots, a Halliburton company, to try and kill the well [...] “With BSEE oversight, Apache Corp. has been pumping drilling fluids into the well to stop the underground flow,” the agency said in a statement. [...]

AHN, Feb. 19, 2013: In an attempt to block natural gas movements from underground formations at the site, drilling specialists on Tuesday decided to intervene by pumping heavy fluids into Gulf of Mexico’s gas well. The decision came nearly two weeks after workers discovered an uncontrolled flow of fluid at one of the Houston-based Apache Corp’s wells. [...]

“[We're] continuing our efforts to control the migration of gas in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. [... Apache's] continuing to plan for a relief well, if that becomes necessary” -Apache spokesman John Roper."

Deepest undersea vents discovered by UK team

Feb 21, 2013

By David Shukman

Science editor, BBC News

_65995831_65988020.jpg

UK scientists exploring the ocean floor in the Caribbean have discovered an "astounding" set of hydrothermal vents, the deepest anywhere in the world.

Deploying a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) in the Cayman Trough, they stumbled across a previously-unknown site nearly 5000m below the surface.

Video pictures relayed live back to the research ship mounting the operation show spindly chimneys up to 10m high.

They are belching out dark water - "a stunning sight", one scientist said."

snip

"The water being blasted from the newly-found vents was measured at 401C, making this set among the hottest on the planet.

The expedition, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, is being run from a British research ship, the James Cook, named after the 18th century explorer who blazed a trail of discovery around the Pacific.

Now the ship bearing his name is using the latest technology to open up and understand an underwater world of eerie landscapes and unusual life forms.

A live stream of video is relayed back to a control room on board - where a cheer went up when the ROV's lights and high definition cameras picked out the new vents amid total darkness.

The team had been looking for a set first identified a year ago but their search took them unexpectedly into an entirely new field."

snip

"For the biologists on board, the vents act as a highly unusual habitat with a massive contrast between the water from the vents measuring just over 400C, compared to the surrounding sea temperature of around 4C.

The narrow interface between the two extremes of water - sometimes as narrow as a few centimetres - provides a unique environment for an array of creatures."

snip

"The scientists on the James Cook hope the research will eventually answer two key questions: why and how life evolved in such a seemingly hostile environment."

I am reminded of our bezerk organism, and how life can survive even in the most extreme circumstances..

"Dirty Bilizzard" in Gulf may Account for Missing Deepwater Horizon Oil

JIll Elish March 19, 2013

"Oil from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill acted as a catalyst for plankton and other surface materials to clump together and fall to the sea floor in a massive sedimentation event that researchers are calling a “dirty blizzard.”

Jeff Chanton, the John Widmer Winchester Professor of Oceanography in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science at Florida State University, is one of the members of the Deep-C Consortium who presented the dirty blizzard hypothesis at a recent conference in New Orleans that focused on the effects of the oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem.

The consortium, which includes researchers from FSU, Eckerd College, the University of South Florida and Georgia Institute of Technology, confirmed the never before observed dirty blizzard hypothesis by using thorium, lead and radiocarbon isotopes in addition to DNA analyses of sediments.

The dirty blizzard phenomenon may explain what happened to some portion of the more than 200 million gallons of spilled oil. Microbes likely processed most of the oil within months of the spill, but government assessments have not accounted for all of the spilled oil."

What BP Doesn’t Want You to Know About the 2010 Gulf Spill

April 22, 2013

The 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill was even worse than BP wanted us to know.

""It’s as safe as Dawn dishwashing liquid.” That’s what Jamie Griffin says the BP man told her about the smelly, rainbow-streaked gunk coating the floor of the “floating hotel” where Griffin was feeding hundreds of cleanup workers during the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently, the workers were tracking the gunk inside on their boots. Griffin, as chief cook and maid, was trying to clean it. But even boiling water didn’t work."

1366353304692.cached.jpg

An agonizing 87 days passed before the BP oil spill was finally sealed off. According to US government estimates, 210 million gallons of Louisiana sweet crude had escaped into the Gulf, making this disaster the largest unintentional oil leak in world history. (Benjamin Lowy/Getty)

“The BP representative said, ‘Jamie, just mop it like you’d mop any other dirty floor,’” Griffin recalls in her Louisiana drawl.

