GM wheat scientists plead with protesters not to destroy ‘years of work’ after they threaten to remove crops unless experiments are halted

Scientists at a leading agricultural research centre have sent an open letter to anti-GM protesters pleading with them not to destroy 'years of work'.

The protest group, Take The Flour Back, is planning a 'mass action against genetically modified wheat' at Rothamsted Research in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, on 27 May.

Supporters have been urged to congregate in Rothamsted Park, next to the institute, at noon.

<snip>

'We're asking the scientists to do the responsible thing and stop this trial,' she said. 'If they don't, we're going to have to do the responsible thing ourselves.

<snip>

'This wheat uses a synthetic gene that's most like a gene from a cow. It's quite weird technology that hasn't been properly tested and should not be tested outside.

'It's a threat to the environment, and also we feel it's about making money, not about feeding the world and helping UK farmers. There are other solutions, like organic farming.'

Asked if the group would call off the protest in response to the scientists' plea, she said: 'No, we will not.

GM soy linked to health damage in pigs

A Danish farming newspaper has caused quite a stir by devoting a sizeable part of its 13 April edition to the discoveries by pig farmer lb Borup Pedersen that GM soy has a damaging effect both on his animals and on his farming profitability. On the front page of the paper there was a lead story under the headline "Pig farmer reaps gains from GMO-free soy".......

When Danish pig farmer lb Borup Pedersen replaced GM soy with non-GM soy in the feeding schedules on his farm, he immediately observed positive changes in the health of the sow herd.....

See article on what GM soya did to the pigs - diarrhoea, loss of appetite, less births,  stillborns, weaker piglets

There's soya in all sorts of foods now.  For example, I see it as an ingredient  in bread and biscuits.  I choose organic as much as I can but not all my meat is organic and it's used as an animal feed.  Also,  we eat out and the children have their school meals.  It's quite worrying.

But we don't have any diarrhoea in my household .... yet.

Kashi Cereal Stirs Anger

Exposed by Small Rhode Island Grocer

May 18, 2012

From Dr. Mercola

Story at-a-glance

A note on a Rhode Island grocer’s shelf has gone viral, informing consumers everywhere that the popular “natural” cereal brand Kashi actually contains genetically engineered grains

As a result of consumer outrage, the Kashi brand, which is owned by Kellogg Company, has now pledged to use at least 70 percent certified organic ingredients by 2015—a move that may be too little, too late for many health conscious consumers.

The pledge came just days after initially trying to further mislead consumers by denying the test results, which had found Kashi GoLean cereal contained 100 percent genetically engineered soy

Currently, the ONLY label that can protect you against genetically engineered ingredients, synthetic pesticides, and other harmful additives is the USDA 100% Organic label

Five million Brazilian farmers are locked in a lawsuit with US-based biotech giant Monsanto, suing for as much as 6.2 billion euros. They say that the genetic-engineering company has been collecting royalties on crops it unfairly claims as its own.

The farmers claim that Monsanto unfairly collects exorbitant profits every year worldwide on royalties from “renewal” seed harvests. “Renewal” crops are those that have been planted using seed from the previous year’s harvest. While the practice of renewal farming is an ancient one, Monsanto disagrees, demanding royalties from any crop generation produced from its genetically-engineered seed. Because the engineered seed is patented, Monsanto not only charges an initial royalty on the sale of the crop produced, but a continuing 2 per cent royalty on every subsequent crop, even if the farmer is using a later generation of seed.

"Monsanto gets paid when it sell the seeds. The law gives producers the right to multiply the seeds they buy and nowhere in the world is there a requirement to pay (again). Producers are in effect paying a private tax on production," Jane Berwanger, lawyer for the farmers told the Associated Press reports.

i knowfrom personal experience that a subcequent generation seed thus plant is not identical to the predecesor but has mutated according to the local environment it was planted.

Thus the 2nd generation monsato seeds are not geneticaly the same as the 1st original batch that was sold. therefore monsato has no right to royalties as the dna is not entirely of their design as mama nature has altered it

all this in a perfect world where the courts are impartial and not part of the corporate machine

Right on T.

Nature trumps them everytime. Pigweed in Georgia is pissing of Monster co. and lawsuits are flying.

Over in Poland http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1584.htm

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs report circulating in the Kremlin today states that United States President Obama has undertaken a campaign to “crush” the nation of Poland after its government this past week officially banned the planting of Monsanto’s MON810, a genetically-modified (GM) variety of maize (corn) that produces its own built-in Bt insecticide in every kernel and is held to be responsible for the global collapse of bee populations and the catastrophic killing of all bat species in North America.

