  1. New Quantum Liquid Crystals May Play Role in Future of Computers April 20, 2017 Caltech Whitney Clovin These images show light patterns generated by a rhenium-based crystal using a laser method called optical second-harmonic rotational anisotropy. At left, the pattern comes from the atomic lattice of the crystal. At right, the crystal has become a 3-D quantum liquid crystal, showing a drastic departure from the pattern due to the atomic lattice alone. "Physicists at the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter at Caltech have discovered the first three-dimensional quantum liquid crystal—a new state of matter that may have applications in ultrafast quantum computers of the future. "We have detected the existence of a fundamentally new state of matter that can be regarded as a quantum analog of a liquid crystal," says Caltech assistant professor of physics David Hsieh, principal investigator on a new study describing the findings in the April 21 issue of Science. "There are numerous classes of such quantum liquid crystals that can, in principle, exist; therefore, our finding is likely the tip of an iceberg." Liquid crystals fall somewhere in between a liquid and a solid: they are made up of molecules that flow around freely as if they were a liquid but are all oriented in the same direction, as in a solid. Liquid crystals can be found in nature, such as in biological cell membranes. Alternatively, they can be made artificially—such as those found in the liquid crystal displays commonly used in watches, smartphones, televisions, and other items that have display screens. In a "quantum" liquid crystal, electrons behave like the molecules in classical liquid crystals. That is, the electrons move around freely yet have a preferred direction of flow. The first-ever quantum liquid crystal was discovered in 1999 by Caltech's Jim Eisenstein, the Frank J. Roshek Professor of Physics and Applied Physics. Eisenstein's quantum liquid crystal was two-dimensional, meaning that it was confined to a single plane inside the host material—an artificially grown gallium-arsenide-based metal. Such 2-D quantum liquid crystals have since been found in several more materials including high-temperature superconductors. These are materials that conduct electricity with zero resistance at around –150 degrees Celsius, which is warmer than operating temperatures for traditional superconductors. John Harter, a postdoctoral scholar in the Hsieh lab and lead author of the new study, explains how 2-D quantum liquid crystals behave in strange ways. "Electrons living in this flatland collectively decide to flow preferentially along the x-axis rather than the y-axis even though there's nothing to distinguish one direction from the other," he says." read more at http://www.caltech.edu/news/new-quantum-liquid-crystals-may-play-role-future-computers-54788 http://authors.library.caltech.edu/76787/
  2. New Zealand space launch has nation reaching for the stars May 21, 2017 Courtesy: ABC news "WELLINGTON – New Zealand has never had a space program but could soon be launching commercial rockets more often than the United States. If the plans of the California-based company Rocket Lab work out. Founded by New Zealander Peter Beck, the company was last week given official approval to conduct three test launches from a remote peninsula in the South Pacific nation. Rocket Lab is planning the first launch of its Electron rocket sometime from Monday, depending on conditions. “So far, it’s only superpowers that have gone into space,” said Simon Bridges, New Zealand’s economic development minister. “For us to do it, and be in the first couple of handfuls of countries in the world, is pretty impressive.” Rocket Lab sees an emerging market in delivering lots of small devices, some not much bigger than a smartphone, into low Earth orbit. The satellites would be used for everything from monitoring crops to providing internet service." snip http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2017/05/21/asia-pacific/science-health-asia-pacific/new-zealand-space-launch-nation-reaching-stars/#.WSHq-esrL3g

  4. This is the opening track for this thread [Travel where the Moon Pulls by Tom Adams] THE GREATER PICTURE If we don't change, you know we're lost. To change the world, is not a matter of changing the outer systems, types of societies, religions or politics. We've done that for millenia erasing entire systems, killing, fighting, destroying, to set up new ones in hope of abundance and happiness. We've switched from an ancient society to the present, from one type of civilization to the following, or from one type of government to another. We were slaves freed from slavery. Are we now free? There were changes, of course but were they successful? fruitful? Are we now happier, living in peace and harmony? Do we live in security, in a healthy body, on a healthy planet? Have all these changes brought about the full realization of human life and the human race? To change the world, we need to make deep changes and prepare. What shall we do? Fight against an 'ennemy' who is far superior, so deeply infused in societal structures that it has become impossible to unthread their fabric? promote and further the concept of war and engage in ground and space or galactic conflicts? Thus keeping Humanity under its spell? 2 are available right now: the X-wave (which we don't have control upon) and our mind (which we do). It is the only 'thing' we can have total control upon. (even if we're beamed). So we can reflect upon the former and work on the later. Let's try to change our mental structures, the way we think, the way we look at things, to learn to control instinct, emotions and bring a dynamic equilibrium in our life. One possible way of doing so is to see things from a distance, or change slightly our angle of perception, get a bigger picture and change our perspective. We not only need to change Humanity's 'position' in space/time and look at it from a different point of view -from space or even from the edges of the universe toward itself- but also use a 'quantum eye'. Let's look at Planet Earth as if looking at a sphere floating in space, let's look at it from above and below and from all sides to see what we don't see as we're 'glued' to it and let's look at Humans / ETs as diversified colonies of little tiny beings evolving