  1. Bizarre Rogue 'Planet' with Incredible Auroras Puzzles Scientists August 6, 2018 Meghan Bartels An artist's depiction of the newly described object. Credit: Chuck Carter; NRAO/AUI/NSF/Caltech "A rogue, planet-size object 20 light-years away from Earth has stunned astronomers with its incredibly powerful magnetic field. The scientists found that the object's magnetic field is more than 200 times stronger than Jupiter's, which, in turn, is between 16 and 54 times stronger than Earth's, according to NASA. How the object, which scientists call SIMP J01365663+0933473, can maintain a magnetic field so strong, as well as generate spectacular auroras, is still unclear. "This particular object is exciting because studying its magnetic dynamo mechanisms can give us new insights on how the same type of mechanisms can operate in extrasolar planets — planets beyond our solar system," lead study author Melodie Kao, an astrophysicist at Arizona State University, said in a statement from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory published Aug. 2. [The Strangest Alien Planets We Know in Pictures] https://public.nrao.edu/news/planetary-mass-powerhouse/ https://www.space.com/159-strangest-alien-planets.html And it's not just the magnetic mechanism that's leaving scientists with questions right now — there are plenty of other mysteries about the object, which scientists first discovered in 2016. The object is what scientists call a brown dwarf. Nicknamed "failed stars," brown dwarfs are larger than planets, but not quite large enough to fuse hydrogen, the way stars do. The boundary line is still debated, but scientists tend to draw it at about 13 times the mass of Jupiter. Originally, scientists thought SIMP J01365663+0933473 was a gigantic, old brown dwarf. But further study showed that it is instead relatively young, at 200 million years old, and is only 12.7 times the mass of Jupiter. That research also showed that the planet is on its own, not orbiting a star. "This object is right at the boundary between a planet and a brown dwarf, or 'failed star,' and is giving us some surprises that can potentially help us understand magnetic processes on both stars and planets," Kao said in the statement. "We think these mechanisms can work not only in brown dwarfs, but also in both gas giant and terrestrial planets." The team is particularly excited by the new research because it relies in part on radio observations of the object's auroras — which means that radio telescopes may be able to identify new planets by their auroras." https://www.space.com/41390-rogue-brown-dwarf-auroras-magnetic-field.html One thing I can't get, they're saying 20 light years from Earth, but Mars is not 20 light years from Earth. The video below shows it being between the two. Cosmic Dreamer posted the following video on shout thread. Please watch and listen to what is said. In the following video they talk about "Blue". I believe "Blue" is that planet several of us were watching, over Turialba, in Costa Rica, several years ago and posted many pictures of, here on CHANI, on Neo's planetary thread. 2. August 13, 2013 Barbara Hollingsworth CNSNews.com) – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released its “State of the Climate in 2012” report, which states that “worldwide, 2012 was among the 10 warmest years on record.” But the report “fails to mention [2012] was one of the coolest of the decade, and thus confirms the cooling trend,” according to an analysis by climate blogger Pierre Gosselin. “To no one’s surprise, the report gives the reader the impression that warming is galloping ahead out of control,” writes Gosselin. “But their data shows just the opposite.” Although the NOAA report noted that in 2012, “the Arctic continues to warm” with “sea ice reaching record lows,” it also stated that the Antarctica sea ice “reached a record high of 7.51 million square miles” on Sept. 26, 2012. http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/what-global-warming-2012-data-confirms-earth-cooling-trend#sthash.3ixGIcvt.dpuf
  3. Asymmetric molecule, key to life, detected in space for first time Irene Klotz June 14, 2016 A depiction of the complex organic molecule propylene oxide is seen over a background image of the center of the Milky Way galaxy in an undated composite image provided by the U.S. National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Scientists said on Tuesday they detected propylene oxide near the center of our Galaxy in Sagittarius. B. Saxton, NRAO/AUI/NSF from data provided by N.E. Kassim, Naval Research Laboratory, Sloan Digital Sky Survey/Handout via Reuters "CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) - Scientists for the first time have found a complex organic molecule in space that bears the same asymmetric structure as molecules that are key to life on Earth. The researchers said on Tuesday