Birds Fall From Sky In California, Thousands Of Dead Fish Found In Chicago

Dec 4, 2012

Travis Walter Donovan

"Over 100 birds were found dead along a California highway this past weekend, and thousands of dead fish were reported along Chicago's lakefront prior to that. A smaller incident of around 30 dead birds was also reported in Missouri.

According to the AP, the dead birds found along Highway 101 in California "were intact and had not been shot." Thousands of gizzard shad, a member of the herring family, were found dead in Chicago's harbors, many floating in ice, The Sun-Time reports. Even more abnormal, according to wildlife experts, was the sight of Canada geese and mallards munching on the dead fish, something not ordinarily a part of their diet.

California and Illinois join countless other states that have seen mass animal deaths in the past weeks. Thousands of dead birds and fish were reported in Arkansas within 100 miles of each other, and then days later hundreds more dead birds turned up 300 miles away in Louisiana. Reports of similar incidents continued, with dead birds turning up Kentucky and millions of dead fish appearing in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay."

Squid Washing Ashore Along Santa Cruz County Beaches

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/video?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=8054051

Hundreds of Humboldt squid wash up at Rio del Mar

Hundreds of jumbo flying squid washed ashore along the beaches at Rio del Mar near Aptos, but why it's happening remains a mystery.

The squid are also known as Humboldt squid. Residents told us this began on Sunday and that raccoons and seagulls have eaten most of the squid, but you can still find plenty of them out there.

"Aw man, there's probably thousands. There are a lot of them all up and down," said Aptos resident Norman Aguillon. By the end of the day, most of the squid had been eaten and Aguillon says the seagulls have been gorging themselves. "Our dogs wanted to go after them because they were all sitting on the beach. They had their fill."

This is even weirder now than it started out to be. Locals have now researched the bay and it seems that EVERYTHING living underwater in it died in a very short period of time. Loads of dead fish in the water and on the shore, but no life to be found anywhere according to follow up news.

Decease does not seem to be an explanation but samples are being researched, and the fish fleeing from larger predators has been ruled out. And the fish dead is/was in a good condition so death by hunger is not the case.

There were estimated to be about 300.000 TONS of herring in the bay before all life in it died. That is known because of measurements/estimations that were made last week, about a week before the fish died.

This is a bit weird because around a week or more ago I was laying in bed trying to 'see' what might come next.  I saw a place of ice and I thought it must be either the arctic or antarctic then all of a sudden some round (or whatever it was) was fired from the icy land, it sort of looked like a missle but not exactly and the trajectory was not high in the air like a missle would be.  I couldn't get a clearer picture and thought that I would look out for 'something' being fired off from one of the bases at the poles. Maybe it was in the north and it was something other than a missle that has crashed into the ocean somewhere and caused this dieoff - not sure but thought I would mention it anyway and it might give someone else a clue.

Thanks for sharing Jessica.

Very close by this bay is Snæfellsjøkull. It has been known for its mystic powers for kind of ever and has caught the attention of some outside the country. I found this text in English after a quick search (not the best description sorry but found nothing else right away)

Snæfellsjökull is a perfectly shaped cone volcano and said to be, by Indian new age gurus, one of seven power stations scattered around the world. In 1991 extra terrestrial contact was expected to take place here and Michael Dillon the predictor gathered at the roots of the mountain with his followers to wait on the 5th of November. The Martians decided to sail past that day but this wonderful mountain is beautiful both seen from Reykjavík and up close.

It was also used by Jules Vern in his "Journey to the center of the Earth" science novel some 100 years ago. It housed the entrance in his story.

There is one other thing that comes to my mind regarding this. I have posted it before in the "mayan countdown thread". It is a picture on a mayan artifact. You can argue that the picture shows the island and what is more, it shows this place/part of it (the west) in more detail then the northern, southern and eastern part of it. In one of the pics you can see the location of the bay (Kolgrafafjørdur) and the clacier (Snæfellsjokull) and how close they are.

In the other picture you can see the drawing on the artifact. You can compare it to a map of Iceland and judge for your self. Kolgrafafjørdur is on Snæfellsnes which is the leg of the "dog",LOL. The island is often compared to an animal. It has a head, a body and two legs sticking out. I put a zoom out pic of the island with the other two.

QUOTE FROM NEWS

Representatives from the Marine Research Institute will today by boat to Kolgrafarfjörð to attempt to estimate the amount of dead herring on the bottom of the fjord, after a diver saw  patches of dead herring all over the bottom.

Underwater cameras will be used and other measuring instruments. Furthermore, are they going to try to determine how much of dead fish is in the fjord coastline.

Yet there have been found more species than herring that have died in the fjord recently, probably due to hypothermia.

