NASA just launched a new satellite that will be installed on the International Space Station to study rare high energy bursts that have been coming from earth. This is a VERY cool experiment and I have more in this article courtesy of NASA... NASA’s Firestation on way to the International Space Station http://fox41blogs.typepad.com/.a/6a0148c78b79ee970c019104981150970c-500wi In August 2013, NASA’s Firestation instrument will be mounted to the International Space Station to help study lightning, as seen here in an image captured in January 2011 from the space station while over Brazil, and its relationship to huge gamma ray bursts called terrestrial gamma ray flashes. Image Credit: ESA/NASA "An experiment to study the effects of lightning flashes on Earth's atmosphere hitched a ride to the International Space Station on Aug. 3, 2013. The Firestation experiment launched aboard a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s transfer vehicle called Kounotori-4. Firestation will be installed robotically to the outside of the space station, a process that will take about three weeks." http://fox41blogs.typepad.com/.a/6a0148c78b79ee970c0192ac618bfa970d-500wi Some 50 strokes of lightning occur on Earth every second.