they detected the complex organic molecule called propylene oxide in a giant cloud of gas and dust near the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Akin to a pair of human hands, certain organic molecules including propylene oxide possess mirror-like versions of themselves, a chemical property called chirality. Scientists have long pondered why living things make use of only one version of certain molecules, such as the "right-handed" form of the sugar ribose, which is the backbone of DNA. The discovery of propylene oxide in space boosts theories that chirality has cosmic origins. "It is a pioneering leap forward in our understanding of how prebiotic molecules are made in the universe and the effects they may have on the origins of life," chemist Brett McGuire of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia said in a statement. These types of molecules, vital for biology, previously have been discovered in meteorites on Earth and in comets in our own solar system but never before in the enormous expanse of interstellar space. snip https://ca.news.yahoo.com/asymmetric-molecule-key-life-detected-space-1st-time-181645512.html
  4. Surprise! Newfound Asteroid Is 'Quasi-Moon' of Earth June 16, 2016 Mike Wall video at link "It seems the moon is not Earth's only cosmic companion. The newly discovered asteroid 2016 HO3 orbits the sun in such a way that the space rock never strays too far from Earth, making it a "quasi-satellite" of our planet, scientists say. "One other asteroid — 2003 YN107 — followed a similar orbital pattern for a while over 10 years ago, but it has since departed our vicinity," Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement Wednesday (June 15). snip "This new asteroid is much more locked onto us," Chodas added. "Our calculations indicate 2016 HO3 has been a stable quasi-satellite of Earth for almost a century, and it will continue to follow this pattern as Earth's companion for centuries to come." Indeed, 2016 HO3 is the best example of an Earth quasi-satellite ever found, scientists said. The asteroid was discovered on April 27 by scientists using the Pan-STARRS 1 survey telescope in Hawaii. 2016 HO3's exact size is unknown, but researchers think it's between 130 feet and 330 feet wide (40 to 100 meters). snip http://www.space.com/33185-earth-quasi-moon-asteroid-2016-ho3.html

  7. The Water in Your Glass Might Be Older Than the Sun April 15, 2016 NIcolas St.Fleur The water you drink is older than the planet you’re standing on. CreditBiwa Studio/Getty Images "Earth is old. The sun is old. But do you know what may be even older than both? Water. It’s a mystery how the world became awash in it. But one prevailing theory says that water originated on our planet from ice specks floating in a cosmic cloud before our sun was set ablaze, more than 4.6 billion years ago. As much as half of all the water on Earth may have come from that interstellar gas according to astrophysicists’ calculations. That means the same liquid we drink and that fills the oceans may be millions of years older than the solar system itself. The thinking goes that some of the ancient ice survived the solar system’s chaotic creation and came to Earth. To demonstrate that, researchers analyzed water molecules in oceans for indicators of their ancient past. The clue comes in the form of something known as “heavy water.” Water, as you know, is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. But some water molecules contain hydrogen’s chunky twin, deuterium. (It contains a neutron in its nucleus, whereas regular hydrogen does not.) Deuterium-rich water is found on other planets and moons, even here on Earth, but researchers are not sure where it came from. One idea is that much of the heavy water formed in the interstellar cloud and then traveled across the solar system." snip http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/16/science/the-water-in-your-glass-might-be-older-than-the-sun.html?_r=4
  8. Physicists isolate neutrinos from Earth's mantle for first time August 14, 2015 Hannah Johnston Seeing the light: some of Borexino's many light detectors "The first confirmed sightings of antineutrinos produced by radioactive decay in the Earth's mantle have been made by researchers at the Borexino detector in Italy. While such "geoneutrinos" have been detected before, it is the first time that physicists can say with confidence that about half of the antineutrinos they measured came from the Earth's mantle, with the rest coming from the crust. The Borexino team has also been able to make a new calculation of how much heat is produced in the Earth by radioactive decay, finding it to be greater than previously thought. The researchers say that in the future, the experiment should be able to measure the quantities of radioactive elements in the mantle as well. According to