This could be some first indications that the gulf stream is stoping :o

Not good for Iceland at all. A town in Canada that is positioned about as far north as Iceland is uses freezing containers to keep food from freezing, and I am not kidding now. The gulf stream keeps the island warmer then it should be and makes it inhabitable.

And not good at all for the rest of the world since the gulf stream is a very very important aspect in Earths weather and eco system.

Birds fall from sky in Seymour

Dozens of starlings litter roadway and fields

Dec. 31, 2012

(remember 2012 had a leap day)

"SEYMOUR —

Residents and those passing by near Dogwood Hills subdivision on Boyd Creek Highway Sunday afternoon were met with an unusual scene. Dozens of dead birds littered the highway and surrounding fields after falling from the sky.

Sgt. Robert Stoffle of the Sevier County Sheriff's Department said a call about the birds came in around 1:15 p.m. He said a witness reported seeing the birds in flight before turning back around to see them on the ground.

"It covered one lane of traffic," Stoffle said of the bodies of the birds. Estimates of the number of birds varied from between 30 and 60 up to 300. They appeared to be starlings.

While the vast majority of the birds were dead by the time The Mountain Press photographer arrived, several were still alive, convulsing and flopping their wings on the ground.

A count of the birds on the scene stopped at around 50, when not even half of the visible birds were tallied. Perhaps dozens more were scattered in a nearby field, which was flooded from the recent rainfall. As far as 60 yards from the main site of the birds, individual starlings were found."

STATE: Thousands of dead birds are showing up on northern Michigan’s shorelines (VIDEO

Jan. 11, 2013

By Don Gardner

@skeeoos

Journal Register News Service

doc50edd1aa3d7928159900721.jpg

"The rapidly changing ecology of the Great Lakes Basin, brought on in large part by non-native, invasive species, is causing devastation among Michigan’s waterfowl, especially common loons.

The common loon, a beloved, iconic bird known for its eerily lonely, two-note call and its beautiful markings, suffered devastating losses along Lake Michigan’s northern shoreline this fall. Thousands of dead birds, mainly loons, washed ashore — from the Upper Peninsula, down to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. A large percentage of the dead loons had just entered their first year of breeding maturity.

The reason for the die-off, which follows similar incidents in 2006 and 2007, isn’t fully understood. But it is suspected that it is driven by the food chain linking the loon to invasive species, specifically, the quagga mussel, the zebra mussel and the round goby.

Since 1988, when the first zebra mussels in Michigan were found in Lake St. Clair, the invasive mussels have been clearing and “cleaning” Great Lakes water columns by consuming plankton. While the end result is a more aesthetically pleasing water column, the clearer water has allowed the sun’s rays to penetrate deeper, causing larger and larger algae mats to flourish on the bottom. As the algae mat builds upon itself and dies, it becomes anaerobic — depleted of oxygen — and type-E botulism bacteria develops. Gobies living in that environment at the bottom of the lake pick up the toxin produced by the bacteria. The gobies are then preyed upon by the loons and other fish-eating waterfowl, which become infected by the botulism. The toxin affects the bird’s nervous system and musculature, leaving it unable to fly. Soon, it can no longer keep its head aloft, and it drowns."

So we have zebra mussles...from Russia...and a jellyfish that is indigenous to China, invading and causing mayhem in the biggest bodies of fresh water we have in the states....HMMMMMM......

Thousands of dead fish wash up on coast of South Carolina

Mystery intensifies over fish kill: Thousands of Atlantic menhaden – a baitfish that plays a key role in the South Atlantic ecosystem – were found washed up on the beaches in the south area of the Grand Strand on Tuesday and Wednesday, leaving S.C. Department of Natural Resources investigators trying to determine the cause. From DeBordieu, a private community just north of Georgetown, northward to Pawleys Island, a rough estimate of 30,000 to 40,000 menhaden in the 6-to-8 inch range were spread along the beach and first spotted by beachgoers taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather.

Hundreds of thousands of dead fish reported on Masonboro Island

Jan. 15, 2012

By: Ashlea Kosikowski

"MASONBORO ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have been reported this week at Masonboro Island by state environmental officials, according to a spokesperson for the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Environmental officials explain that the fish, Atlantic menhaden, which travel in very large groups, took a wrong turn, up Loosins Creek.

In under an hour, the area caused dissolved oxygen levels in the water to drop to close to zero, which ended up killing them.

As a result, the dead fish have been discovered along the island's beaches and in the water.

Officials say they've noticed a pattern of dead fish in winter months and attribute it to the menhaden tightening their school.

Workers with Coastal Management, Water Quality and Marine Fisheries are keeping an eye on the area, and throughout the weekend, dead fish will probably continue to surface.