on/in/out of it and managing it. And the 'quantum eye' is an eye that can see 1 and 0 simultaneously. Not only either 1 or 0. With this type of eye we can see the 'good' and the 'bad' simultaneously, not only one side. We can see the 'spiritual' and the 'material' simultaneously, not only on one side the spiritual and on the other the materialistic. Not only on one side 'peace' and on the other 'war'. We see them as a whole. The goal of this thread is to allow that perspective and ultimately reflect upon what human life is all about. ******************************************************** This first post will be updated again and again as we go along. You may come back to it anytime you would like to see if new questions have been added. When you'd like to add a question, please send me a message and I'll give it a number and add it here. Each question will have a number. So when you post something on this thread, please start your post with the number so everyone knows which question you're referring to. Now Chaniites 'in charge' of a topic, please feed the topic, analyze and trigger questions (as I said I'm right now doing a lot of things and won't be able to follow on the long run - let's say we're all in charge of this thread as it is about us all). Below, is a list of the questions that need to be addressed to have a take on Humanity in its actual state and a projection into space / time to start sketching a future in a very down to earth, practical way. Is there a future or this is it? Are we going toward extinction? or to the contrary toward peace, well-being, abundance for everyone ? what can I do as an individual to promote change? and which? PS: it's inevitable: we'll have double posts here particularly at the beginning as we'll be gathering questions from other posts regarding this topic. So don't worry but be selective please. 5. Thought i may as well post this here incase for future reference..i hope it is not true. A lady friend i met whilst in Vegas told my mate there an interesting story regarding the blood moon. In short she lives in a tall building in Vegas and her cleaning lady told her she had a message for her. She claims "God spoke to me last night" and i must tell you it is not safe for you to live here anymore. over the next 15months of the blood moon we are going to have 3 very big earthquakes, one in the Dominican republic one in Puerto Rico, and a massive earthquake in California that will measure 12.5 on the Richter Scale (cleaning lady speaks spanish but said the word richter scale in english) She goes on to say that it will rock Vegas with around 8.0 on the richter scale and buildings are not safe to be in. This event will take 40 million lives. Our friend was and is still very shaken by this, she said she even asked "god" (btw she is in no way a god fearing person, just very spiritual) if this is true and you want me to know, send me a sign. Twice the next day she got harassed by two people preaching God in different locations….now she is looking for a place outside of Vegas. Anyway thought i would share, who knows.
  6. No nuclear waste: Fuel of future produced at Russia's high-tech underground plant September 17, 2014 "Russia’s ‘Breakthrough’ energy project enables closed a nuclear fuel cycle and a future without radioactive waste. The first batch of MOX nuclear fuel has been manufactured for the world’s only NPP industrially power generating breeder reactors. The first ten kilograms of the mixed-oxide fuel (MOX) - a mixture of plutonium and uranium dioxides (UO2 and PuO2), have been industrially produced by Russia’s nuclear monopoly, Rosatom, at the Mining & Chemical Combine (GKhK) in the Krasnoyarsk region. A world first, tablets of the fuel of the future have been put on serial production and are destined for Russia’s next generation BN-800 breeder reactor (880 megawatts), currently undergoing tests at the Beloyarskaya nuclear power plant. The production line, now undergoing start-up and adjustment, was assembled in a mine 200 meters underground and will become fully operational by the end of 2014. Fast fission reactors solve the problem of depleted uranium nuclear fuel on the planet. They can ‘burn’ not only ‘classic’ uranium-235, (scarce and already coming to an end), but also uranium-238, which is abundant, and expands the world’s nuclear fuel capacity by an estimated 50 times. Fuel for breeder reactors could even be made from nuclear waste, which from an ecological point of view is a priceless advantage. The GKhK facility will be equipped with a unique dissolvent reactor that will break down nuclear waste containing plutonium and extract plutonium dioxide to be used in MOX-fuel production." snip http://rt.com/news/188332-mox-nuclear-fuel-production/ tx phillipbbg

  8. By Edwin Kee on 01/30/2014 "Do you think that self-driving cars would one day be so popular, that there is no need for one to actually own a driving license any more? I guess a whole lot of it really depends on the situation, but one thing is for sure – cars do seem to be getting smarter and smarter in this day and age. In fact, a team of engineering students over in India who happen to be working on a project over at the Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology have decided to develop a thought-controlled car. Yes sir, you can feel all smug as though you were Professor Xavier himself, as this small van has been transformed into a thought controlled vehicle using off the shelf parts. One of the most essential part of this particular ride would be the Emotiv EEG headset which would function as a controller. Needless to say, this is one concept that will take years of refinement before it is actually safe to be unleashed on our roads, considering how easily distracted we can get these days. Imagine driving using your brain when you start to think about work or a personal relationship issue that needs looking into – how will the car be able to know which part of your thought process is used for driving, and the other to head to the nearest flower shop to purchase a bunch of roses?" http://www.ubergizmo.com/2014/01/thought-controlled-car-drives-the-future/ there is a video at the link, and yes, they may have a lot of work ahead, but I cannot help thinking about BlueET, his Co-Evolution and the thought controlled cars they had. We are on the way to the future it would seem.