the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) model, most of the radioactive uranium, thorium and potassium in our planet's interior lies in the crust and mantle. Accounting for about 84% of our planet's total volume, the mantle is the large rocky layer sandwiched between the crust and the Earth's core. Heat flows from the interior of the Earth into space at a rate of about 47 TW, but one of the big mysteries of geophysics is how much of this heat is left over from when the Earth formed, and how much comes from the radioactive decay chains of uranium-238, thorium-232 and potassium-40. Peering deep underground. One way to settle the question is to measure the antineutrinos produced by these decay chains. These tiny particles travel easily through the Earth, which means that detectors located near the surface could give geophysicists a way of measuring the abundance of radioactive elements deep within the Earth – and thus the heat produced deep underground. Back in 2005 physicists working on the KamLAND neutrino detector in Japan announced that they had detected 22 geoneutrinos, while Borexino, which has been running since 2007, reported in 2010 that it had seen 10 such particles. Both detectors have since spotted more geoneutrinos and, taken together, their measurements suggest that about one half of the heat flowing out of the Earth is generated by radioactive decay, although there is large uncertainty in this value. Italian adventure The Borexino detector is made up of 300 tonnes of an organic liquid, and is located deep beneath a mountain at Italy's Gran Sasso National Laboratory to shield the experiment from unwanted cosmic rays that would otherwise drown out the neutrino signal. Whenever electrons in the liquid are struck by an antineutrino, they recoil and create a flash of light. In the latest work, Borexino physicists have analysed a total of 77 detector events, with the team calculating – using data from the International Atomic Energy Agency – that about 53 of these antineutrinos were produced by nuclear reactors. The remaining 24 geoneutrinos could have come from either the Earth's crust or its core. However, scientists have a pretty good idea of how much uranium and thorium are in the crust, allowing the Borexino physicists to say that half of these geoneutrinos were produced in the mantle and the other half in the crust. Furthermore, the physicists can say with 98% confidence that they have detected mantle neutrinos – a much greater level of confidence than achieved in previous studies. snip http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/2015/aug/14/physicists-isolate-neutrinos-from-earths-mantle-for-first-time Spectroscopy of geoneutrinos from 2056 days of Borexino data journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.92.031101 Age of the neutrino: Plans to decipher mysterious particle take shape Elizabeth Gibney August 12, 2015 A graphical guide to four giant experiments spread across the world. "As researchers at CERN, Europe’s particle-physics laboratory near Geneva, dream of super-high-energy colliders to explore the Higgs boson, their counterparts in other parts of the world are pivoting towards a different subatomic entity: the neutrino. Neutrinos are more abundant than any particle other than photons, yet they interact so weakly with other matter that every second, more than 100 billion stream — mainly unnoticed — through every square centimetre of Earth. Once thought to be massless, they in fact have a minuscule mass and can change type as they travel, a bizarre and entirely unexpected feature that physicists do not fully understand (see ‘An unconventional particle’). Indeed, surprisingly little is known about the neutrino. “These are the most ubiquitous matter particles in the Universe that we know of, and probably the most mysterious,” says Nigel Lockyer, director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois." 9. New study maps Earth's hidden groundwater for the first time November 17, 2015 Chris Wood A new study estimates a total volume of almost 23 million cubic kilometers of total groundwater (Credit: University of Victoria/T Gleeson/K Befus/S Jasechko/E Luijendijk/M Cardenas) "A new study has, for the first time, estimated the total volume of groundwater present on the Earth. The results show that we're using up the water supply quicker than it can be naturally replaced, while future research will seek to determine exactly how long it will be until modern groundwater runs dry. Groundwater is an extremely precious resource, being a key source of sustenance for humanity and the ecosystems we inhabit. It resides beneath the Earth's surface, ranges from millions of years to just months old, and exists in huge quantities – quite literally millions of cubic kilometers. While calculations back in the 1970s roughly estimated the global volume of groundwater, this new study