Q&A: Why Are We Still Shouting About GMOs?

February 17, 2014

"CHICAGO, ILLINOIS—Why is it so hard for scientists and the public to agree about the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture? Proponents argue that tweaking a crop’s DNA can increase nutritional value, pest resistance, or yield to help feed the world’s growing population. But many remain vehemently opposed to the technology. Some fear that big businesses like Monsanto will monopolize the agricultural industry by claiming intellectual property rights over GM crops. Others aren’t convinced that GMOs are safe to eat.

Philosopher of science Daniel Hicks of Western University in London, Canada, has studied how sociopolitical and ethical concerns—for example, fears about abuse of intellectual property rights—get mixed up with the technical questions about food safety in the GMO debate. His current research seeks to document how people on either side of the controversy collect and use evidence about the claim that GMOs increase crop yields. He presented a poster titled “Why is the GMO debate so intractable?” here at the annual meeting of AAAS, which publishes Science. Hicks sat down with Science to answer a few questions about the GMO debate.

Q: How are some philosophers of science explaining the GMO debate?

D.H.: A philosopher named Heather Douglas has a model that emphasizes what she calls inductive risk. Consider a claim like “GMOs are safe for humans to eat.” If you’re a proponent of GMOs, you might think it’s really important to develop and implement them to feed the world, so you might set a relatively undemanding threshold for statistical significance [in food safety studies.] But if you’re opposed to GMOs—if you’re really worried about the downstream consequences—you might set a more demanding threshold. And then if we have a body of evidence that’s somewhere in between these, that will be sufficient for the proponents, but opponents won’t be able to accept that claim. There won’t be enough evidence. But a limitation of the inductive risk model is that it doesn’t directly address sociopolitical and economic concerns.

Q: How have you tried to address those?

D.H.: My approach is to look carefully at sociopolitical and economic concerns and the ways in which they’re lost. One way is that they’re often misrepresented as health and safety concerns. Another way is that they’re dismissed. For example, proponents of GMOs will say that intellectual property isn’t really relevant to evaluating the technology, and so we should set these concerns aside and focus on the technology itself. And a third way is that these concerns will be acknowledged (proponents will say they’re concerned about intellectual property, for example), but then they just won’t respond to these things. They’ll go on to say, “But we have evidence that shows they’re safe, and we need GMOs to feed the world.” This isn’t really engaging the concerns that motivate a lot of opponents."

Monsanto's Roundup may be linked to fatal kidney disease, new study suggests

Published time: February 27, 2014 01:20

A heretofore inexplicable fatal, chronic kidney disease that has affected poor farming regions around the globe may be linked to the use of biochemical giant Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide in areas with hard water, a new study has found.

The new study was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Researchers suggest that Roundup, or glyphosate, becomes highly toxic to the kidney once mixed with“hard” water or metals like arsenic and cadmium that often exist naturally in the soil or are added via fertilizer. Hard water contains metals like calcium, magnesium, strontium, and iron, among others. On its own, glyphosate is toxic, but not detrimental enough to eradicate kidney tissue.

The glyphosate molecule was patented as a herbicide by Monsanto in the early 1970s. The company soon brought glyphosate to market under the name “Roundup,” which is now the most commonly used herbicide in the world.

The hypothesis helps explain a global rash of the mysterious, fatal Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown etiology (CKDu) that has been found in rice paddy regions of northern Sri Lanka, for example, or in El Salvador, where CKDu is the second leading cause of death among males.

Furthermore, the study’s findings explain many observations associated with the disease, including the linkage between the consumption of hard water and CKDu, as 96 percent of patients have been found to have consumed “hard or very hard water for at least five years, from wells that receive their supply from shallow regolith aquifers.”

The CKDu was discovered in rice paddy farms in northern Sri Lanka around 20 years ago. The condition has spread quickly since then and now affects 15 percent of working age people in the region, or a total of 400,000 patients, the study says. At least 20,000 have died from CKDu there.

New Government Study Reveals No Advantage To GMO Crops

Tara Dodrill

March 1, 2014

"Genetically modified crops do not provide a higher yield than conventionally grown seeds and actually lead to an increase in herbicide use, according to a groundbreaking new federal report that refutes conventional wisdom.

The USDA’s report does weigh in on the argument about whether genetically modified crops are good or bad, but the GMO review is not a glowing statement of approval, either. In fact, overall it’s negative.

