National Energy Board responds to gas pipeline explosion south of Winnipeg

National Energy Board responds to gas pipeline explosion south of Winnipeg

"CALGARY, Jan. 25, 2014 /CNW/ - The National Energy Board (NEB or the Board) is responding to a pipeline incident that took place in an isolated area near the town of Otterburne, approximately 25 kilometres south of Winnipeg, Manitoba, on a sweet natural gas pipeline owned and operated by TransCanada Pipeline Inc. (TCPL). The pipeline break and resulting fire, which were reported to the NEB shortly after 3 am (MST) this morning, did not cause any harm to local residents, but as a precaution one home in proximity to the area was evacuated.

The incident triggered emergency measures that included isolating Line 1 and depressurizing the pipeline in order to contain the fire and avoid further damage. The line is shut down, it continues to depressurize and the fire is expected to be extinguished sometime Saturday morning.

The NEB's Emergency Response Team has been deployed and will be onsite to monitor and assess the company's immediate response. Representatives from TCPL are on the ground securing and assessing the incident site. The local fire department and Hydro Manitoba personnel are also onsite to lend their support."

Kentucky Gas Line Explosion Destroys Homes, Injures 2

February 13, 2014

By LIZ FIELDS, REBECCA LEE and DAN GOOD

"A natural gas explosion this morning in Adair County Ky., destroyed two nearby homes and sent two people to the hospital, officials told ABC News.

The underground gas line exploded at around 1 a.m., leaving a crater in the ground 60 feet deep by 50 feet wide, according to county EMA director Greg Thomas. Three homes caught fire and two of them were completely destroyed, along with barns and cars, Thomas said.

Approximately 20 homes were evacuated Thursday while officials declared a state of emergency for Adair County. All residents whose homes were not damaged or destroyed by the explosion were allowed to return to their houses later in the afternoon, Thomas said.

One person was transported to a local hospital with burns and another was brought to the hospital for evaluation, said Thomas. Both were later released and are currently residing with relatives.

Jason Rector was at the scene of the explosion this morning with a group of American Red Cross volunteers delivering food and support to emergency workers and victims whose houses were involved."

My sister in law works at NH Ball Bearings. Thankfully, she was not one of those hurt. Very scary. Healing thoughts to those injured in the blast.

I was watching one of those videos, or reading about explosions and they said that as many 4 of these happen in a month's time on average.  Thank you for your post Angel, so glad your sister in law was not hurt, and I will add my thoughts to yours wishing for good things for those who were hurt.  My girlfriend's friend who's house exploded last week is still in critical condition, and they are still saying they don't know what caused it. Gas, is what it was, imo, because his furnace was acting up just before it happened.

A sad update on the person who's house exploded.  Frank did not make it. He died today.  He is going to be missed, he was an EMT and a person who was always there if anyone needed anything, a real asset to his community and just a real nice guy all around .  RIP Frank Mihalovich.  Brentwood, Pa.  1944-2014

Woman's Body Found at NJ Explosion Site

March 4, 2014

By Kelly Bayliss and Karen Araiza

"A woman's body was found on the hood of a car at the site of a gas explosion in Ewing Township, N.J., Tuesday evening, several hours after the blast rocked a housing development in the Mercer County community. The explosion injured seven other people, obliterated one home and damaged 55 other units in the condominium complex. At least 10 of those homes were so heavily damaged, they're considered a total loss, according to township police Lt. Ron Lunetta.

Search crews found the woman's body on a car parked outside 28 Crockett Lane, the home where the explosion occurred.

"Because of the condition of the body, we are not able to ID her. We have to wait for the autopsy and go through the autopsy procedure to do that so we're 100 percent sure," Lunetta said"

The explosion happened about 12:50 p.m. while workers were trying to repair a gas line at 28 Crockett Lane inside the South Fork development. It left a swath of smoldering debris and damage that looked more like what you see after tornadoes -- crumpled metal, tree trunks pierced by the siding off homes, insulation and everyday items hanging in treetops."

4 Injured, 200 Evacuated After Washington Plant Explosion

Authorities say four workers were injured and about two hundred residents were evacuated after a large explosion and fire Monday morning at a natural gas processing plant in the Eastern Washington.

Massive Explosion Rocks Washington State Natural Gas Plant

A liquefied natural gas pipeline plant suffered an explosion and fire at 8:19 a.m. PDT in Plymouth, Washington Monday morning. The Tri-Cities Herald reports that four people were injured. Williams Northwest Pipeline spokesperson Michele Swaner said one employee was injured from burns, but that he would recover.

The cause is still uncertain, but fire officials said that it began with an explosion in a building, and then a natural gas pipeline ruptured, which sent shrapnel into a “huge” storage tank, leading to a risk of a much larger explosion. People living three to six miles away from the plant said they could feel the first explosion, according to the local NBC and CBS affiliates.

Wyoming gas explosion prompts evacuation of town

April 24, 2014

OPAL, Wyo. –  Residents and emergency crews are waiting for a fire to burn itself out after an explosion at a natural gas processing plant in a small town in southwestern Wyoming.

No injuries were reported in the explosion Wednesday afternoon in Opal. The town of about 95 people about 100 miles northeast of Salt Lake City remains evacuated.

'Lincoln County spokesman Stephen Malik said Thursday there’s no estimate of when residents will be allowed to go home because it’s not known how long it will take for all the gas in the plant to burn off.

There’s no immediate word on what caused the explosion.

No structures in the town were affected, and the fire was confined to the facility operated by pipeline operator Williams Partners LP, county officials said. Williams is based in Tulsa, Okla."

2 Dead In Explosions at Escambia Jail

Two people were killed and scores injured Wednesday night, when "an apparent gas explosion" demolished a portion of the Escambia County Central Booking and Detention Center. The blast, which occurred around 11 p.m., rattled houses up to three miles away and forced county officials to evacuate some 600 prisoners.

Droves of police officers and first responders roamed up and down Leonard Street in the wee hours of Thursday morning, coralling prisoners into school buses so they could be transported to detention facilities elsewhere in the region. Emergency personnel from as far away as Orange Beach, Ala., responded to the scene.

Kathleen Dough-Castro, chief public information officer for the county, said male prisoners were being transported to detention facilities across Escambia County. About 200 female prisoners also were taken to the Santa Rosa County Jail, she said.

The total number of injured had not been determined by early Thursday morning. However, Castro placed the number at more than 100. Dozens of people — both inmates and corrections officers — were taken out of the jail on stretchers and transported to area hospitals under police guard.

House explodes in Thornton; one person unaccounted for
June 19, 2014
By Anthony Cotton

"THORNTON — A house exploded Thursday afternoon in Thornton, flinging debris onto the roofs of nearby homes and sending a column of smoke into the sky.
The explosion, shortly after 3 p.m., could be heard for miles.
One person was unaccounted for. Shortly before 9 p.m., authorities reported the search had located a scent, but had not yet found a body.
The ruins of the house, near Cottonwood Lakes Boulevard and Monroe Drive, were being searched by Thornton fire and police investigators, seeking clues to the cause of the blast.
The fire was out within 20 minutes, but the neighborhood still smelled of smoke at 5 p.m.
The homeowners told police there was a third party living in the home and they think that person was in the house because their car and motorcycle were both there."