It was the opening weeks of what everyone, echoing President Barack Obama, was calling “the worst environmental disaster in American history.” At 9:45 p.m. local time on April 20, 2010, a fiery explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig had killed 11 workers and injured 17. One mile underwater, the Macondo well had blown apart, unleashing a gusher of oil into the gulf. At risk were fishing areas that supplied one third of the seafood consumed in the U.S., beaches from Texas to Florida that drew billions of dollars’ worth of tourism to local economies, and Obama’s chances of reelection. Republicans were blaming him for mishandling the disaster, his poll numbers were falling, even his 11-year-old daughter was demanding, “Daddy, did you plug the hole yet?”

Griffin did as she was told: “I tried Pine-Sol, bleach, I even tried Dawn on those floors.” As she scrubbed, the mix of cleanser and gunk occasionally splashed onto her arms and face.

Read this horror story...and to think it's as though it never happened, and continues to impact the whole gulf and the states bordering it...

I have some really big news coming up concerning the Great Wall in the Antarctic!

It is related to these new stations being built by China. I have to double check the facts and the person relaying this information. MORE SOON as Nex Ed would say

China says it plans to create two new scientific research stations in Antarctica and have them operational by 2015.

An expedition team is conducting inspections of possible sites, China's State Oceanic Administration said.

One of the new stations will be a summer facility that can be used from December to March, and will be set up between the existing Zhongshan and Kunlun Stations, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The two existing stations would provide replenishment and other logistical support for the new site, officials said. It will be used to study geology, glaciers, geomagnetism and atmospheric science in Antarctica, the SOA said.

A year-round station will be built in Victoria Land in Antarctica by 2015 to allow researchers to carry out research on bio-ecology and satellite remote sensing, officials said.

China's three existing Antarctica research stations are the Zhongshan and Kunlun stations and the Great Wall station.

edit to modify

look this is what i have but really it's too soon to sound horns OK?

All I know for sure, well not for sure, all I know is what I’ve been told by someone in the government here loosely attached to the Operation Deep freeze at Christchurch Airport. It’s all on and by next Antarctic summer most stations will have new tracking devices.  Because according to some, a leak of information from the Chinese Base at the great wall suggests signals which having been coming in for some time (years maybe) have intensified and are now almost continuous. I don’t know what that means and either does the source of the information at this time. I’m just checking out this guy as best I can before I maybe spread this info wider.

Given the Chinese 'source connection', I'm thinking these are the same signals that were activating/programming the 'organism' in the oil, which thus caused the 'splash zones'; and/or the same signal broadcast before and during the opening of the infamous time-locked Chinese briefcases.

Aco, what thinkest thou?

On the authentication side of things this is what I have. The guy that has leaked this and wants to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, is the same guy that leaked that the Raytheon Scientist? that was evacuated from MacMurdo base a year or two ago because of some contagious disease. Raytheon refused to name their employee because, I believe, you would then have been able to trace which department in Raytheon he worked for. (they, have most employees listed in the departments they work for on the web site if you care go take a look.

We are told Raytheon are only in the Antarctic for logistic purposes, but I think we all know they are there for far more sinister reasons than that. Anyway this guy leaked that story long before it made mainstream in a much more watered down version, so I’m presuming that he is a legitimate source of valid information, but still I’m trying to look more deeply into the source because I know it’s so important to Chani researchers.

A small section of that event (2010 I think)

Update, 9:50 a.m. EDT, Tuesday, Sept. 14: The Orion plane was able to land at McMurdo's landing strip, refuel and evacuate the man, who was said to have a serious medical condition, the Associated Press reported. The man was flown back to New Zealand and taken to Christchurch Hospital.

A rescue plane is in the air en route to McMurdo Station in Antarctica in an effort to evacuate an American crew member from the U.S. research station, LiveScience has learned. The man is said to be in serious but stable condition. Officials have not said if he is ill or injured.

The exact condition of the sick man was not divulged due to privacy issues, Colston said, though he confirmed that the man was a support crew member that works for the company Raytheon, which has a support contract with McMurdo.

And then it happened again last year (2012)A sick American scientist is in a Christchurch hospital after an Australian medical team mounted a successful winter rescue mission to Antarctica.

The Australian Antarctic Division's Airbus A319 landed on an icy runway at the US-run McMurdo research station on Ross Island and evacuated the scientist after an hour on the ground.

Temperatures hit -25C at McMurdo but conditions otherwise were described as "perfect" for the jet to land at the base after a five-hour flight from Christchurch.

The plane arrived back in Christchurch on Thursday night.

"The mission was successful and the patient is now in hospital in New Zealand," Australian Antarctic Division spokeswoman Patty Lucas said.

The patient's illness has not been disclosed.

The Royal New Zealand Air Force provided search and rescue coverage for the flight.