To understand Obama’s anger against Poland and his ties to the most dangerous food ever known to man we can read as reported by Ronnie Cummins, Founder and Director of the Organic Consumers Association:

President Obama knows that agribusiness cannot be trusted with the policy and regulatory powers of government. On the campaign trail in 2007, he promised:

“We'll tell ConAgra that it's not the Department of Agribusiness. It's the Department of Agriculture. We're going to put the people's interests ahead of the special interests.”

But, starting with his choice for USDA Secretary, the pro-biotech former governor of Iowa, Tom Vilsack (who in a stunning reversal greenlighted Monsanto’s genetically modified alfalfa without testing), Obama has let Monsanto, DuPont and the other pesticide and genetic engineering companies know they'll have plenty of friends and supporters within his administration.

I don't know if anyone posted this beofre, but this article explains some of what they are doing- it's interesting.

From the article:

Did you know that the majority of the produce we consume, if not organic, is genetically modified? If you eat processed food, you are eating GM food. What does this mean: it means that big corporations, such as Monsanto for example, are patenting their new breed of, oh lets say, potato. And these potatoes have their cells shot full of an anthrax type bacteria that transforms them into pesticide potatoes. These potatoes now produce their own pesticide that allows them to withstand any insect that would want to eat it. Once eaten by an insect, the insect dies. We, too, are consuming these very pesticide potatoes.

How does this change in a food cell happen? These changes happen with a gene gun that shoots the gene into the cell or through a bacterial infection process. Plant cells are then re-grown with the new genes through tissue transfer. This process is like shooting a bullet into a human. They don't know what kind of damage is done or effect it has on the gene. Each cell is unique after invasion of the gene or bacteria, just as each human is different in their tolerance to it. The harm, risks and long term damage of this type of gene insertion is unknown. The risks to people, insects and animals are unknown, but true testing isn't showing positive results in lab animals. This is the information big corporations don't want you to know.

Congress sides with Monsanto over GMO battle

June 21, 2012

"Biotech giants Monsanto were awarded a victory by lawmakers in Washington this week after a congressional panel voted to let farmers plant genetically modified crops made by the agriculture company despite pending legal proceedings.

A committee made up of members of the US House of Representatives agreed on Tuesday this week to allow genetically modified crops manufactured by the Monsanto corporation and other biotech companies, including competitors Dupont Co., to continue to be used on American farmlands. The ruling comes despite a trove of legal challenges that have hindered full-fledged approval of some genetically modified organisms, or GMOs."

"Although the USDA has previously authorized Monsanto-created biocrops to be planted, an array of legal appeals have left the major agriculture company combating with opponents as of late. Questions over the safety of the lab-made crops on human health and the environment, as well as opposition from small time farmers constantly being fought by Monsanto, has slowed the federal agency from fully approving some crops. Now after the latest vote, Monsanto and its competitors will be able to offer seeds even as the Justice Department determines the legitimacy of the appeals."

Seems the whole world is waking up even Nature.....

Nature fights back - bugs devour GM Monsanto corn with a vengeance

"Corn genetically engineered by Monsanto to kill western corn rootworm is reportedly being devoured by those pests with a vengeance. Thanks to heavy reliance on the genetically modified (GM) crops, the tiny rootworm pest has overtaken fields, outsmarting the genetic engineering that was supposed to keep it away.

Nature fights back against GM corn

The GM corn, launched in 2003, is engineered to produce a protein, known as Cry3Bb1, derived from a bacterium known as Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt. In theory, rootworms ingest Bt corn roots and the protein is fatal. However, recent reports indicate that pesticide-resistant rootworms are showing up weeks earlier and more voraciously than ever.

In a research paper published in the July/August/September 2012 issue of the journal GM Crops & Food, scientists reported that samples taken in 2010 indicated that rootworm populations had an eleven-fold survival rate on Cry3Bb1 maize than did control populations. The paper noted that resistant corn rootworm populations first identified in 2009 had three-fold survival rates on Cry3Bb1 maize at that time compared to other populations.

Mike Gray, a professor of entomology with the University of Illinois reported: "We're still early in the growing season, and the adults are about a month ahead of schedule," explained Gray. "I was surprised to see them - and there were a lot."