Genetically modified crops first appeared in the United States more than 15 years ago. While some American farmers claim they benefit from growing GMO seeds, the negative impact on honeybees, and quite possibly human health and the environment as well, still abound.

The USDA report said researchers did not find a “definitive” yield increase during the first 15 years of commercial GMO crops production.

“In fact, the yields of herbicide-tolerant or insect-resistant seeds may be occasionally lower than the yields of conventional varieties.”

Several of the researchers discovered “no significant differences” between the net yield returns between farmers using conventional seeds and those using the GMO variety, Reuters reported."

The overuse of herbicides also has led to an increase in weed resistance, the study said. As previously reported by Off The Grid News, the development of “superweeds” now also poses a problem for farmers and homeowners alike. Weeds have become resistant to the current variety of chemical herbicides, growing to record heights despite frequent spraying. Biotech giants like Monsanto are now rushing to develop even stronger chemical mixes to combat superweeds."

Whistleblower: Top Gov’t Scientist Reverses And Denounces GMO Crops

Daniel Jennings

March 8, 2014

"Scientific evidence has convinced the man who used to be Canada’s top apologist for GMO products to change his mind.

Dr. Thierry Vrain, a genetic scientist and soil biologist, now thinks that genetically modified organisms are dangerous and unproductive.

Just 10 years ago, Vrain was assuring the public of the safety of GMO crops as a spokesman for Agriculture Canada (Canada’s department of agriculture). Now retired, running an organic farm and working as an independent scientist, Vrain has changed his mind about genetically engineered crops. He now believes genetic engineering is based on bad science.

“Not being on the payroll anymore, I had the freedom to read different sources and look at genetic engineering from new perspectives,” Vrain said of his new perspective in an interview with GMWatch.org. “That is how I first became aware of the possibility that GMOs were not all rosy and perfect.”

Money The Driving Force

Biotech companies and government agencies are ignoring the science that refutes GMO arguments, Vrain argued.

“It is about the money,” he said. “Again, it becomes very important for the biotech companies to push aside the studies that are not confirming the corporate line or questioning safety. But it’s simpler. Most investors in the biotech companies just want to make money… it’s the bottom line. They may think if they can get away with selling it then why not?”

Facebook and Monsanto: top shareholders are identical

fbmonsanto.jpg

Seven of the top 12 shareholders of Facebook and Monsanto are identical.

Even more to the point, three of the top five shareholders are the same.

The top shareholder, at the moment, in Monsanto is The Vanguard Group, which is number two on the list of top Facebook shareholders.

FMR, LLC, is the number one Facebook shareholder. For Monsanto, it’s number two.

The State Street Corporation is the number three shareholder for both Facebook and Monsanto.

BlackRock Institutional Trust Company is Monsanto’s number five shareholder, and ranks at number four for Facebook.

The other top dozen shareholders of both Monsanto and Facebook are Jennison Associates, Sands Capital Management, and the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund.

Yes, these are all investment funds, and they spread their enormous money around. They own shares of many, many publicly traded companies

But the comparison of Monsanto and Facebook illustrates how, at the top of the food chain, there is connected wealth. These investment funds can, if they choose to, intercede in companies’ proxy votes to alter company policy.

And of course, in case a company decides to take a controversial stance on a political issue, or introduce a new product that would disrupt the foundations of the economic status quo, the investment funds can exert punishment:

Suddenly selling off millions of shares and avoiding the company like poison would have a severely negative effect.

As long as these companies proceed with business as usual, there’s really nothing to notice. The system hums in its normal way. And that’s the whole point. Don’t rock the boat.

Facebook operating as a consumer self-spying machine, laying out people’s personal details? Monsanto taking over the food supply with its dangerous and toxic GMO-pesticide technology?

No problem.

That’s business as usual. And the same top investment funds will continue to hold millions of shares in both companies.Because both companies are part of the same overall system.

That’s “normal.”

You have a company that intends to launch a new cheap energy technology that would revolutionize the planet? Or a natural plant-based treatment for cancer that actually works, with no devastating adverse effects? And you’re going to go public and look for vital and necessary support from investment funds?

That’s a whole other issue. That’s definitely not normal. Watch out.

You’ve got torpedoes heading your way.

They are reverse terraforming the planet right under our collective, stupid noses...what planet are they making our earth like?

http://www.tbyil.com/Monsanto_GM_Trees_Grasses.htm

Not satisfied to own or control our food crops, Monsanto and its spinoff ArborGen have also set their sights on genetically modified trees and grasses. Despite a groundswell of objections by scientists and activists, the USDA has turned a deaf ear to their concerns and has instead aided and abetted Monsanto's plans.

