'It sounded like a bomb:' 8 possible sinkholes open near Ocala homes

An area of an Ocala community has been taped off after at least eight possible sinkholes opened Wednesday and Thursday, officials said.

The holes opened up on a hillside leading to a retention pond, forcing rescue crews to evacuate people from a row of town homes.

Ocala Fire Rescue said eight town homes were evacuated Wednesday night in the Wynchase Townhomes complex on Southwest 42nd Place after the holes began forming earlier in the day.

New Zealand's 'biggest' sinkhole unearthed by dairy farmer

A massive sinkhole has opened up on a New Zealand farm, with a volcanologist saying it is the biggest he has ever seen in the country.

The crack was discovered at Earthquake Flat, 15 kilometres south-east of Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island

Vulcanologist Brad Scott visited the farm where it was discovered and said it would have taken decades for the underground cavity to grow, but was spurred on by recent heavy rain.

"The largest I've seen prior to this would be about a third of the size of this, so this is really big," he said.

An actual sinkhole has opened on the White House lawn. It’s growing

Heather Timmons    May 22, 2018

"Construction on the US White House began in 1792. It has been almost continuously occupied by US presidents since 1800, barring a few years after the British set it on fire in 1814.

But that doesn’t mean that the present-day building is free of hazards—there are mice, cockroaches, and ants. And as of this past weekend, a sinkhole has been growing on the north lawn, Voice of America reporter Steve Herman observed, just near the press briefing room. <<near the press briefing room?

snip tweet/image

“It was noticeably bigger between Sunday and Monday,” Herman said. “It’s more than a foot long right now,” he said. A second sinkhole has opened up right next to it, he said."

IIRC the Wash. Monument  has been shored up a couple times as it keeps sinking.  A real swamp DC is.  I recall the webbots, a few years back, predicting a big white house would fall into a sink hole, but never considered it could actually turn out to be this one.

This is one of those - you must be kidding me moments - one year ago to the day

A Sinkhole Just Opened in Front of President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Estate

May 22, 2017     Time Staff

"A sinkhole opened in front of Mar-a-Lago, President Trump’s private estate and golf club, on Monday causing minor traffic delays.

The sinkhole is 4-by-4 feet and is believed to be near a newly installed water main, according to a Palm Beach travel alert. Sinkholes are a common occurrence in Florida, according to the Weather Channel, which has called them “as much a part of the Florida landscape as palm trees and alligators.”

The town of Palm Beach issued a travel alert on Monday as a result of the sinkhole, saying crews from West Palm Beach Utilities will be examining the sinkhole throughout the day. According to CBS12 in Florida, one lane of traffic has been closed.

The Mar-a-Lago estate is referred to as the “Winter White House” by President Trump who visited the club frequently in the first few months of his time in office. The President has hosted foreign leaders at the club, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping."