Reports of increasing rootworm damage began coming in last year after Iowa State Universityresearcher Aaron Gassmann published a study saying that the rootworms in Iowa were becoming resistant to GM corn, creating so-called "superbugs." Farmers in several states found that the western corn rootworm was surviving after ingesting an insecticidal toxin produced by the corn plants.

With both demand and prices high, many farmers are planting corn year after year and on more acres, increasing the possibility that resistance could develop. Typically, corn farmers have had to rotate corn crops to minimize pest pressures. But with Bt corn, many simply planted "corn on corn," year after year. Federal regulators require a 20 percent "refuge" of non-Bt corn near Bt acres, but many growers have ignored that and oversight has been lax.

The new "superbug" rootworms may lead to serious financial woes for both farmers and the rest of us, according to a letter sent to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by 22 prominent scientists and corn-management experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and universities across the Midwestern Corn Belt. Patrick Porter, PhD, associate professor at Texas A&M University, who drafted the letter, noted that farmers are paying almost twice as much for seeds that don't live up to their promises, and are then having to resort to insecticides on top of that.

So rootworms and pig weed now seem to stump GM. Wondering what else Nature is doing to fight back.

A few random thoughts....perhaps they want the corn to rot, DustBowl II?

Doesn´t the majority of corn end up being used for the Ethanol process anyways?

Monsanto Fails at Improving Agriculture

"Help UCS Set the Record Straight by Sharing Our New Ad Campaign

Monsanto's advertisements tell an impressive tale of the agribusiness giant's achievements: Feeding a growing population. Protecting natural resources. Promoting biodiversity.

It sounds wonderful, but unfortunately, there's a catch: These claims are often exaggerated, misleading or downright false. Monsanto's products—and the practices they promote—may sustain the company's profits, but the evidence shows that they stand in the way of truly sustainable solutions to our food and farming challenges.

In the ads below, we counter Monsanto's feel-good rhetoric with some facts gleaned from UCS analysis. Share them with friends, and spread the word: when it comes to healthy farming, Monsanto fails!"

#1: More Herbicide + Fewer Butterflies = Better Seeds?

Monsanto Says: "In the hands of farmers, better seeds can help meet the needs of our rapidly growing population, while protecting the earth's natural resources."

In Fact: Monsanto's Roundup Ready crops, genetically engineered to tolerate the company's Roundup herbicide, increased herbicide use by an estimated 383 million pounds between 1996 and 2008. And Monarch butterflies have laid 81 percent fewer eggs thanks to habitat loss since Roundup Ready was introduced.

#2: A Bumper Crop of Superweeds

Monsanto Says: "Our rapidly growing population is putting limited resources--such as land, water, and energy--under increased pressure."

In Fact: The challenge is real, but Monsanto's products aren't the answer. UCS analysis shows that GE crops have so far done little to improve yields in the U.S. Meanwhile—speaking of rapidly growing populations—overuse of Roundup Ready crops has spawned an epidemic of "superweeds," causing huge problems for U.S. farmers.

#3: All Wet on Drought Tolerance

Monsanto Says: "With the right tools, farmers can conserve more for future generations."

In Fact: If farmers want to conserve more water, Monsanto's DroughtGard corn isn't the right tool. A recent UCS study found that DroughtGard won't help farmers reduce water use—and its engineered drought tolerance will likely only be useful in moderate drought conditions. (Research has shown that organic farming methods could improve drought-year yields by up to 96%.)

I asked the question are peanuts GMO..because we all like peanuts/peanut butter...and because I was looking for a safe cooking oil the other day and find it's getting harder and harder to find one to use...they are either Soy based, which is about 90% gmo, or canola...from rapeseed...or corn which is 96% gmo..and it seems as though you better be very sure your olive oil, contains enough olive oil, to rate being called olive oil, which a lot of them aren't, they have other oils added...so what is left?  Coconut, Grapeseed, and Peanut..about the only ones left...

Came up with this web page...

http://www.ehow.com/facts_7420509_peanuts-gmo_.html    which says this..

Timeframe

Peanuts are not approved for sale by the FDA to be GMO as of October 2010. GMO peanuts have been studied in attempt to be approved for sale as a genetically modified product since 1993.

Goals

There are multiple goals in the research done on GMO peanuts affecting consumers, farmers and suppliers. Farmers aim for a product that is fungal-, viral- and insect-resistant as well as environmentally tolerant. Suppliers strive for enriched health-promoting traits and modifications made to the allergen-causing proteins reducing or eliminating allergic reactions in humans."

Benefits

Research suggests that GMO peanuts would be healthier, safer, cheaper and more readily-available than the current non-GMO peanuts.