Coming soon to a forest or landscape near you: Franken trees and Franken grasses

In recent years, Monsanto and ArborGen have been developing GM trees including trees modified to withstand Monsanto's Roundup, trees designed with a reduced lignin content to appeal to paper making and construction industries (lignin gives trees their strength and rigidity) and "terminator trees" which don't produce seeds. In Hawaii, there has already been a contamination issue with GM papaya - the world's first commercially planted genetically engineered tree.

Researchers: Monsanto’s GM soy comes with a dose of herbicides

April 23, 2014

Lindsey Abrams

Samples of the genetically modified crop had "extreme" levels of chemical residues

shutterstock_174976196-620x412.jpg

"By now, you should be familiar with biotech giant Monsanto’s foolproof business model: the company manufactures Roundup, an agricultural herbicide, as well as Roundup Ready seeds that have been genetically engineered to resist the poison. When farmers apply Roundup to their fields, the weeds are killed, the edible plants stay healthy. Simple.

Except just because the crops are Roundup-resistant, doesn’t mean they’re somehow repelling the herbicide. Aside from documented problems like seed contamination and weeds developing their own Roundup resistance, the chemical can also remain on our food — and, as studies have suggested, end up causing a whole range of health problems.

When it comes to Monsanto’s GM soy, a new study, published in the journal Food Chemistry, finds that’s almost certainly the case. At Mother Jones, Tom Philpott has the rundown on the research, which found that samples of soybeans grown in Iowa from GM herbicide-tolerant seeds all contained residues of glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — as well as AMPA, the compound glyphosate breaks down into as it decays. Non-GM soybeans — regardless of whether they were farmed conventionally or organically — contained neither.

Not a big soy consumer? That doesn’t mean you’re avoiding glyphosate — most soybeans grown in the U.S. end up as feed for the animals that eventually become meat, or else are used in cooking oil. A minimal amount of soy is grown organically, and even conventionally grown, non-GM soy is hard to come by. According to the USDA, over 90 percent of U.S. soybeans are genetically modified to be resistant to herbicides."

How Monsanto Annihilated A Paradise & Turned It Into An Island Of Illness

April 25, 2014

Joe Martino

"A beautiful island in Hawaii called Molokai has been subject to biotech giant Monsanto for some time now and the results of Monsanto’s actions on the island is beginning to show very dark conclusions. The residents of the island of Molokai seem to be getting sicker and sicker as Monsanto continually carries out their actions near villages on the island. Some are suggesting the island has become a laboratory and the islanders are the lab rats being tested. Although not enough study has been done to find out why the rates of illness, cancer, asthma and diabetes are suddenly rising greatly on the island, many believe the evidence is anecdotal and seen when you observe the people.

Monsanto leased 1850 acres of land on the island of Molokai to grow their Bt corn crops. The very fact they are merely leasing the land already raises the question as to whether or not they know the land will become of low quality once they are finished with it. The Bt toxin Monsanto uses is engineered into corn to allow farmers easy control over pests without spraying as much pesticides. Only there seems to be growing evidence that this Bt toxin is a threat to human health.

Molokai_1.jpg

Although The State Health Department has stated they feel the farming practices are safe, nearby residents are not happy about what’s going on and strongly feel Monsanto’s practices are causing harm and illness to those especially close to where Monsanto is spraying. Many in the area are beginning to do the research and are connecting the dots that the recent rise in illnesses is directly related to what Monsanto’s Bt toxin and Glyphosate has been known to cause."

This is just plain evil. I cannot believe the World sits by and allows a corporation to do this. At least Russia has the balls to stand up to them. It's one thing if people love your product and want to use or buy it; but using military to take over a nation for a corporation's profits?   Russia, GMO and the Geopolitics of Organic

Russia’s RT reported in an article titled, “Russia will not import GMO products – PM Medvedev,” that, “Russia will not import GMO products, the country’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said, adding that the nation has enough space and resources to produce organic food.” The article would quote Russia’s prime minister who stated specifically, “if the Americans like to eat GMO products, let them eat it then. We don’t need to do that; we have enough space and opportunities to produce organic food.”

and from the article:

Corporate interests and technology, coupled with Western aid organizations, backed by NATO’s military force, helped transform Afghanistan’s agricultural landscape through the systematic poisoning of traditional crops and their replacement with genetically modified soybeans (a crop previously alien to Afghan agriculture and cuisine).