represents the first detailed calculation of the exact quantity, and it could have big implications. Researchers from the University of Victoria, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Calgary and the University of Göttingen created a map of groundwater distribution by carefully analyzing numerous datasets, and making use of more than 40,000 scientific models. In all, the study estimates a total volume of almost 23 million cubic kilometers (5.5 million cubic miles) of groundwater. Two kinds of groundwater were detailed – old and modern. Old groundwater is located deep in the Earth, is salty and often contains uranium or arsenic. In contrast, modern groundwater is closer to the surface, and moves more quickly. Unfortunately, it's also far more susceptible to climate change than the deeper, ancient water." snip http://www.gizmag.com/study-maps-earths-groundwater-first-time/40458/ Tx W
  10. 'Destructive Electrons Streaking Into Earth's Atmosphere at Near Light Speed' July 27, 2015 Press Trust of India Image: NASA "Potentially destructive high-energy electrons are streaking into Earth's atmosphere from space at velocities approaching the speed of light, scientists say.Researchers have now launched a project in Antarctica to record X-rays produced as falling electrons collide with the Earth's atmosphere. Particle onslaught can lead to ozone depletion and damage to the orbital satellites that provide us with the navigation, communication, weather and military-recognisance information upon which we have become dependent, researchers said. These satellites fly through the Van Allen radiation belts - giant concentric layers of charged particles held in place by the Earth's magnetic field. An increase in particle density and charge brought about by solar activity can raise the level of threat to our critical satellites. Scientists engaged in a unique study of this electronic bombardment, for the first time employing two distinctly different and distant vantage points high above the Earth. "This is exciting for us because we are integrating data collected by our instruments with the data from Nasa's Van Allen Probes," said Robyn Millan, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the Dartmouth College in US. Millan uses instruments carried aloft by balloons launched from Antarctica, rising as high as 125,000 feet. Supported by Nasa, the project is called BARREL, an acronym for Balloon Array for Radiation belt Relativistic Electron Losses. The instruments record the X-rays produced as the falling electrons collide with the atmosphere." snip http://gadgets.ndtv.com/science/news/destructive-electrons-streaking-into-earths-atmosphere-at-near-light-speed-720457 The study: Global-scale coherence modulation of radiation-belt electron loss from plasmaspheric hisshttp://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v523/n7559/full/nature14515.html A flare that took place in January of 2014 was mentioned, think it was this one NASA Releases Images of January Solar Flare January 7, 2014 NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which captures an image of the sun every 1.5 seconds, shows a mid-level solar flare at the center of the sun on Jan. 7, 2014. Image Credit: NASA/SDO "The sun emitted a mid-level solar flare, peaking at 5:13 a.m. EST on Jan. 7, 2014. Images of the flare were captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and showed that it came from an active region on the sun that currently sports one of the largest sunspots seen in the last 10 years. Sunspots are regions of strong and complex magnetic fields on the sun's surface. Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. Launched in December of 2010 from McMurdo Station in Antarctica, the research balloon was a test run and it bobbed lower every day like it had some kind of leak. But every day for five days it rose back up in the sky to some 112,000 feet in the air. Robyn Millan arrived in Antarctica on Nov. 19, 2010 to launch test balloons for the BARREL project. Credits: Henry Cathey Down on Earth, physicist Robyn Millan was cheering it on, hoping the test launch would bode well for the success of her grand idea: launches in 2013 and 2014 of 20 such balloons to float in the circular wind patterns above the South Pole. Each balloon will help track electrons from space that get swept up in Earth's magnetic field and slide down into our atmosphere. Such electrons are an integral part of the turbulent magnetic space weather system that extends from the sun to Earth. A professor at Dartmouth College, Millan is the principal investigator for a project called BARREL, or Balloon Array for RBSP Relativistic Electron Losses. Millan's proposal will work hand in hand with NASA's Radiation Belt Space Probes (RBSP) mission, two NASA spacecraft due to launch in 2012 to study a mysterious part of Earth's magnetic environs called the Van Allen radiation belts. The radiation belts are made up of two regions, each one a gigantic donut of protons and electrons that surrounds Earth. "We're both looking at the loss of particles from the radiation belts," says Millan. "RBSP sits in space near the equatorial plane and looks at the particles along magnetic field lines there. These particles come into our atmosphere – following magnetic field lines to their base at the Poles – and produce X-rays. BARREL measures those X-rays. Together we can combine measurements of the same set of particles." snip http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sunearth/news/barrel-antarctica.html