Warning

The FDA has made statements in general about GMO products that "the processes of genetic engineering and traditional breeding are different and... they lead to different risks." Because GMO products are a modification to the genes of the product, it is possible that more allergic reactions will be created to these new strains of genes in GMO products.

and this video

Should We Be OK With GMO Peanuts If It Helps Save People From a Life-Threatening Allergic Reaction?

"Published on Apr 1, 2012 by foodoffensive

foodoffensive.com's weekly video broadcast for 3/26/12. In this episode, I cover the eight installment in a series of special reports on GMOs. This week's report: "Genetically Modified Peanuts"

ok..so out of 300 million people there is approximately 100 deaths per year. Now sure, I realize that to every one of those people and their loved ones, that is very very important..and devastating...but does that justify gmoing peanuts with all the detrimental affects it could have and the wide ranging problems it can cause to bees, birds, animals...etc..and what is to guarantee  you could still eat peanuts IF..the gmo peanuts are identical looking to the non gmo kind...especially IF you had an allergy to them, that could kill you...IF you got the wrong one...??? sorry...don't think any one of those 100 people a year would take such a chance, which means gmoing peanuts for the allergy reason does NOT hold water...onward, and upward...into the video at about 14 minutes...

Heck 600 people in America die each year falling off beds...6 x the number that die from peanut allergy...yet I don't see them passing laws saying we have to have safety rails on the sides of all beds, do I??...so the video is saying we need to avoid developing gmo peanuts...there is just simply NO justification for it...

Now I am going to post a list of food producers that use gmo items in their products...enjoy...and don't be shocked...I, personally need to throw out half the food in my house according to this list...

I will continue to shout this...while trying my darndest to keep ahead of all the gmo in our everyday lives.

great post Breezy. We rarely use any oils now at all and in fact went through our pantry a month or so ago and threw out cooking oils etc etc.  We only use olive oil cold as it becomes toxic if heated. We have been using a lot of Aldis products, this avoids Kelloggs and a few others. We do not buy any Asian /Chinese foods at all.

Use a Stonedine frypan and you do not need any oils at all. Well worth the money. We do have some coconut oil but haven't used it for months as no need to. Neither of us will eat peanuts any more. Funny thing, Australia and New Zealand are the only countries that sell Tim Tams. (bikkys) The rest of the world has banned them due to the ingredients. Also we are the only country in the world that imports jeans impermeated with formaldahyde. The chinese make them specially for us!!!  (Stops wrinkling supposedly) Even China does not allow sales in their own country. Work that one out. This country needs a wakeup call but I suspect that there are those being paid big money to either shut up or create false documentation.

Monsanto May Lose Billions in Brazil Over “Monsanto Tax”

July 7, 2012

By Dr. Mercola

Story at-a-glance

In Brazil, Monsanto has charged farmers a 2 percent royalty fee on all of their Roundup Ready sales since 2005 (after already purchasing the seeds from Monsanto), and if non-GM crops are contaminated with GM soy, the farmer is penalized close to 3 percent of his sales.

A judge ruled that the tax was illegal, especially since the patents on Roundup Ready seeds in Brazil already expired. Monsanto was ordered to stop collecting all royalties … and to return all the royalties collected since 2004 – an amount that could add up to a minimum of $2 billion!

Monsanto is the subject of numerous lawsuits by governments and groups of citizens for charges ranging from contamination to biopiracy.

Monsanto’s foray into genetic engineering is perhaps their most significant disaster of all, threatening the very future of the food supply."

This is vile.

from Gates And Monsanto Go After Raw Milk ( raw, like breast milk, raw)

http://govtslaves.info/gates-and-monsanto-go-after-raw-milk/

Bill Gates just gave an $8.3 million grant to develop GMO Designer Humans. By simply altering, deleting, or adding certain gut bacteria (genes) and fungi, corporations can create “Designer Human Consumers” in the near future, and Bill Gates wants to do just that, starting by “spiking” the milk that a toddler drinks. Gates and corporations he licenses, could potentially make a human short, tall, smart, dumb, submissive, aggressive, autistic, savant, healthy, or constantly in need of pharmaceutal [sic] drugs, or depend on WINDOWS computer based assistance for the rest of their life.

Worst of all, Gates could potentially control how long you live. In the near future, human development can potentially be dictated by corporate America, through the Bill & Malinda [sic] Gates Foundation and their $8.3 U.C. Davis grant