The roots Monsanto sank into Afghanistan will be deep and lasting. Farmers dependent on patented genetically modified soybeans will be dependent on Monsanto and other Western biotech/big-ag giants indefinitely, and in turn, so will the people who depend on those farmers for daily sustenance. The very sovereignty of Afghanistan as an independent nation has been undermined at the most basic and fundamental level, its food security which now resides in the hands of foreigners.

Dump Monsanto Stock Day: Friday, May 9th

Catherine J. Frompovich
May 6, 2014

"Food Democracy Now (FDN) and GMO Inside.org are promoting a day of financial ‘returns’ for Monsanto, the premier genetically-modified-organism (GMO) chemical company. The ‘return’ both these organizations are promoting is the return of Monsanto stocks back to Monsanto, (divesting/selling/cashing in holdings) by conscientious consumers of their stock portfolio holdings of Monsanto stock held either directly or via mutual funds.

Fidelity alone owns more than $3.2 billion in Monsanto stock. In total, Fidelity manages more than $4.6 trillion in assets and more than 20 million customers in the U.S.

Here’s a website that has a table of mutual funds and companies that have stocks/investments in Monsanto" http://www.ethicalinvesting.com/monsanto/avoid.shtml .

Here’s a webpage listing companies that support Monsanto.
http://www.ethicalinvesting.com/monsanto/avoid2.shtml .

According to a newsletter this writer received from GMO Inside,

This coming Friday, May 9th, FDN is leading flash mob protests in select cities across the U.S. at Fidelity Investment offices to let them know that we’re serious about dumping Monsanto’s toxic assets.

The Global Prolife Alliance (GPA) Council has identified American billionaire, Bill Gates as a major foreign sponsor of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s North East region.

Speaking with journalists in Owerri, the chairman of the GPA, Dr. Philip Njemanze disclosed that Gates and Monsanto were sponsoring the insurgency in the region using their biotechnology companies.

According to him, the major aim of the insurgency was to capture the food security of Nigeria and control Africa’s largest nation by population and economy, adding that this could only be possible by fighting to displace the indigenous farmers in the country and replace them with Genetically Modified Organisms, GMOs corporate farms in the North East food basket region of Nigeria.

Njemanze, revealed that the name Boko Haram was only used as a cover-up in the terrorism attacks, saying that the actual perpetrators were hired assassins and mercenaries by the Blackwater (also called Xe-Service, and now Academi) private army owned by Gates and Mosanto.

Vermont law requires labeling of GMO foods

May 8, 2014

Dave Gram

"MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- As hundreds cheered, Gov. Peter Shumlin signed a law Thursday that puts Vermont on the path to be the first state to require labeling of genetically modified foods and promptly announced an online fundraiser to battle expected legal challenges from the food industry.

The Vermont law takes effect in mid-2016, but opponents said shortly after the bill signing that they would file a lawsuit. The Grocery Manufacturers' Association said government has no compelling interest in warning consumers about GMO foods. Another obstacle to the state law looms in Congress as Republicans work on a bill that would forbid states from passing and enforcing laws requiring GMO labeling."

French Fried Pesticide and the Upcoming GMO Potato

Health enthusiasts all talk about the dangers of consuming genetically modified corn, soy, canola, cottonseed oil and sugar beets (MSG), but what about GM potatoes? Surely fast food French fries aren't just cooked in genetically mutated, hydrogenated oils but come from potatoes that are bred to resist blight fungus and other field "pests" right? Corporate America never leaves a stone unturned when it comes to saving money and investing in chronic sick care at the same time, so why would fast food fries be any different? Has the Franken-fry already invaded the likes of most fast food and we just don't know about it?

McDonald's is looking at making the switch, so what about the rest of the "kings" of junk science and the fried food addiction dispensers? Shall you supersize those pest-killing fries? What kind of fries are for sale so cheap, hot, fast and convenient off every major highway exit in America -- are they GMO? Did you know that GMO can make you create pesticide inside your gut? Your good bacteria that fight off infection might be getting annihilated and you don't even know. It's time to research this blight on humanity.

Monsanto plans to patent genetically modified marijuana brand in Uruguay

rsa 76

"U.S. corporation Monsanto plans to launch production of genetically modified marijuana, and companies such as Drug Policy Alliance y Open Society Foundation are going to create our own brand, which will be produced under cannabis, information portal La Red 21.