  11. Earth’s sixth mass extinction has begun, new study confirms June 19, 2015 James Dyke "We are currently witnessing the start of a mass extinction event the likes of which have not been seen on Earth for at least 65 million years. This is the alarming finding of a new study published in the journal Science Advances. The research was designed to determine how human actions over the past 500 years have affected the extinction rates of vertebrates: mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians. It found a clear signal of elevated species loss which has markedly accelerated over the past couple of hundred years, such that life on Earth is embarking on its sixth greatest extinction event in its 3.5 billion year history. This latest research was conducted by an international team lead by Gerardo Ceballos of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Measuring extinction rates is notoriously hard. Recently I reported on some of the fiendishly clever ways such rates have been estimated. These studies are producing profoundly worrying results. However, there is always the risk that such work overestimates modern extinction rates because they need to make a number of assumptions given the very limited data available. Ceballos and his team wanted to put a floor on these numbers, to establish extinction rates for species that were very conservative, with the understanding that whatever the rate of species lost has actually been, it could not be any lower. This makes their findings even more significant because even with such conservative estimates they find extinction rates are much, much higher than the background rate of extinction – the rate of species loss in the absence of any human impacts. Here again, they err on the side of caution. A number of studies have attempted to estimate the background rate of extinction. These have produced upper values of about one out of every million species being lost each year. Using recent work by co-author Anthony Barnosky, they effectively double this background rate and so assume that two out of every million species will disappear through natural causes each year. This should mean that differences between the background and human driven extinction rates will be smaller. But they find that the magnitude of more recent extinctions is so great as to effectively swamp any natural processes." snip http://theconversation.com/earths-sixth-mass-extinction-has-begun-new-study-confirms-43432
  12. I guess I am very skeptical these days. I wanted to post this to see what y'all think. I'll tell you my thoughts. 1. I cannot tell if this is a "real" representation or not. 2. If it is Earth, then I don't recognize the land masses-- but that could be from the angle/perspective-- I'm not sure. 3. Why is the glowing bit of the atmosphere in rainbow colors? It used to be blue (when they have shown us so-called pictures of the earth), except in very concentrated places when there are geomagnetic storms. 4. Around about 0:27 or so, there is a cut and the vantage point changes. What is the white light in the upper right? 5. I would like to see a real-time video rather than these time-lapsed videos-- just me maybe. This video makes me . 14. Moon rocks hint at planet Theia that once crashed into Earth Material from Mars-sized 'Theia' makes up half of moon, study suggests Thomson Reuters June 5, 2014 The researchers analyzed both old lunar samples, in the form of meteorites that fell to Earth from the moon, and newer ones collected during the Apollo missions. The newer ones showed a chemical signature that could belong to Theia. (Courtesy of Addi Bischoff, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster) "Lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo astronauts more than 40 years ago contain evidence of a Mars-sized planet that scientists believe crashed into Earth and created the moon, new research shows. German scientists using a new technique said they detected a slight chemical difference between Earth rocks and moon rocks. Scientists said more study would be needed to confirm this long-elusive piece of evidence that material from another body besides Earth contributed to the moon's formation some 