The workers have a monitoring station set up that checks the water for dissolved oxygen levels, temperature, pH levels and other data."

Followup on dead herring in Kolgrafarfjørdur in Iceland.

Scientists are now looking into a plausible cause for the mass death of herring as being the crossing of the fjord with a bridge.

After the bridge was built the opening of the fjord is 1/10th of what it used to be causing sea level to be 9cm higher in lowest tide then it was before. In other words the sea can not recycle as effectively as it could before the man made structure was built.

This has not been proven by any way but seems to be a plausible cause.

One more feather in the hat of the human race, or not.

Up to 12 million Bees Found Dead in Florida and No one Knows Why

article-2044764-0E34C6D800000578-304_468x451.jpg

"Authorities have already ruled out disease, including the infamous “Colony Collapse Disorder” (CCD), as the cause of a recent honeybee holocaust that took place in Brevard County, Florida. The UK’s Daily Mail reports that up to 12 million bees from roughly 800 apiaries in the area all dropped dead at roughly the same time around September 26 — and local beekeepers say pesticides are likely to blame. CCD is the term often used to describe the inexplicable mass die-off of honeybees around the world, which typically involves honeybees leaving their hives and, for whatever reason, never finding their way back home. Mass die-offs associated with CCD often occur at seemingly random locations around the world, and typically involve a gradual process of disappearance and eventual colony collapse — and the dead bees are typically nowhere to be found. But the recent Florida event involved hundreds of colonies from 30 different sites in a one-and-a-half mile radius literally dropping dead all at the same time and leaving their carcasses behind, which is why authorities have dismissed CCD as the cause. Based on the appearance of the dead bees, as well as the synchronous timing of their deaths, pesticide spraying appear to be the culprit in this case. “I’m a pretty tough guy, but it is heart wrenching,” said Charles Smith of Smith Family Honey Company to News 13 in Orlando."

Thousands of ostriches slaughtered on S. African farms due to avian flu

This is from 7/13/2012  but...I had/have an interest in Ostriches from SA...and have been wondering where they disappeared too...then today, I find this answer...

"The ostrich industry has been dealt with a new blow by a fresh outbreak of bird flu that prompted the slaughter of thousands of ostriches in South Africa's Western Cape Province, industry sources said on Thursday.

The outbreak affected three farms -- one near Albertinia and two near Heidelberg in the province, according to the sources who refused to be named.

It came after the ostrich industry stated earlier that it had brought the H5N2 disease in the province under control and was a step closer to having its export status re-instated.

The Cape Times said in an earlier report that a total of about 8,000 ostriches were slaughtered in accordance with the government's "stamping out" policy which stipulates that all birds must be slaughtered once infection is detected.

"It's a terrible thing for the whole industry," SA Ostrich Business Chamber CEO Piet Kleyn told the newspaper.

"We have to look at other control measures because this stamping out is possibly not the way to go."

The European Union (EU) imposed a ban on all ostrich meat exports from South Africa following the initial outbreak in 2011.

This cost the ostrich industry millions of rands every month."

U.S. bat epidemic spreads to 20th state

White-nose syndrome has been confirmed in Illinois, state officials announced this week, marking the 20th state affected by the deadly, fast-moving bat disease.

"White-nose syndrome has invaded Illinois, wildlife officials confirmed Thursday, making it the 20th U.S. state to be infested by the bizarre, bat-killing fungal infection.

The epidemic has been sweeping west since its mysterious 2006 debut in New York, killing about 6 million bats along the way. It's now confirmed in 20 U.S. states and five Canadian provinces, with a mortality rate as high as 100 percent in some bat colonies. It's known to infect seven types of hibernating bats, including two that are endangered, and biologists say it may eventually threaten at least half of all North American bat species.

"We are saddened by the discovery of WNS in Illinois," says Jeremy Coleman, national WNS coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in a statement released Thursday. "We will continue to work with our partners to address this devastating disease and work toward conservation of bat species in North America."

Algae bloom kills record number of manatees

May 12, 2013

By Melissa Gray and Joe Sutton

"-- Florida's endangered manatees have long suffered from human activity, but this year they face an especially deadly threat hidden in the waters where they swim.

An algae bloom off southwest Florida, called Florida red tide, has killed 174 manatees since January, the highest number to die from red tide in a calendar year, state wildlife officials said Monday.

A red tide is a higher than normal concentration of a microscopic algae that appears in the Gulf of Mexico. At high enough concentrations, the algae can turn the water red or brown, hence the name.

Red tides happen almost every year in southwest Florida and sometimes last just a few weeks, but this year the red tide has lingered and settled in an area of warm water where the manatees have migrated."