  9. Ethical Technology December 27, 2013 This is not exactly brand new, but thought as it is ongoing, some might still be interested "Is there another you reading this article at this exact moment in a parallel universe? Dr. Brian Greene, author of The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos, believes that this freakish quirk of nature may exist; and he discusses its amazing possibilities in this 3-minute TV interview." (from February, 2011) http://www.9news.com/news/article/182664/509/Is-there-another-you-reading-this-in-a-parallel-universe The following piece was first published here on Nov 18, 2013, and is the #3 most viewed of the year. (Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies or IEET) "A growing number of cosmologists agree with Greene that we are but one of many universes and at least one of these other worlds lies close to ours, maybe only a millimeter away. We can't see this world, because it exists in a type of space different from the four dimensions of our everyday reality. MIT's Max Tegmark believes this multiverse model of 'many universes' is grounded in modern physics and will eventually be testable, predictive and disprovable. "This is not sci-fi," he says, "its real science." As research at the CERN Large Hadron Colliderprogresses, scientists are talking increasingly of a "new physics" on the horizon, which promise to help researchers understand more of the unknowns about our universe. This new approach includes developing a better understanding of dark energy, a mystery force that some forward thinkers believe indicates that a 'sister' universe lurks in our neighborhood. Strange happenings have been observed by cosmologists such as the Andromeda galaxy, 2.2 million light-years away speeding towards the Milky Way at 200,000 mph. This phenomenon makes sense logically if gravity leaking from an invisible universe were pulling the two galaxies together. Researchers at the WMAP space telescope recently discovered a force 10,000 times larger than the Milky Way, which they believe offers powerful evidence that a parallel universe may be in the area. In another attempt to search for parallel worlds, NASAinstalled the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 at the ISS to record data that may prove the existence of other universes, some of which might even be made of anti-matter. Unraveling this cosmic mystery has attracted worldwide interest. The project draws support from most EU nations; plus Taiwan, China, Russia, and the U.S. snip http://ieet.org/index.php/IEET/more/pelletier20131227
  10. Shara Tibken November 29, 2013 The chip giant is working on "perceptual computing" technology that will sense your emotions and your body language. Here's an inside look. "SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- If the next big wave in devices turns out to be gestures and eye tracking, Intel wants to be ready. Intel is the king of PCs, but it hasn't always been ahead of evolving innovations. Its processors power more than 80 percent of the world's computers and the vast majority of its servers, but Intel has made little headway in smartphones and tablets. To spur interest in PCs again, as well as persuade more mobile device makers to use its chips, Intel has devoted significant resources and efforts to something it calls "perceptual computing." Perceptual computing may sound like a jargony, marketing term, but it does just what it says -- it uses the senses to help technology interpret what's going on around it. Those features, such as gestures, facial recognition, and voice recognition, should all make devices more "natural, intuitive, and immersive," says Anil Nanduri, one of the Intel executives in charge of the company's efforts in perceptual computing. The goal is getting "sensory inputs that make [computers] more human like," Nanduri said. "Once you give computers the ability to assess depth, a lot of wonderful things can happen." Devices will be able to sense emotion and detect a person's biometric data simply using a camera. They'll be able to carry on conversations with users and understand context -- or what "play me some jazz" means -- instead of simply following commands. Computers will be able to pick out individual fingers instead of simply recognizing an entire hand or the fact that a person is present. And they'll create more immersive augmented reality, such as digital versions of children's pop-up books." http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57614001-92/wave-fingers-make-faces-the-future-of-computing-at-intel/
  11. Liat Clark October 28, 2013 "A team of neuroscientists has published a paper claiming it has developed a mathematical calculation that could potentially predict the tipping point of any massive event -- from a market crash to a brain seizure. Neuroscientists are used to working on systems of nodes, whereby one neuron in the brain ignites a stream of connected activity when activated -- a web-like chain reaction that unfolds in seemingly unpredictable ways. Of course, these can be predicted if you have the right information. For instance, when a team of neuroscientists monitored the brain activity of a macaque while its hand was being touched in a recent study, the team could identify which chain reaction of electrical stimulation in the brain signified that sensation. By replicating the same pattern, the team could cause the macaque to "feel" that same sensation artificially. Now, in a study let by professors at the University of Sussex, along with colleagues working in psychology and physics, that kind of pattern hunting has been translated into a computer simulation that those behind it say could one day "predict calamitous events before they happen". snip The team suggests it's possible to measure when a system reaches that tipping point, when it moves from a healthy system to one that is overwhelmingly indicating a change. It occurs when an overwhelming number of nodes have caused an integrated change too big to remain stable. The equation was tested, but not using seizure or financial data. It was tested using a model physicists use to predict "phase transitions" in standard systems, know as the Ising model. It's a model of a ferromagnetic material that depicts how atoms in a one-, two- and three-dimensional lattices interact, and how these small phase transitions together generate a total state change -- creating a magnetic field." snip http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-10/28/predicting-disasters