Latest news

From the scant info I have concerning the positioning or rebuilding of tracking stations in the far south, the beam or signal has a very narrow band you have to be almost right under it to retrieve it, and it has moved or split it’s signals of late from one side of the Antarctic to the other, which is why they need to reposition the intercept weapons, yes you heard right, intercept weapons. And guess where the ‘in the know’ people are betting the new station is going to be. Right close to the American McMurdo Base! In a place called the Labyrinth of all names.

So it seems to be seeking out a target or targets which is obviously positioned in Antarctica, now your guess is as good as mine, are they (China) trying to prevent the signal from connecting to carrier or target?  If China is attempting to intercept, who’s side are they on? And is there a side to be ‘ON’

More info when or if I get any.

:o well it seems that the splash zones are creating a symptomatic exposure complex, and it makes sense that the organism is being activated by signals from oh let me guess -leviathan folk- five 'll get you ten the guy has another modification of the ( flesh eating) disease and wont last the month... This is why folks we absolutely must abjectly nullify our use of petroleum for any kind of use and move into clean renewable resonance field energy- or similar. The organism which resides in the oil is being activated all over the globe in tar sands and everywhere it is being pumped- talk about Terraforming. Second hand information again!

Our Eye in Christchurch has noticed packing crates arriving from Europe with O/Ikarus stenciled on them but they are all going to the deep freeze storage areas. (American)

O/Ikarus? Operation Ikarus?

Other crates have arrived from the USA from VPT with markings suggesting DC-DC power converters and EMI Filters all radiation Hardened according to packaging. I have been told these can be used in space!! WTF, are they building a space ship down there!

Italy also has storage space at Christchurch I am told.  Their building is filling up also.

DERIVATIVES

Icarian adjective

Daedalus |?di?d?l?s|Greek Mythology

a craftsman, considered the inventor of carpentry, who is said to have built the labyrinth for Minos, king of Crete. Minos imprisoned him and his son Icarus, but they escaped using wings which Daedalus made and fastened with wax. Icarus, however, flew too near the sun and was killed.

Düsseldorf-Hafen

Rhine Tower

Media Harbour Düsseldorf ; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:D%C3%BCsseldorf_Stadtteil_Hafen.svg

map of Düsseldorf, showing Hafen (in red) within District 3 (in pink)

Düsseldorf-Hafen means the harbour of Düsseldorf. More than that, Hafen is the name of the Düsseldorf district in which the harbour is located.

The borough covers 3.85 km2, but there were only 212 inhabitants in the year 2000. With 55 inhabitants per km², this is the thinnest density of population in Düsseldorf.

For decades the harbour has been an area of workers, industry and trade. But after the Mannesmann company had discontinued its tube production in Düsseldorf, parts of the central harbour lost their reason for being (another harbour is in Düsseldorf-Reisholz). As a result the eastern part of the harbour started to be redeveloped.

Mainly third sector businesses were attracted to move to the Hafen: media companies, but also fashion and design offices. One of the first new residents to the so-called Media Harbour was Westdeutscher Rundfunk with its current affairs TV and radio studios. There is also Düsseldorf's local radio station, Antenne Düsseldorf, in the harbour. CNN used to have an office there. One of the largest cinemas of Düsseldorf is in the Hafen. The Landtag (State parliament) of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Rheinturm are situated right next to the harbour.

The Hafen district itself contains some spectacular post-modern architecture, most famously three twisted constructions by Frank Gehry. Other than that there are many restaurants, bars, and a few clubs, which make the Hafen a prominent lifestyle district. But one of its main attractions, the beach bar "Monkey's Island", had to close for the sake of one further newly planned upscale hotel.

The western part of the harbour is still industrially used, but there are plans for further redevelopment with the construction of high end apartment buildings.

In 2003 the port company merged with the port of Neuss on the opposite bank of the Rhine to form Neuss-Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH & Co. KG.

The term hamburger originally derives from Hamburg,[2] Germany's second largest city, from which many people emigrated to the United States. In High German, Burg means fortified settlement or fortified refuge; and is a widespread component of place names. Hamburger can be a descriptive noun in German, referring to someone from Hamburg (compare London ? Londoner) or an adjective describing something from Hamburg. Similarly, frankfurter and wiener, names for other meat-based foods, are also used in Germany and Austria as descriptive nouns for people and as adjectives for things from the cities of Frankfurt and Wien (Vienna), respectively. The term "burger" is associated with many different types of sandwiches similar to a (ground meat) hamburger, using different meats, such as a buffalo burger, venison, kangaroo, turkey, elk, lamb, salmon burger or veggie burger.[3]