Organization of Open Society Foundation is under the control of the shareholder Monsanto, billionaire George Soros. Company Drug Policy Alliance y Open Society Foundation, funded by Monsanto will be responsible for market development of transgenic seeds of marijuana, particularly in Uruguay.

Uruguay - the first country in the world to officially legalize the production and sale of marijuana. Initiator of the law was the leadership of the State, headed by President Jose Mujica. According to authorities, a guarantee of success in Uruguay marijuana legalization should be state regulation of prices for hemp.

There are many reasons why Monsanto and other companies producing GMOs would like to learn a new product. Marijuana may be the next major GMO crop. First of all, the company plans to produce GMO manipulate so-called "medical marijuana". If pharmacists join with GMO companies, pharmaceutical mafia can create transgenic strains with the ability to produce more active compounds which are patented and can be implemented as a medicine.

It is also worth noting that former strategic director Jamin Shively Microsoft also announced that it plans to patent in the U.S. is the first national brand under which will be produced hemp imported from Mexico. The new company is based in Seattle.

Businessman said that the initial funding for the project is $ 10 million to start the company's products will be distributed only in two U.S. states, but at the request of Shively: "We will seek to ensure that in our hands was 40% of cannabis in the world."

Bill Gates Dodges Questions on Why He Owns 500,000 Shares of Monsanto

From earlier on this year, but still interesting

"Bill Gates is primarily known as the multi-billionaire who created Microsoft, the company behind the most popular computer operating system known as Windows.

With this massive wealth, he has retired from leading Microsoft and now instead focuses his money and time on furthering genetically modified technology, geoengineering, experimental vaccinations, and preaching about how Monsanto is the answer to world hunger.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Gates owns 500,000 shares worth 23 million US dollars (or more) of Monsanto stock.

The very same company that has been caught running slave rings in Argentina in which workers were forced to work 14+ hours a day while withholding payment, has used their massive finances to fund organizations that literally fake FDA quotes to support GMOs, and of course peddling through GMOs that have been linked to numerous health concerns.

This is not even taking into account the farmer suicides that occur around every 30 minutes due to Monsanto’s failing GMO crop yield bankrupting small-time farmers in India’s notorious ‘suicide belt.

I don't know if anyone ever posted this in this long thread- repulsive history of Monsanto....

http://banoosh.com/blog/2013/04/08/dark-history-of-monsanto/

Dark History of Monsanto

Monsanto is one of the largest pharmaceutical and agricultural companies that producers genetically modified foodsand seeds, drugs, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides. This multibillion dollar company has other branches in 100 different countries and is the main producer of genetically modified crops and seeds in the world.

Monsanto has been around since 1901 and makes billions of dollars profit a year. In the last 110 years of its dark existence Monsanto has been destroying the environment by releasing all kinds of pollutions, toxic chemicals and feeding the world hunger with its genetically modified foods and seeds. For many Monsanto is among many other multinational companies who represents greed, ignorance and injustice. In 1977 Monsanto sold its chemical business and got heavily engaged in producing genetically modified corn, soybeans and biotechnology.

Russian anti-GMO activists raise funds for ‘first-ever’ independent intl research

May 17, 2014

"As Russian MPs ponder over a draft bill that could see GMOs outlawed, the country’s chief genetic safety activist tells RT she is skeptical about the legislative initiative and urges ‘long-overdue’ independent international research.

GMO production and distribution is likened to terrorism by the authors of a draft bill submitted to the Russian parliament earlier this week. It’s not the first comparison of the kind, according to Elena Sharoykina, director of the Genetic Safety Public Association (GSPA), a 10-year-old NGO in Moscow, Russia’s major campaigner for GM-free food and agriculture.

In an interview to RT, Sharoykina recalled a statement made by the NATO Committee on the Challenges to Modern Society in the Belgian city of Liege in 2004, in which it warned that GMOs may be used as a genetic weapon.

If serious international experts on security who have close ties with the scientific community say this is possible then there’s no smoke without fire,” Sharoykina said.

The GSPA director is still skeptical about the draft bill, as she sees no way in which the legislation could be enforced in practice, as it would be hard to prove a direct link between certain GMOs and health or environmental problems.

The activist however cites some disturbing experiment results, like the one GSPA conducted with the help of the A.N. Severtsev Institute of Ecology and Evolution in 2010.

We conducted an experiment on hamsters taken from the natural environment,” Sharoykina said. “We had a group that was given standard feed-stuff plus pure soy and another group which had their standard feed-stuff combined with GM soy. The animals which were eating GMO did not have their third generation born.”