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists believe the moon formed from a cloud of debris launched into space after the young earth collided with a Mars-sized body called Theia. Different planets in the solar system have slightly different chemical makeups. Therefore, scientists believed moon rocks might hold telltale chemical fingerprints of whatever body smashed into Earth. If you put all the water on Earth in one place it would look like this: Here is another image which also does the same thing with earth’s atmosphere. Again a surprisingly tiny ball. Think about that next time you let rip with a fart. An image that shows what it would look like if you put all the *fresh* water on Earth in one place: Drinkable water really is our most precious resource. 16. Tiny Crystal Is Oldest Known Piece of Earth, Scientists Say February 23, 2014 "Scientists using two different age-determining techniques have shown that a tiny zircon crystal found on a sheep ranch in western Australia is the oldest known piece of our planet, dating to 4.4 billion years ago. Writing in the journal Nature Geoscience on Sunday, the researchers said the discovery indicates that Earth's crust formed relatively soon after the planet formed and that the little gem was a remnant of it. John Valley, a University of Wisconsin geoscience professor who led the research, said the findings suggest that the early Earth was not as harsh a place as many scientists have thought. A 4.4 billion-year-old zircon crystal from the Jack Hills region of Australia has been confirmed to be the oldest bit of the Earth's crust. snip http://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/tiny-crystal-oldest-known-piece-earth-scientists-say-n36916
  17. I am going to post two videos that Robert gave me this morning. In the first video the Russian Cosmonaut talks about an energy wave going to hit the sun, (at just about 11 min in) the video is from January of 2013. Our entity talked about this. The second video talks about a ball of energy headed towards the earth. and it's from January 12, 2014. Not saying there's a connection with what our entity said, about this, but will admit I am sure wondering. Apparently the title on this video is wrong, and it's actually Pane Andov talking in the video. From the 2011 LeeCountyFlorida Jan. 27, 2013 Now this one from January 12, 2014 about a ball of energy coming towards earth. 18. Earth’s Most Stunning Natural Fractal Patterns Jess McNally Romanesco Broccoli This variant form of cauliflower is the ultimate fractal vegetable. Its pattern is a natural representation of the Fibonacci or golden spiral, a logarithmic spiral where every quarter turn is farther from the origin by a factor of phi, the golden ratio. Ammonite SuturesExtinct for 65 million years, ammonites were marine cephalopods that built chambered spiral shells. The walls between these chambers, called sutures, were complex fractal curves. Stephen Jay Gould used the complexity of ammonite sutures over time to argue that there is no evolutionary drive toward greater complexity and that we are a "glorious accident," alone in the universe. SnowflakesCrystallizing water forms repeating patterns in snowflakes and on frosty surfaces. The patterns have inspired claims about the power of consciousness to affect matter, as well as one of the first described fractal curves, the Koch snowflake. There are many more very pleasing and beautiful pictures of earth's fractals to see, here... http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/09/fractal-patterns-in-nature/?pid=164
  19. Sept. 20, 2013 According to new research from UK and Swiss scientists, the core of our planet is more complicated than we thought, with layers rotating in different directions, and it all may solve a mystery about the Earth's magnetic field that's persisted for over 300 years. The Earth's core is separated into two different layers. At the centre is the solid inner core, which is surrounded by the liquid outer core — both made up of a mixture of nickel and iron. Scientists figured out the structure of the two layers decades ago, based on watching seismic waves from earthquakes passing through the planet, and they also discovered that it is circulations in the hot, liquid metal of the outer core that generate the Earth's magnetic field. There are some things about the core that have remained a mystery, though. A study from 2005 revealed that, although the inner core rotates in the same direction as the surface, it actually rotates slightly faster than the surface. That strange result joins another curious finding, from back in 1692, when astronomer Edmond Halley (of Halley's Comet fame) discovered that the Earth's magnetic field 'drifts' towards the west by a few degrees every decade. A new study has finally offered an explanation for these two mysteries, tying everything together at last.
